Stills and Judy Collins had broke up and Stills wrote this song to try to get her back. When he played it for her she said, "It's a beautiful song but we're not getting back together" or words to that effect. They have remained good friends however and toured together not so many years ago. The Deja Vu album is a masterpiece. "Wooden Ships" should be your next reaction.

Wooden Ships was cowritten with Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane. They both recorded it and the CSN version both came out a couple weeks earlier and it was within the radio 3 minute airplay time. The JA version, which I consider the definitive version, was much longer and so was rarely played on the radio and then only because there was so much demand for it. Perhaps do a side by side listen and give us your thoughts.

Agree. & After Wooden Ships, do Wooden Ships by Jefferson Airplane. Same song done in a very, very different way by a different vocal harmony group in the same scene.

"Fear is the lock" means fear of getting hurt prevents one from opening up to and committing to relationships with others.

Brad was on to something when he said this song has a "Woodstock vibe." CSN&Y played this as their first song of their set at the Woodstock Festival, in a "legendary" performance. They were "scared shitless" according to Steven Stills, immediately at the end of the song. One of the best performances of the Woodstock film.

Man, to be a twenty-something hanging out in Laurel Canyon in the late-60s would have been epic.

My mother was Scottish and northern England she had a lot of crazy quotes between her and my grandparents, The way I was brought up and the mentality in the household another thing she would always say "That in which you fear the most will come back to haunt you" my dad who was from York England and died when I was six' left my mother to raise five boys on her own, she was tough as nails. I will never forget I was coming out of baseball practice and I got jumped by three guys from a rival school. I had a broken jaw two broken ribs and a concussion with the brain bleed. I thought I was gonna get some type of sympathy I was 16. All she told me was my older brother Warren would have taken that battle on and won. HARD CORE

People have fears, and they resist letting anyone in. Especially anyone who tries to get serious! If you want to get to someone who is a prisoner of their fears, begin by keeping it light, fun, non-serious! Laughter is the key to their heart!

During a July 15, 2007 interview for the National Public Radio program All Things Considered, Stills revealed that Collins was present in the studio when the demo tapes were recorded and had advised him, "Don't stay in here [in the studio] all night now." Stills also commented that the breakup with Collins "was imminent. ... We were just a little too big for one house." Stills said that he liked parts of this demo version of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" better than the released version; the song and other demos of early Crosby, Stills and Nash songs were released commercially on the album Just Roll Tape.[3] Collins and Stills had met in 1967 and dated for two years. In 1969, she was appearing in the New York Shakespeare Festival musical production of Peer Gynt and had fallen in love with her co-star Stacy Keach, eventually leaving Stills for him. Stills was devastated by the possible breakup and wrote the song as a response to his sadness. In a 2000 interview, Collins gave her impressions of when she first heard the song: [Stephen] came to where I was singing one night on the West Coast and brought his guitar to the hotel and he sang me "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," the whole song. And of course it has lines in it that referred to my therapy. And so he wove that all together in this magnificent creation. So the legacy of our relationship is certainly in that song. Collins elaborated in a 2017 interview: Afterwards, we both cried - and then I said: "Oh, Stephen, it’s such a beautiful song. But it’s not winning me back." I’ve always understood that people have to write about their lives. Most of all, I felt the song was flattering and heartbreaking - for both of us. Neither one of us walked away from that relationship relieved. We were feeling like, "Whoa, what happened?”[4]

Focusing solely on the lyrics works for rap, but for rock it's like eating soup with a fork. You only get to hear these songs for the first time once, I like to see people get the most out of it:)

How many songs have you listened to for the first time and not really connected? It’s usually the 3rd or 4th listen that the magic comes out. sometimes it’s even more.

As usual, Lex gets it as she says she’s just getting into the vibe and harmonies and not getting too much into the lyrics. As usual, Brad gets weighed down analyzing the lyrics too much. Just enjoy the sound. The harmonies are amazing.

She’s got an amazing feel for music as an art. Brad is very intellectual and cerebral, but I’m more impressed by Lex’s instinctive feel.

The song is about Stills crush on Judy Collins from what I remember. Judy Collins had some great songs too.

Still one of my all time favorite albums!

