Written by Stephen Stills, who is the lead vocal and guitarist, about his on again off again affair with the great singer Judy Collins. The title is a clever pun on Sweet Judy Blues, as Collins has intensely blue eyes and the Suite part refers to the song being split into distinctive sections to form a cohesive composition. Great lyrics, impeccable harmonies, one of the great classics. You go bros!

I didn’t know all of that til now but I obviously could tell it was about a long love relationship and the ebb and flows of it. I just know that I always felt a distinct sadness to it as well as the blueprint for a typical REAL forever-love gone adrift. Thanks for the info.

Gentleman, this entire album is epic. It's one of the most highly regarded of the era.

Collins said, in response: "Nice song, but the answer is still no!' Geez, if you can't win a woman's heart with this beautiful music, you can't win her ever, at all.

Love the sound of CS&N They were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. I had the album this song "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" came out on. It is full of great songs such as "Marrakesh Express", "Helplessly Hoping", "Wooden Ships" etc. Another great album is "Deja Vu" where Neil Young joined them. It has other hit songs such as "Teach Your Children", "Woodstock", "Carry On" & "Our House".

I have been listening to CSN for 50 years. They are totally unique. Every song is a masterpiece -- Helplessly Hoping, Wooden Ships, Carry On, etc. Keep listening to them. You'll love it.

Crosby, Stills and Nash (and sometimes Young) are a fantastic band. They don’t have any bad cuts. Pick any of their songs and you won’t be disappointed.

Hi guys, Evelyn here. This is folk rock genre. This is one of my life-long favorite albums. I played it every day in the amazing summer of 1969, and it is SUCH a time-capsule of that time. CSN were all singer/songwriters individually, and had all been in famous bands. They were part of the famous Laurel Canyon scene in the late sixties in LA….a cauldron of musical creativity…from which came the whole singer-songwriter movement of the late sixties, including Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Neil Young and many others. You know the story of when the members of Zeppelin first played together they immediately knew that they created something special between them? CSN has the same story. They happened to gather at a mutual friend’s house in Laurel Canyon (Mama Cass of The Mamas and the Papas) and began to sing together. They were immediately astounded by how well their voices blended and how they could weave such incredible harmonies. They decided then and there to form a super group. Please keep digging down into this rabbit hole…..They did gorgeous work together and as solo artists. Neil You g joined them on their second album, Deja Vu.

I'm so proud of the musicians of my generation. They represent us well.

My favorite. Carry On. and Southern Cross. Teach the Children. Crosby Stills Nash came together and Young later. They wanted to be able to come in and out according to Nash. It was an open door so they could feel free to perform individually as well.Woodstock is another great song. Judy blue eyes is Judy Collins who has the more gorgeous eyes and a wonderful singer who dated Steven Stills. Graham Nash had a relationship with Joni Mitchell a great folk singer and songwriter who wrote Woodstock. Nash wrote the song Our House aboutt this relationship. Steven Stills played many of the instruments. He is a musician of versatility. They had just begun together whencthey performed at Woodstock.

Love love love Southern Cross!

Too many of these songs as I get older forgot how great they are and how they make me feel. Saw these guys with Young in Las Vegas in ‘98. Super show!!

Wooden Ships is another chill song by them. Check it out.

CSN and sometimes Young.. deep deep rabbit hole. Southern Cross, Wooden Ships, Teach your Children, Ohio, Woodstock, Carry On, and on and on.

Before I even listen I must tell you that this is my parents' song, my stepfather to my mum. They have been together for 49 years in February and are still devoted to each other. My (step) Dad had a wonderful voice and he sang this to her, perfectly.

This is an All-Star band. Everyone of these guys including Niel Young come from very successful bands; The Byrds, The Hollies and Buffalo Springfield. They’re best known for their harmonies. There’s a documentary about Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills where all these big huge rock names hung out and created much of the music and names now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

CS&N is one of my all time favorite bands. They have so many great songs and they exemplify the 60's and 70's.

Some of the best harmonies ever! That is such a great song but then again they never recorded a bad one.

You won't find harmonies any better than CSN...and any guitar better than Steven Stills.

David Crosby has a natural gift for harmony.

I’m 66 yrs old and just sang along with this word for word…I guess some songs stick with you for decades!

Stills (Buffalo Springfield), Nash (Hollies) and Crosby (Byrds) met and discovered their vocal harmonies were great - a supergroup was born.

CSN (& sometimes Y )are the ultimate confluence of acoustic rock/blues and vocal harmony. I'm 66 and remember fondly how I learned a lot about sing harmony in my teens by singing along with CSN songs. Brilliance!

"Trips me out."; "Makes me high." - Absolutely right - a summer song of the Sixties!

Stephen Stills wrote this song about his ex-girlfriend, singer Judy Collins. With all the transitions in the song and its lengthy running time, it is a "suite" (pronounced "sweet"), a collection of things forming a unit. It's also a play on words for "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes." Other songs by CSN are "Teach Your Children (Well)," "Southern Cross" and "Wasted on the Way." ... You should also check out Judy Collins' 1968 Top 10 hit "Both Sides Now," which was written by Joni Mitchell.

The words at the end are Spanish…3 of the best TOP musicians and writers, who were all in super groups BEFORE CSNY…Genius doesn’t begin to describe this song.

