    Sacrilege! CS&N are KNOWN for their harmonies! It is what put them on the map as a MEGA successful group. Stephen Stills is consistently noted as a top tier guitarist, one of the best in the business. CS&N is one of my most favorite groups of all time!

    This super group was all about their clear voices harmonizing and their lyrics, which we listened to carefully as a generation. When they got together, they could sit around and find that their voices were instantly complimentary. The instrumentation is secondary in their songs. It is the vehicle allowing them them to sing together and express their thoughts around a tune.

    This is about Judy Collins. She was a hippie who always let musicians crack at her place at Laurel Canyon. A lot of them ended up falling in love with her, and when you guys get around to hearing her songs, you'll know why. She sounds like an angel. Anyway, Stephen Stills had it bad for her. When someone asked her about this song, apparently she said, " It's such a beautiful song. But he's still not getting me back."

    Lucie Melahn I saw an interview of Judy Collins and Stephen stills from two years ago on CBS Sunday morning. They were talking about they're meant to be, enduring relationship on this earth. They have continue to be very good friends, performing together over these years. Judy said on her birthday in 1969 Steven presented her with a bouquet of flowers, an Awesome Martin guitar, and this song. The you are talking about was made by her during this birthday celebration. She said "such a beautiful song, but you're still not getting me back". they both chuckled over that one. So nice to still see them together😍 This is the link to the interview kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4KOm9V8ZM64eqg.html

    I didn't take as to where they had an "issue" with the harmonies, but rather that the harmonies could've been overdone a bit. Granted, that's who CSNY are, but it's a matter of personal preference. Alex would've liked to have heard a little more solo with the harmony in the background to break things up a little. At least that's my take on it and I understand where they're coming from.

    Fair review and reaction, and remember - this is a 51 year old song. You guys have an interesting perspective. A little bit of life experience may help to understand the song, but it's also more relatable if you grew up during the time this was released. It came out in 1969 (I was 8 years old) and it took CSN to the stratosphere. The fact that they performed it at Woodstock (their 2nd performance together in front of a live audience,) and it was included in the movie and the soundtrack album helped it quite a bit. It got a ton of radio play at the time, too - which is odd when you consider it's such a long tune. Even the AM Top-40 stations played the full-length version, which was basically unheard of at the time. Next HAS to be Carry On (and yes, Neil Young is on that one...) Lots of harmonies, of course, but plenty of solo singing too. Another is Wooden Ships - plenty of Steven Stills singing solo, with harmonies in all the right places.

    I am a bit older (70) and I remember being in a record store (yeah vinyl haha) and looking through some recent album releases. When I got to this one the picture grabbed me so I pulled it out and knew I was buying it even though I had yet to hear any song on it. There was Dave Crosby from the Byrds (one of my favorite bands ever), Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield (saw them live) and Graham Nash from the Hollies (loved them too) on the goddam cover. I figured "No way this is going to be bad". Damn I was right haha My favorite song: Guinevere From Wikipedia: 🎸☮ In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: "That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. It's about three women that I loved. One of whom was Christine Hinton - the girl who got killed who was my girlfriend - and one of whom was Joni Mitchell, and the other one is somebody that I can't tell. It might be my best song."[2]

  • @davearonow65

    @davearonow65

    4 жыл бұрын

    They didn't exactly write the harmony book. Little band you may have heard of called the Beach boys are the Gods of harmony. Unlike these rudimentary musically simple harmonies, The Beach Boys wrote extremely complex harmonies that only sounded simple by design. A whole entire other level of art and talent. CSNY was good music, but by no means did they write the book on harmony just because they heavily loaded their songs with harmony. There is another band you may have heard of called The Beatles, who were masters of harmony. In fact, there is a reason The Beach Boys were the only band that The Beatles considered their equals.The suggestion that CSNY wrote any sort of book on harmony is absurd. All the doo wop bands and R and B bands of the 50s wereasters at harmony. Before that there were groups like the Andrews Sisters etc etc etc. CSNY heavily loaded their songs with harmony, but that, on my opinion, was more a tactic to hide the fact that not any single one of them had a great stand out lead sounding voice so the best way to hide the lack of vocal quality was just to hide it with harmony. It worked for them. The songs are good and they sound good. But these were no vocal geniuses. They just heavily loaded their songs with pretty simple pretty basic harmonies.

    It's a lot of fun for me to listen to these two pompous asses dissecting the music of my youth. With no knowledge of the music that came before the mid to late 60s and early 70s, they pontificate on music they have no experience with. It's really a hoot to listen to as they sit there sipping their whiskey.

    I was at a CSN concert in Minneapolis in the late 70's (I believe it was billed as their (first) farewell tour. Anyway, that moment where he hits the high note was amazing. The crowd went nuts. The cheering got louder and louder, and constant, to where they actually stopped the song and took it in. When things calmed down, before they went back to the song, David Crosby took the mic and said that had never happened to them before, having to stop a song in the middle to wait for the crowd to settle down a bit so they could go on. I get chills thinking about it. It truly was amazing.

    This is a vibe of those heady days. They didn't have Pentatonix or digital anything. These guys were writing into the future....not from the past. They were the voice of our time. Inventing, laying down paths. The days then were not so frenetic as today. This is more folk laid back mixed with rock. Life was simpler.

    Love this! I adore their harmonies, lol!!! Thanks, guys!! I'd love to see reactions to the live versions of Jackson Browne's *The Load Out/Stay & Running On Empty!* These performances are phenomenal! The energy is amazing! A few other JB songs that are great: Doctor My Eyes, The Pretender & Somebody's Baby.

    Supposedly, Stephen Stills was SO in love with Judy Collins that after they broke up he wrote BOOKS of his heartbreak. This song, as long as it is, is a condensed version of that.

    The acoustic guitar used in the intro is tuned to E-E-E-E-B-E which gives it that really nice open sound. Absolutely LOVE this song, man.

    "Chicago" (technically a Graham Nash solo effort but embraced by the group in live performances), and "Ohio" featuring Neil Young, are two of the most important protest songs of the sixties. A must listen for any exploration of what this era was all about musically and politically.

    The entire story is amazing. Crosby, Stills, and Nash welcomed Neil Young to join them at Woodstock. They debuted a song dedicated to Steven Stills beautiful and talented girlfriend. So Neil Young proceeded to steal her away from Stills, eventually marrying her. Keep your friends close. Keep your enemies closer.