It was already mentioned, but this is a song about the relationship between Stephen Stills and Judy Collins. Her star was on a rapid rise as his was just starting. The references to specific days was Stills way of mocking the time constraints she was putting on their relationship. Also... Definite Woodstock vibe, CSN preformed this song in the middle of the night there.

That Woodstock gig wasn't good. They didn't have a band, the mix was crap, they hadn't yet meshed live because it was their first gig together (hot off a smash hit album). It sounded like a rushed last-minute campfire BS. I've loved them more than any other band for half a century, so I'm not just throwing shade. (I found out recently they felt the same way.) It's just been very frustrating trying to convince a different reaction couple to give them a REAL listen, instead of saying "meh" after hearing their pathetic Woodstock gig and never, ever listening to them again. For Pete's sake, listen to at least one song off the album that got them invited to Woodstock in the first place. ... Which is what these young folks just did.

This song was written by Stephen Stills, for Judy Collins. Stephen was doing the latin lyrics at the end. David Crosby and Graham Nash were the backup high harmonies. Neil Young hadn't joined them yet. This song is so tight, both in harmonies and instrumentation. They did it their first gig together at Woodstock. Stephen was with Buffalo Springfield, David Crosby was with the Byrds, and Graham Nash with the Hollies. They're all tremendous singers with great ranges. All three were lead singers in their own right, and they found the class, desire and patience to not always be the center of the song, which is one reason their harmonies were always so incredible. Good pick. Try one of theirs about the end of the world, Wooden Ships.

CSN first and best recording. A true classic. I was a junior in High School when this song came out and saw them sing it on the film Woodstock and I was blown away. This song has 4 movements. He was singing about a blue eyed beauty Judy Collins after a painful break up. Best harmonies ever. Love the crescendo in Spanish at the end of the song.

when you evaluate these songs, you need to remember that these were written for the times and the world we lived in THEN. If you keep that in mind, you may not trip so much on the lyric. They really are pretty simple and usually mean what they say. I love watching you young bloods hearing this music for the first time, it makes me remember the first times I heard these songs. You two are a Joy and a Gift.

Let it be said in Stephen's favor, Judy Collins was an amazing songstress and also one of the most haunting beauties of the era. He chose with his heart but lost.

CSN's harmonies are spot on. SO good.

Ahh yes! My favorite from the Woodstock era. Teach Your Children and Helplessly Hoping, Southern Cross and of cause Woodstock. Stills wrote this about Judy Collins. She made it hard to be loved.

I think he means that if either he or she is afraid, that locks them away from each other. But laughter opens up their hearts. This is a pleading, "please don't leave me, but I guess you're gone already" song.

Brad you had this one right out the gate! What had you confused was the status of the relationship, It's a love song to someone who has moved on.

Brad actually dissects the lyrics and tries to get to the true meaning behind that. I know I sound old, but I doubt many young people of your gen take the time to get behind the words. You guys are so smart, and seeing you listen to these songs with fresh ears really is like hearing them for the first time myself.

CSN harmonies were all the rage 50 years ago. Brad couldn’t resist smiling at “you make it hard.” Double entendres galore. 😄

I disagree! I bought this album in 1969 at Tower Records. It was the first album that included a lyric sheet!! I sat down smoked a joint and put on my headphones! I listened to the entire album and was blown away reading the lyrics to every song! I was a huge Buffalo Springfield fan and Steven fan from the 3 Springfield albums! And had seen them live!

The wonderful thing about songs is, sometimes it's the lyrics that a listener should focus hearing on and sometimes it's the music itself. The best songs are usually both lyrically and musically creative. When this song was written in the 70's, the motto was "free love'. I think the tune is about two band members falling for the same girl or even two different girls. One was blonde, blue-eyed folk singer Judy Collins and the other seems to be a dark-skinned Cuban beauty.

Steve Stills was the lead singer and the songwriter. Bruce below has the story for you. This sounds the best, but you could have chosen to watch the video of them doing this song at Woodstock, only their second live performance as a group. CSN were from other well-known groups and you have heard them individually with those groups. They were the first to be called a "supergroup". Marakesh Express was their first hit in 1969 when the Woodstock Festival was. Their first two albums are very much classics.

