Cricket hunting by a hamster living in a dirt cage

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

hamster in the soil! bioactive cage super nature hamster house
Mealworms and crickets were put in a hamsters soil house . Are hamsters really good at hunting?
It has been two months since the hamster was raised in a single soil cage. We try to make it as close to the natural environment as possible. Watch to see if you can hunt insects in a cage with soil and plants and if the insects live as insects.

I own a bio active enclosure too, which means you add springtails to the soil. These clean up the mold and leftover food and they're too tiny for a hamster to eat. It's perfect, it creates a natural habitat and due to the springtails who keep things clean it doesn't smell and you have barely and maintenance aside from keeping the soil a bit moist.

its actually not incredibly difficult to do a natural, if just less detailed, hamster cage. adding enough soil to an enclosure, springtails, and natural decor (hides logs sticks leaves, all inexpensive materials) isn't very expensive. sure setting it up takes a couple hundred but that's what you should expect when buying an animal instead of an easy fun $50 plastic castle kit

Hi, I was wondering if you are having much luck with the plants in your enclosure. Are they surviving? I would really love to have a set up with sprouts and veg or a carpet of micro-greens on the top soil and then have them be able to dig their tunnels underneath. I have some pet mice and they are very committed to digging tunnels (who knew?) but I don't know which substrate would be best for the tunnels in terms of the strength to keep the tunnels from collapsing. Any advice you could give would be appreciated. Thank you!

I've done similar things for frogs before but you've inspired me. My first fully bioactive "Hamster" tank is underway. I even managed to get an old 55 gallon tank for free from a friend. Some supplies arrive in the mail today and then tonight I'm buying the rest at a local store. After I get the tank settled and balanced with plants and cleanup crew and such I'll be introducing the main inhabitant/s (I might get two dwarfs, we will see).

Remember to never put two hamsters together in the same cage as they will fight each other for territory till death

@@kjeldkaj This is very, very far from true for all hamsters. Some prefer company. Syrian and teddy bears can often get stressed and fight each other, but most dwarfs are content in groups provided they have the space. (Long time hamster keeper here, this is just my first time setting up a bioactive cage for one).

@@bhutwheyttherismor86 not "very very far from true". It is the general thumb rule for keeping hamsters! Btw, dwarf hamsters may like each others company for the first 2-3 months of their lives, but then begin fighting. Look at this video from Victoria Rachel explaining kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqWYxtuccd2YY84.html

Today I learned that hamster are not vegetarians. Always thought they eat grain. Maybe be cause in my country it’s also called corn-wolf. So they are omnivores like us.

mostly vegetarian, only eat crickets if they can catch them, which does not happen too often in nature.
