"Any accurate war film will necessarily be an anti-war film." My grandfather who served in the Pacific in WWII said this. He was proud of his service, but boy did he hate war.

Another quote that I think is similar to this is: "The most pro-soldier position you can have is to be anti-war" Basically, being anti-war doesn't put down or disregard the sacrifices soldiers have made, and the most pro-soldier position you can have is to hope they never have to go to war again.

So I've seen the movie in my local cinema in Poland and... all I can say is prepare yourselfs. It definitely delivers and is phenomenal on many levels but the sheer amount of devastating scenes the movie keeps throwing at you is sometimes even overwhelming. If you are the one to cry you're gonna cry a lot, you're gonna want to run away and scream but however deppressing the film is, it's absolutely worth watching. Couldn't get up from the seat when the credits rolled and left the theater with my hands shaking. Felt like I just came back from a war.

I've seen it and I was disappointed. Yes, it does show the horrors of war and is well depicted. However it has major logical flaws (e.g. a duckout in a trench is collapsing from attillery fire, but when they dig the soldiers out they are lying on the surface just covered by some planks). And not only the soldiers are butchered in the movie but also the original story of the book. Apart from a few small scenes, the only resemblences to the book are the overall setting (WWI) and the protagonist's names. They skip all the training, the learning process after arriving on the front line and overcoming the first shocks, the contrast between front and ongoing civil live at home,... This even makes the title "All quiet on the western front" totally meaningless, while in the book it is a major take-away: After fighting and suffering for so much time the protagonist is shot dead on a day where there was so less activity on the front line that this sentence was the only report sent to headquaters. Another impressive demonstration how irrelevant a single live in those conditions was. The movie ends completely differently!

My great uncle Alexander Parsonage is buried near Ypres in Artillery Wood cemetery. He was killed on June 5, 1916 in the opening salvos of the Battle of Mount Sorrel just outside of Ypres with the Canadian army. It was a nasty battle and his section of the front was on the opening section of the incredibly fierce German artillery strike. They could finally only identify him by a yellow scarf he was known to wear. Born on the Western Canadian frontier, Alexander was a first class horseman and apparently competed in the very first Calgary Stampede in 1912 in the saddle bronc event. 👌💘😉

When you talked about imagining how it must've felt seeing a tank for the first time, it reminded me of the comment Sam O'Nella made about roman peasants seeing giant behemoths with tentacles and horns on their faces (elephants) charging at them for the first time.

You got a point there, but I wouldn't compare the two experiences. First, no Roman peasants fighting Phyrrus at Heraclaea - just Roman soldiers. That means they were professional fighters, trained in combat and most of them veteran of the wars in Italy versus the Etrusacan and Gauls, some of them even survivors of the last Samnite War - so no peasants but fighters. The mental attitude of an hardened warrior is different from what a green horn may have, which is why the WWI scenario is so completely different since the overwhelming majority of the soldiers were conscripts without any previous experience of military life. Plus the men of the III century BC had a different relationship with reality than modern men. Gods, monsters and titans were real things for them, going to battle they prayed Mars and Hercules, signs and omens were gathered by Auruspices, all kind of natural phenomena such as wind, rain or sun on the battlefield were seen as a direct involvement in the fight by their Gods and Ancestors. Going to battle was hence both a material and mystic experience and witnessing huge lumbering beasts with uncanny appearance and almost impossibile to bring down wasn't such a shocking experience for them but just one of the many portents and/or manifestation of the supernatuiral's involvement in the fight they were used to. For the modern soldier on WWI batlefield , OTOH, being on the recienving end of a tank run down was a much more alarming experiience- He was a civilian up to few months before, he already was in shock and under stress for the artillery barrages previously received and he was now looking at something never seen before he coudn't figure out how tyo deal with and how to fight. So chances are that a well trained Roman soldier on seeing elephants woud have asked Mars for strenght, braced himself up counting on his comrades to do the same and faced the elephants hoping to be the one able to strike the heroic killing blow on the big beast, while the WWI private would have most likely go down on the ground shaking and rolling himslef up in ball or turn tail and flee on seeing tank lumber on upon him Just my 0.02€

Not really comparable, i'm pretty sure the Germans did not think a giant beast was coming their way. They already had strange looking armored vehicle back than, for us these days it would be like seeing a tank twice the size of a normal tank killing tanks with ease.