A lot of Stephen Stills music was written with Judy Collins in mind. I am so lucky to have seen them with Graham Nash besides that. One of my very favorite band ever. When I was in Florida I asked my sister to send me a picture of our house renovation in North Carolina and she said with two cats in the yard when she sent it to me. That just goes to show you how important is stand was to me because she's 13 years younger than I am. That song is our house

The last verse is in Spanish. "Que linda me la traiga Cuba/La reina de la Mar Caribe/Cielo sol no tiene sangreahi/Y que triste que no puedo vaya oh va, oh va." One translation would be: How nice it will (or would) be to take you to Cuba/The queen of the Caribbean Sea/I only want to visit you there/And how sad that I can't go

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young had an excellent live album named “4 Way Street” on which they perform many elongated versions of their biggest songs. Believe me they are designed to be listened to while under the influence of pot or other enhancement drugs.

It’s funny you should talk about chillin and gettin high while listening to this song, because that’s exactly what we all did back in the 70’s while listening to this album. The band America was another we all used to listen to while lighting up!

One of the first "supergroups". All of the members had previously been in successful bands.

This song is so freakin’ great! Just everything… that bass line, Stephen on guitar and those vocals… the change ups, (hence Suite) and that ending is just so upbeat and happy. Guys, no lie: you could do every song on this classic album and not find one you didn’t like. I say Helplessly Hoping is next. It was THE chill vibe sound of the 60s Woodstock era. As usual guys, your reaction and comments were really good. You get it! I would love to hang out with you guys and just listen to this kind of music for hours. Cheers!

I bought this vinyl album as a kid when it was new. It was great growing up with music like this.

'Wooden Ships', 'Southern Cross' and 'Helplessly Hoping, so come on and check'em out. Great songs! And then you've gotta listen to another suite: An whole album-side, Cat Stevens with his 'Foreigner Suite'!

Gamarjoba, gentlemen! David, Steven & Graham never wasted their time with filler. David is a cousin, I recently discovered. Best voice. :) Every song is a unique work of art deserving of its own scrutiny. They were an acoustic Cream, which later got an additional later of whipped cream to top it off, with the addition of the great Neil Young. Their live "4-Way Street" was like a musical Faberge Egg that folks were waiting to be hatched. And when it landed, everybody scooped it up. Four sides of magic. Love your choices, and the heart y'all bring to the music. Peace.

FYI Bros: The English word "Suite"in this musical selection is pronounced "sweet". (BTW, it's the same with a hotel suite, too.) 😊

It was common in 60s & 70s to separate vocals & instruments into separate tracks on stereo sound. They also experimented with forcing the sound between the tracks, creating a wooshing sensation--as if the music was shooting thru your head--when wearing headphones (see = Jimi Hendrix, the Who, etc.)

This is their first album, came out before Woodstock, which was where they met and added Neil Young to the group (for a while)

There is a video of them doing this song at some university with them a little bit older and Steven wearing a blazer. It will amaze you! Stevens extended acoustic solo will show you where those sounds come from.

This song was such a part of that year. I 'tripped' to this more times than I can count. Lol

Interesting thing about the album cover. They were being followed around by a friend/photographer who was taking pictures of them everywhere they went. They found this place with the couch and sat down. Boom! photo. They wanted to use the picture for the album cover. Only then did they realize the guys were not sitting on the couch in the order of their names. They went back a few days later to retake the photo and the place had been torn down. After much discussion, it was like "Fuck it, use the picture anyway". Cheers from the canadian Queen nut.

A Suite is a set of instrumental compositions. Hence this is called "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" which refers to Steven Stills ex-girlfriend Judy Collins, who is a great singer herself.

…. a couple of joints and a bottle of boones farm strawberry hill wine, tossing frisbees around at the forest preserve …. ah memories. Peace.

You really can’t go wrong with any the songs suggested in the comments. Each one is a masterpiece. But I’d like to recommend one from the CSNY album “Déjà Vu” - the song “4 + 20.” It’s just Stephen Stills and an acoustic guitar. It has subtle chord changes that will blow your mind.

A very chill song that you just toke and relax to.

Looking out over the rolling hills of Appalachia and listening to CS+N on my record player. We knew it was a special time then, too.

Whether with or without Neil Young, these guys are worth a deep dive. Songs like, "Carry On", "Helplessly Hoping", "Woodstock", "Wooden Ships", "Ohio" and "Just A Song Before I Go" will keep you wanting more. Then you hear "Marrakesh Express", "Southern Cross" and "Wasted On The Way" and you know there's no turning back.

This is an album to listen to. NOT SINGLES. You're cheating yourself if you don't listen to the whole thing a few times. Stills ends up doing bass and much of the keyboards on the tracks.

You must see Nash, Crosby and Gilmour sing "Remember that Night". I think at Royal Albert Hall 1994

Next listen to the Grateful Dead... Uncle John's Band from the album Working Man's Dead....Some songs to listen to by CSNY with Neil Young singing lead are Helpless, Country Girl, Ohio.

Neil joined after this album. He was in the band Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills and they broke up. LONG story. Nash was in The Hollies and Crosby in The Byrds. (You should listen to the entire album.)(The progressions(transitions) is why it's a suite....like Yes songs.)
