I was reading up on it and this version of 'All Quiet On The Western Front' was what Germany put up for it's entry in the "Best International Feature Film" category at the next Academy Awards. Germany makes around 200-300 films per year so if they picked this above everything else they have made it must be truly incredible. Despite it being considered a masterpiece this is the first adaptation made by a German director. It was written in 1928 and along with it's sequel, The Road Back, were among the books banned and burned by the Nazis. In 1930 the first adaptation won Best Director at the Oscars. When it was screened in Germany Nazi Brownshirts, otherwise known as Storm Troopers so let that info sink in, would flood cinemas with gas or mice and eventually outright attack anyone who went to see the film to stop people from seeing it. It goes on.

one of the main significances of the original "All quiet on the western front" is that almost every actor and extra were all actual soldiers from the first world war. Wendigoon has a very informative deep dive of the orignal on his channel. super heavy stuff.

It's in a couple movie theaters in Los Angeles. If I'm not mistaken, the streaming services sometimes release their best stuff in theaters to qualify them for the major award nominations. This helps get big names (in front of/behind the camera) interested in their projects. So, this may mean Netflix is looking to garner some solid nominations. Good luck to them because this looks amazing. But, like Adam, I doubt I'll watch it. I'm getting too old for this... stuff

Roald Dahl was raised in a boarding home where the kids were usually beaten, abused, and molested. His family were distant and didn't even seem to care. He grew up to be a military vet full of ptsd. So he wrote of magical stories where kids that were being mistreated would usually save themselves in fantastical ways. Magic, fantasy and mystical ways. Where adults were usually the monsters. But in almost every story there's an adult who somehow notices the child is being hurt, and helps rescue them like he never was. Where the spoiled and rotten kids who didn't care aren't the heroes like all the princesses and princes in books, but the poor forgotten child who has a good heart and a good mind. They're all great stories for kids to read, who are in a tough spot, to dream of being saved. But also to stay true to being good, and that maybe you can find that one person who can also help them.

I have a tinfoil hat theory about M3GAN. I think the niece is actually a much more sophisticated android (C4DY) and was being raised as a human try and learn how to be a real kid and fix some glitches the older models (like M3GAN) experienced. The team reactivates M3GAN in an attempt to speed through their research in Cady’s development in understanding grief. IDK. That seems like a Blumhouse twist though.

Im Westen nichts Neues/All Quiet on the Western Front is a stunning book written in 1928. It was never political, but about how wrong war is and how much suffering it brings to all. It's painful to read and to watch, and this new version will let us all suffer, but I will watch it with my 16-year-olds. Making sure our children understand that we all need to make sure history is not repeated is a big thing over here in Germany.

Last September, while filming Spirited, they did the Mika Grace Kelly challenge on Tik Tok and their video went viral. Then in November, they kind of "filled in" for each other on late night talk shows. Will was booked for the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote his Apple TV+ series The Shrink Next Door but Ryan showed up instead. Ryan was booked to be on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his Netflix movie Red Notice but it was Will who appeared.

I'm honestly fascinated by M-three-gan. The doll is riding that perfect uncanny valley line between too real and just far enough removed. The doll is played by an actress but, again, it looks both very real and also somewhat beyond what it seems a normal kid should be able to do. From what I can tell it seems like the actress, Amie Donald did most of it herself with her training in both acting and dance. It's an impressive performance. The movement and all the things the doll does are so interesting. If this doesn't lead to bigger things for this kid then something is very wrong. I need all the behind the scenes stuff to see how they did some of these sequences. Getting the look of the doll perfect is key as well. I wonder how many different looks they tried before landing on this one? I think I'm becoming obsessed with this movie. That's normal isn't it?

I love good war movies. I remember seeing the 1979 TV movie version back when I was a 6 or 7 year old kid, depending on what time of year it came out. It had a Blu-ray release with the extended version , but i think it's OOP now. It stared Ernest Borgnine and the actor playing Paul in that version looks a lot like the actor playing him in this Netflix version. So they did a pretty good job in casting here for fans of the '79 version. But as for the subject material goes, there's not been that many, if any really good WWI movies come out of Hollywood on the level of Saving Private Ryan. Hopefully this film is that good. And hopefully it gets a Blu-ray release.

I bought a variant shirt like a week before the term "variant" became synonymous with covid.... Felt weird wearing it in public.

That was an appropriate reaction to All Quiet on the Western Front and the trailer. It is an extremely *EXTREMELY* hard book. It doesn't shirk from the real, horrible, horror of World War I.

It’s so funny how from like 14:30-15:00 (the Megan trailer) it’s like Adam is going his his safe space in his mind. It’s like his whole body and mind is just “nope” 😀

The fights in the Creed movies are so damn visceral. Just right in the ring with them and feeling every hit.

"All Quiet on the Western Front" is the kind of war movie that gets made after 20 years of war. No glorification of the conflict.