If the soldier had joined in 1917 then he would have seen tanks lots of times. Perhaps even a few of his own. To pretend that they were new in November 1918 is ridiculous. The French and British had both been using them since 1916 and the German using their own and captured ones since 1917.

Very disturbing and sad, especially because so many of these soldiers had bright futures ahead of them, being from universities and what not. Looking forward to seeing it too....kinda. It's going to be tough, i'm sure. I remember learning about the Great War in 7th grade and thinking how awful it was. Now I'm older and I realize how bad it was. I write this wearing a ring from my great uncle who served in the AEF (French heritage) in the 308 MG Btn. It's something I can only shake my head at trying to comprehend. The number of souls lost is absolutely mind-boggling. I am, however, proud to have this memento of someone who volunteered to walk into that.

I watched the movie on Netflix yesterday. It was a very good film. That being said, it’s been almost a day, and I still find myself unwilling to watch any more war movies. In the immediate aftermath of watching this movie I was shivering. In fact, after a scene an hour 45 minutes in, I saw that there was still 40 minutes left and genuinely questioned myself as to whether I would actually be able to sit through it.

In 1914 my grandfather joined the 5th Battalion York and Lancs Regiment. The Battalion was territorial meaning part time weekend soldiers who did this as a hobby. In 1915 they left home here in Rotherham Yorkshire England to travel to France. Only a handful survived to be demobbed in 1919. Then amazingly after starting families and restarting work, they that were fit enough all rejoined the Territorial Battalion to maintain their hobby!

My grandfather was with the 4/5th Royal Scots in 1914. Got two decorations in France in 1917 and was gassed, survived the war and served in WW2 with the Nigeria Regiment. An awful wife-beating drunk but a talented artist and calligrapher. He died before I was born and was both loved and loathed in equal measure by his children.

I read this book for school and personal interest and I have to say that I loved it! It hits hard in some parts and sometimes you wish that what you've just readen didn't happened. Now, I have a question for you, since I love war based films I wonder how they are seen from a historian perspective and especially, have you watched "Land of Mine"? To me, it's gorgeous, hard to digest but wonderful. It's set at WW2 end and talks about these young German prisoners who must free Dutch beaches from mines. That'd be great if you react to it as well.

Watch the original 1930 movie people, its absolutely a masterpiece. The original 1930 movie was basically made with nearly only WW1 veterans from Germany and Austria-Hungary as extras to the main american cast members. Its absolutely great and if you read up on it the director asked the veternas all the time for their input. The drills in the movie for example are all 100% the drills all the extras learned in WW1 and some of the most memorable scenes (hands on barbed wire for example, you will know what I mean) were directly inspired by a story from a movie extras personal war experience. Its an absolute treat (and put in the 1930s context it was a revolutionary movie for various things shown)

This film was as much of a masterpiece as the book was. This is the only war film I've seen where at the end you can't help but just feel sad. It's sickening and gruesome, but that is how WWI truly was. You literally feel like you're right there with those young men. All Quiet on the Western Front may be a work of fiction, but being that it was written by someone who was there and witnessed these horrors, you can best believe these were all things that were witnessed daily by everyone on both sides.

I think the WW2 war movie equivalent of it would be "Stalingrad" from 1993. I feel it's hugely underrated and largely forgotten now (maybe because it's not a Hollywood movie) but it's still my favourite war movie and most definitely one where you will also feel nothing but sadness by the end of it. I'm really excited for All Quiet, I loved the old movie as well.
