Take that! Matthew Hayden advancing at pace bowlers

Спорт

Two steps and BANG! Is there a better sight than the big burly Queenslander opening batsman Matthew Hayden walking down the wicket to smack a fast bowler back over his head or square or of the wicket for a four or six? (Answer: No)

Haydos warranted his place in this Aussie side not only due to his ability to perform but also due to his in your face approach. He was like a giant bully who wanted to kill a bowler. Almost all cricketers who picked their all time 11 had him as their opener.

I spent 7 years (1993-2000) telling anyone who'd listen that Hayden should be opening for Australia ahead of Slater and then Elliot and all I got was "he's not good enough", "he'll never make it". What a legend he was. I'll never forget that banner at the GABBA in 1996 that said "The only thing bigger than Haydens average, is Taylors bum".

I was lucky enough to be at the Gabba for the Aus vs NZ Test in 2001. Half the match was washed out, but in the first innings I was witness to Hayden and Langer's first 200-run opening partnership (IIRC), and then on the last day when Waugh and Fleming decided to try and get a result out of a match that was otherwise destined for a draw, Waugh sent Hayden and Gilchrist in to bat. Two overs later, they had about 30 on the board.
