Cricket in the 70's - The Chappell Era - 2002 - Cricket Documentary
Спорт
The 1970s turned out to be the most tumultuous period in the history of Test Cricket. In a short space of time, the game of cricket was catapulted from its genteel 19th century origins and transformed into the mass marketed super-sport. CRICKET IN THE 70'S - THE CHAPPELL ERA is a rollicking jaunt down memory lane for those that can remember and for those wanting to learn more about a remarkable period that changed the way cricket was played.

Blown away seeing this. I wish every country had similar films about progression og cricket in every decade. Its too late now most of the players who played in 60's are no more and the bunch of 70's is also getting lesser.

@@denaliwarnakula7684 Ian was in the comnentating box and vehemently disagreed with the ball being bowled underarm. It's not too hard to understand for anyone with an IQ above 80
Some of the deliveries that Thommo bowled were well over 100mph. Even behind his arm, the ball was a blur.
WSC records should be recognised. Pretty much the best 55 players were there. It's a disgrace those records aren't counted.

The last few seconds are fascinating when Greg said that he paced out the distance from the stumps to the slips when Thommo was bowling, over 30 metres! Incredible.
Thanks,real beaut to watch
Shocking that I read the groundsman of western Australia earned more than Dennis Lillee in a cricket season. Aussie cricketers were really shafted at the time.
Great program on the history
WSC was the kick in the bum the game needed.
That was the best cricketing video I have ever seen. Thanks. Take care and stay safe everyone. Tom.
Thank-you! A good story well told.
That final test in 1972 series was the last time an Oval Ashes test was won by the side batting second - I was in my mother's womb at the time. And yet, Paine, and then Cummins stupidly gave up the chance to bat first when they won the toss in 2019 and 2023 respectively.
The segment at 1:03:15, which was deleted in some edits of this documentary, was probably one of the most compelling parts. The interviews with Tony Greig about Boycott and with John Snow explaining why both didn't go on the 1974/75 tour of Australia under Denness explained many things.

@@Bernie8330 actually after the 1st test in 1975 when Denness was sacked and Graig took over for the remaining three tests. No. He came after two tests of watching Thomson bowl with his busted shoulder and as you correctly pointed out, Lillee did not tour England in 1977 after the centenary test (to rest himself for the start of WSC).
@Bernie8330

@@nyosito I didn't know that about 1975, but it sure reinforces the point. Just to be clear, I don't believe for a moment that Boycott was scared of getting physically hurt, I am sure that what he was actually scared of was sustaining damage to his reputation as a leading test batsman.
Jesus that ball to gavaskar....god!!
FANTASTIC VIDEO. But what a shot by King Richard off Denniss Lillee.
What I cannot work out is why didn't ABC (Australia) ask for the Colour footage from 1972 from the BBC (UK), as there would have been arrangements for ABC archive. It also shows that it was not just Australian players who were unhappy with that were paid, it was players from all round the world. There is footage from Sportsmight with Coleman (BBC) in 1968 that England players were unhappy with the pay for what turned out to be the cancelled tour. It also makes me wonder why the ACB in 1971-72 ask India to either tour for Five Tests or rescheule to have both New Zealand and India play three tests each to have dual tours as England had been doing this since 1965.

According to Chappell, when asked about his career, Bradman said sometime in the 80s, “I managed to do it all without getting my hair permed or getting divorced.” As Ian puts it, “I thought, ‘Bugger you, mate. It’s personal now.’ And from then on, if I was asked a direct question about Bradman, I would say exactly what I had experienced. “
