Yes, I requested this only because it’s an amazing song, a few weeks before David Crosby passed away. Stephen Stills wrote this song, but Crosby was heavily involved in developing their 3 part harmonies. Bob Dylan called Crosby the Architect of Harmony. Essential Crosby songs include Guinevere and Long Time Gone from this album, Deja Vu and Almost Cut My Hair from the Deja Vu album, Laughing from If I Could Only Remember My Name, and of course Eight Miles High with the Byrds. Crosby produced Joni Mitchell’s first album, and they were briefly involved until Crosby introduced her to Graham Nash, and she and Nash were together for the next couple of years. After Deja Vu, Crosby did several wonderful albums with Graham Nash, and had a big comeback in the last decade as a solo artist. His last album came out just last year and received rave reviews - For Free - and covers that fantastic song by Joni Mitchell. It also contains The River Runs, a collaboration with Michael McDonald, and Rodriguez for a Day - co-written with Donald Fagan!! A giant of the music scene over five decades. We will miss him enormously. Thanks for this moving tribute, Nick and Alexia.

I used to put a big speaker (70s big!) on each side of my head and blast this song over and over and over, it's just a masterpiece. I love the way the three voices stack one at a time - Stills "we are one...", then Nash comes in on two alone then Crosby joins on three together, and all of them sing for each other. I also love the alliteration, Stills is such a creative force in his writing and his playing. Thank you so much for reviewing this one of his too. Rest in peace David Crosby ❤️

'Lay me down' from more recent times strikes me as a modern masterpiece showcasing Crosby's glorious vocals and of course Graham Nash who improves every song he ever graces.John Raymond i believe wrote the piece and what a joy it is to play on campfire guitar duties.Love Crosby but when Stills finally departs it will hit me a lot harder.

That last part is Stephen Stills singing in Spanish, which he mastered as a youth living in Costa Rica. Stephen played almost all the instruments on this song, and the entire album for that matter. He was obsessed with making it as perfect as possible. 67 was the summer of love. Stephen Stills sang the lead on "Suite Judy Blue Eyes". Nick and Lex, you need to react to "Long Time Gone" from this album. David Crosby sings lead on that one. Also, the killer song called "Almost Cut My Hair" from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album Deja Vu. David Crosby sings the lead on that one also.

The song was written about Judy Collins. And David Crosby who was in a relationship with Joni Mitchell, helped her navigate the male dominated recording music industry to get the first album off the ground in late 67, early 68. When Joni had a near death experience with her brain aneurysm , he was there by her side from coma, to be awake and unable to speeak, to her finally getting to the point of being able to play again. A powerful album he put together in 1971 called If Only I Could Remember My Name included Joni Mitchell, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, and his old band mates Nash & Young. You should try the whole album.

Joni and Graham Nash were quite the item. Check out "Our House" for a glimpse into their life together. Beautiful, simple song they wrote together after an afternoon of antique shopping together. I clearly remember when this album came out and thinking "I've never heard anything quite like this!" Still haven't. Those vocal harmonies are just pure gold! Graham Nash is always the high vocal parts, to answer your question. This was such a great time to be growing up.....something new all the time, and so damn good! If you think about all the bands that were really hitting their stride from 67-72ish, it's mind blowing! This is essential music and you must hear it all!

With the advent of social media, I'm consistantly amazed by the number of people who are so "easily offended" or are so hyper critical. It really comes from a sense of selfishness and self-entitlement. What ever happened to openness and personal dignity? Think more of others, people. Don't let these complainers bother you guys. Great work as always. Great song, as well. Whole album is killer. Worth a listen.

Yeah I'm looking at the last comments (why is it always those that come in later? Other than me :P) and what is with these "angry" people? Is it because they have no friends, or they don't know how to communicate with people _face to face?_ Don't they know by now, that N&L are just now discovering TONS of famous musicians, songs and bands - and WE are helping in that??? But in the anonymity of a computer screen they get to lash-out at nothing, and what . . . feel "satisfied" in their own anger and ignorance, and not once judge the reflection in the mirror 🧐. Its like people are becoming socio-paths and FEED off other peoples pain.