This is an all-time classic. One of the sweet voices you noticed in the harmonies was Graham Nash, who was once a leading member of the British sixties band the Hollies. You have featured Hollies songs on this channel before.

I head this song as a child repeatedly and ever since had *no idea at all* what they lyrics. I certainly got a vibe from it though. So it's interesting to now finally see the words all clearly.

The only reaction video we need is to see Lex smile and dance. She’s so cute.

She is afraid to commit , FEAR , relax , laugh , enjoy and it'll be alright ! Make it hard to wait around for your love ! That last voice was Stephen Stills !

Lots of great songs from CSNY! Hippy folk rock, great vocal harmonies. Very groovy. Nice late '60s/'70s band. Love the last parts of this song. They ended up having good solo careers as well and other projects into the 1980s, 1990s.

You can't take a protractor and analyze a Jackson Pollack. This song is absolutely about vibe and harmony.

Hopefully you will get to Southern Cross somewhere down the line. One of my favorite songs of all times.

I'm sad I missed the live stream this was on. I'm the one who begged you forever to do "Carry On / Questions". This would be my #2 Choice. Another comment has an appropriate list of their biggest hits. I'd still love if you did "Bus Stop" by The Hollies for Graham Nash and "Eight Miles High" for David Crosby. You already heard Stephen Stills and Neil Young in "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield.

I love Stills high falsetto part. Saw them do the Suite: at the Boston Garden in 1977. Stills held that high note for so long brought the house down.

The first time they played this song was at Woodstock. In case no one has mentioned it until now. In fact, they had just written it and it was the first time the played it anywhere in public.

Brad, you need to remember that lyrics are poetry set to music. Poetry doesn't follow a straight line. It isn't linear. Some of it is very free-form. You can't expect a straight narrative from a song lyric, not every song tells a "story" in the way you seem to expect. But it's interesting to hear your take on some of these songs, especially when juxtaposed with Lex's more instinctive take on the same song. I'm with Lex most of the time.

Mama Cass Eliot from The Mama’s and the Papa’s had them sing together (CSN) for the first time in her kitchen at her house in Benedict Canyon in the hills just north of the Sunset Strip in Hollywood!!! She told them to get together. The Doors were the house band at the Whiskey A Go Go not far from there on Sunset. Amazing music from many bands came out of that area in those years!!!🎶👌🎵😁🎶😁🎵✌️

These guys had some of the best harmony ever, even now its hard to find many that match them for nailing the harmonies. It was in that where they created some amazing music. Wooden Ships, Guinevere, Teach your children... they were untouchable.

I realize you guys look for meaning in each of these songs. That said, art is to be absorbed and that sometimes takes time. Don't get caught up in absolutely knowing what the song is about. Someone will tell you in the comments section anyways :)

I had a Teacher when I was in 11th grade who would play this song every morning before class. We all loved it.

Killer trio. With the addition of Neil Young. Their first big gig was Woodstock and this is the song they played.

CSNY were incredible. Beautiful lyrics and beautiful instrumentation. Check out "Almost cut my Hair". They must have been really stoned!

I am 55 yo and have heard this song at least 100 times in my life. Never had a frigging clue about what the song was about. Now, in the age of the Internet, it is easy to look up such things. Proud of Lex for at least guessing.

"Fear is the lock, and laughter the key to your heart". For me this means that she was afraid of being hurt and that locked her heart to possibilities. Making her laugh and be comfortable is the key to melting the locked heart and letting someone in. Just my interpretation.

Judy is Judy Collins a popular folk Singer at the time and the lyrics as I understand it were from a list of things Steven had written about her that's why they're kinda all over the place, also why the melody kinda floats around. Graham Nash also wrote a song about about his relationship with Joni Mitchell who wrote the song Woodstock which they recorded, the song Grahm wrote about her was Our House its on The Deja Vu album you should react to that one as well. You should react to "Marrakesh Express" or/ and "Helplessly Hoping". They are both from their first album just like this "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". On their second album Deja Vu which many have already mentioned the group was a bit different that is to say they had added Neil Young and the group was Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The lyrics are pure poetry. The meaning of the lyrics are different to each listener. Let it be your own interpretation, and yes the meaning changes every time you listen.
