Cretan Food - 100% PURE LOVE Farm-to-Table Mediterranean Cuisine in Crete!

This was incredible traditional Cretan food experience!

The top reason I wanted to visit Crete, the biggest island of Greece, was to experience the food. Cretan food is known for its incredible Mediterranean based food diet. Even though it’s an island surrounded by the sea, Crete is such a huge island that it’s actually more well known for lamb and meat rather than seafood.
One day while my wife and I were in Chania, Crete, we drove over to a countryside restaurant in the mountains called Ντουνιάς (I’m not sure of the English name). Immediately as we arrived, and met the incredibly passionate owner, and watched him cooking traditional Crete food in clay pots over fire, I knew it was going to be an incredible food experience.
Before eating, I took a quick walk around the farm, to see all the produce and animals they had on their property. The owner was quick to mention to met that it wasn’t just a restaurant, but a farm. Everything he cooked was from his farm on his land - the meat, the vegetables, the fruit, the seasonings, even the wine. Everything was local and seasonal.
After walking around, I just asked the owner to serve me a few of his favorite dishes of the day. We enjoyed some incredible house wine, bread, and then mountain goat. Everything was purely delicious, seasoned with wine and rosemary, and full of natural Mediterranean heb flavors. We were also served a few more Cretan dishes, all of which were stunningly good.
My only complaint was that we didn’t plan to stay long enough. We had to eat, and then head back to Chania town because I had something else planned that day as well. It’s the type of restaurant you could go and hang out for the entire day.
Ντουνιάς - An amazing authentic Crete food restaurant where everything is cooked in the traditional way by pure love.
Total price - 34.90 EUR for everything
Thank you for watching this authentic Crete food video!

I love Crete and have been many times. Once we stayed in Rethymnon and one evening went searching for somewhere to eat, away from the tourist areas. At the end of an alley we saw some faint light and went for a look. There were 3 tables, surrounded by grape vines in the courtyard of a very very old building. My wife speaks Greek and we met the owner who invited us to look in her kitchen. No menu, 4 or 5 dishes, fish, meat, vegetables, that's it, laid out on her worktop. We sat down, and the table filled with food. The lady even ran somewhere, to get our preferred drink's as she didn't have it in her kitchen. That meal, is one of my most memorable meals, ever. Simple food, cooked perfectly. A very special place.

Crete is a true gem! I'm Greek so you'll think that there's some bias, but honestly it's one of the most amazing places to live or visit. Imo it's the best place in Greece, even though some other islands get more credit. Btw I'm not Cretan. :)

@Cyrus King sorry you had a bad experience.Being greek myself and working in tourism you can come across such behaviours in the "tourist traps" like in most countries. The difference is that in the places Mark visits none of those ppl are trying to take your money. That is the original Greek experience.Maybe try to go some places with locals next time. This restaurant is a typical "village restaurant" in Greece. And believe me,even if they don't give you back your money they will give you complimentary dishes or something else on your way out. It's how simple Greek ppl express their gratitude that you chose to visit or eat at their place. To show you they are glad and honoured. My parents and grandparents are exactly like that and they don't run any restaurants.;)

@@mr.gutgemeint6316 You are right to be dountful about the honesty of the move, but remember that what we watch here is merely a glimpse of the footage, so the existence of the camera did not guarantee that we would see this gesture for sure. It was Mark's choice to include it and that's proof that at least he saw this as an honest gesture. Moreover, even if the owner did it because Mark is a youtuber, it still remains a totally positive thing to do from an ethical perspective: "you are so graciously showcasing and praising my small restaurant to your international audience. I can't take your money too", which wasn't obliged to do though as we 've seen in all of his other videos were no other owner denied him to pay. The most possible scenario is that Mark paid to the waiter and left, this sm went inside with the money of his table, the owner caught it up and thus returned back to give them back to him out of filotimo (a virtue we cherish, untranslatable). I am convinced of this because as a Greek i know that, for good and bad, we (except me😛) never overthink.

This video just brought me to tears soon as reality hits me. It will take a while before tourism can go back to how it was pre-pandemic. Because of this video, Crete is now on top of my list post pandemic. Please give details of how we can go to this farm. It’s a mystery to me how people can give this one a thumbs down. @Nati Raymond. Palestine is the territory that is now comprised of parts of the State of Israel and the whole of the Palestian Authority territories. Prior to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, it was a territory mandated to Great Britain and prior to that a province of the Ottoman empire. The name Palestine is derived from a native people of the region, the Philistines.

Mark thanks for sharing this video. As a Turkish American who also has Greek roots; i love Greece, Greeks, Greek food(which is 99% the same as western Turkish cuisine) We are two halves of the same apple, brothers and share very similar culture especially in the western part of the Turkey. Not just the islands but also mainland of Greece is amazing. I spent close to a year in mainland and some time in Zakynthos. Hope to retire there one day. Peace is already winning hearts on both sides of the Aegean and i hope it expands more. I suggest everyone in US who wishes to go to Greece and the islands; to just go! Don`t waste your life on dreaming and postponing! Just go. You`ll have the best food, amazing culture, climate and hospitality.

Cretans are a quite special people, just as Greece is a special country. I know only Crete, and can't speak much for mainland Greece, but I can honestly say that his experience in this restaurant in Crete was the rule rather than the exception here. Very good video. I like his uninhibited enthusiasm, which do not think is affected in any way..

I'm Greek living in Australia and when I did go to Greece for a while when I was little those berries my grandma use to pick for me all the time, they were my FAVOURITE! I also was on the farm quite a lot and some things really freaked me out... like the bugs... some animals are scary because they are rough. Also the flower's are so addicting and refreshing... I can't stop at 2... gotta hav like 10 AHAHA but yeah overall you really experience every part of the life cycle of your food. Truly an amazing experience! Thank you so much for sharing Greece, the island life, the food, the environment, the people and hospitality. I'm sure all your Greek viewers appreciate you showing the good that still thrives :)