I'm glad you reacted to CSN. Also, great to see Lex as part of a video again. I remember traveling with my parents in Seattle in 1970 and CSNY came on the radio. I immediately said, " wow, who's that"? When We got back to Texas my mom bought me the CSNY album, Deja Vu, and then I went back to CSN and been a fan all these years. I was fortunate to see CSN many times, CSNY, and a couple of David Crosby tours. The most recent one was in Austin in 2018, and it was a pristine performance by him and his band!! If you all liked this song, there are so many great songs off this album!! Also, i know you all are big Steely Dan fans. David Crosby also loved Steely Dan and incorporated many unique chord structures in his own music as well. In Croz's 2021 album, For Free, he recorded a Steely Dan style song called "Rodriguez For A Night", and the lyrics are actually by Donald Fagen!! There is also a fantastic duet with Michael McDonald called "River Rise"!!! Great songs, you all should give a listen!! Will miss Croz very much!!

Crosby, Stills and Nash opened my mind up to a new kind of music when they released this song and album. Accoustic rock with sublime vocals and harmonies. There is so much to enjoy from their first album, and then Neil Young joined and they recorded 'Deja Vu' which is more eclectic in style, but still brilliant. Their double live album 'Four Way Street' has one LP of acoustic songs, and one LP of electric and it's great. They were also making solo albums around 70-71 and David Cosby's 'If I Could Only Remember My Name' is beautiful, Stephen Stills' eponymous debut album is magnificent (featuring Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton) and Neil Young's 'After The Goldrush' is captivating. I was so fortunate to see CSN in Johannesburg in 1996 and they were on top of their game. It is so sad that we're losing these legends so regularly now, but they are getting older. At least we have their recordings, and our memories. Thanks guys for a lovely reaction.

I was 18 yrs old in 1969. The summer of love was 1967. ‘69 was the summer of the Woodstock Festival. Although there was no shortage of love. And the crowd at Woodstock was 500,000. No violence, no arrests. A few bad trips, and some rain, and lots of mud. Amazingly beautiful music.

@@rk41gator I was working in a band in a hotel a few miles away. Many of the hotel staff left for Woodstock for the weekend taking mattresses and food from the hotel. The stories they returned with were a a mixture of horror and ecstasy because of the rain and the massive 500,000 young folks in one farm converted into a historic music festival. Good thing they were all stoned silly. Everyone survived it, peacefully. With lifelong memories.

@@ed.z. Magical. Are you terribly sorry you did not go? Your story is similar to mine and Janis Joplin. Not a big fan at the time and with a college project deadline fast approaching I chose not to go and save the money (some decisions are truly bonehead shortsightedness). Sitting alone in our studio, since everyone else went, I could look out the window and see literally across the street a full stadium at the Un. of Florida. 80,000 or so attending with me thinking "You idiot!" LOL

@@rk41gator no regrets. The others who went came back caked in mud, dazed and confused, from sleeping under the rain in a muddy field with virtually no access to water or bathrooms. I got to see many of those bands in the following years when our band had time off, and when college workload would allow. Today, decades later you and I can re-see the great bands from our era. And it’s a kick to see younger people reacting to this music for the first time. As we remember the days when we were invincible, young, and living in a a country that was much different than today.

A lot of people are surprised that Stephen Stills not only wrote this masterpiece, he played all of the instruments save drums...on the entire album. Crosby gave him the nickname 'Captain Manyhands'. Crosby also said on the Howard Stern show that his relationship with Stills was based on " hero worship. He was the best singer, wrote the best songs and when he was on stage everything he does just swings.",

1967 was considered The Summer of Love. Joni Mitchell had a relationship with both David Crosby and Graham Nash. She wrote songs about both. Song About The Midway was about David, and River was about Graham Nash.

Wonderful reaction from you two. CS&N, CSN&Y are like comfort music. Growing up in the late 60's and early 70's there is so much impactful music to draw upon. However, I must confess with so many tunes floating around in my head I go back often to this music. It is always an album listening moment and I never grow tired of it. Truly masterful vocal magic that is so satisfying. Thanks again!

I saw them in 1977 at Rupp Arena, in Lexington, Kentucky. We were in the fifth row, center seats. They walked out on stage, and received a standing ovation. When they picked up their instruments, the crowd sat down, and you could hear a pin drop in the arena. After each song, they received standing ovations. The crowd sang every song. It was truly a love affair. David Crosby said (at the time) it was the best crowd they'd ever performed for. I'll say. It was the best concert I ever saw.

The Spanish lyrics at the end (from what I searched): Que linda me la traiga Cuba, la reina de la Mar Caribe. Cielo sol no tiene sangreahi, y que triste que no puedo vaya, Oh va, oh va, va. The back story of this song is ... Steven Stills had been romantically broken up with Judy Collins. On her birthday he came knocking at her door with a bottle of wine, a bouquet, and his guitar. He sung her this song then asked if they could get back together. She said no, bit she told him it was a really good song.
