Creative X3 Review - $120 Perfection with "Super X-FI"... Is it the New CMSS 3D?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For a long time I have been asking Creative to bring back CMSS 3D, which last was featured on the Titanium HD Sound Card, though this time with the X3 (which is a portable USB DAC and ADC), they have introduced a different hardware processing called "Super X-Fi". We first checked this out at CES in early 2019. Though it looks like the tech is finally here, and it really is a cool piece of configurable tech to play around with to get fully immersed in your audio, it sounds a tad different to CMSS 3D, though does very similar things. I am sure with enough tuning you could get it sounding identical.
Though as for the frequency response, crosstalk and objective numbers, this DAC simply DELIVERS.

    The X3 is a no-brainer purchase when you're looking for better sound, it's the best little audio gadget I've had in years, it has so many settings and features to play with plus it has Creative's new Super X-FI technology! And with "SXFI Gen2" (which comes as a free X3 firmware update for all owners) it has become even better and Creative is already working on "SXFI Gen3"! Thumbs up!

    Back around 2003 I had an Audigy 2 Sound Blaster card with decent Creative speakers. Honestly the software was a little bit buggy but the sound it put out was amazing and it used to blow my friends away as nobody really used a PC as a sound system back then. I haven't used a dedicated sound card for years now but if you go down that route the results are awesome

    Question: Lets say I already plugged in my 5.1 speaker, then i decided to plug in my headphone (without unplug the 5.1 speaker), does it auto switch the sound channel to my headphones or do I need to do it manually? You also mention it reset EQ and Super Xfi to default after it was turn off, does it reset even though in Creative command you already switch it on? does the Creative command setting reset as well? Thanks in advance

    I'll add to the "you don't want to damage your ears" remark with my experiences. In 1999 I had a small container explode 18-12" from my left ear, could only hear hi pitched static while other sounds sounded as if they where far away and underwater. Years later I got an ear infection that made me effectively deaf in my right. While I was lucky and both time my hearing returned I'm left with a permanent low hiss. Its easily ignored with other sounds, but I need white noise to sleep or the hiss is loud enough to disturb me.

The room effect it adds seems odd at first, but now I don't want to game without it. The only thing that bugs me is that the SXFi effect is applied to mic monitoring channel. Something like hearing myself speaking on a low end PA system. Even with that, it's a great piece of tech. Thanks for the review.

    Super X-Fi is building off CMSS 3-D. SUper X-Fi's is more or less the same as X-Fi's old Entertainment Mode, which is one of the better virtual surround sound convolutions out there, but they've added a few more tweaks, such as customization (an old technology they acquired from Sensaura, a British technology firm in the early 2000's).

    On a side note - If youre serious about home audio and already have compatible speakers $100-120USD would probably buy you a pretty good secondhand AV receiver. Yes they are 10x the size of the X3 but the added bonus is that you can hook a lot more stuff up, can stream music via wifi/bluetooth, has FM/AM and net radio and the quality of the sound will leave the X3 in the dirt providing you got decent speakers. Obviously you wont get the fancy 3D audio gaming related features that Creative has to offer on their products but you will get a super high quality sound system that rivals that of cinemas if set up correctly with good speakers to match.... Even if you dont and you just hook it up with expensive bookshelf speakers from an old hifi unit you found in the shed. It should still sound pretty good. Apart from my subwoofer. my entire setup i bought pre-owned and that saved me a tonne of money.

  • @xXYannuschXx

    @xXYannuschXx

    Actually, CMSS3D on the Titanium HD supported this via OpenAL, even on Vista and higher. Sadly game devs didnt care (because it didnt work on consoles and the release of the Xbox360 and PS3 MASSIVELY shifted development from PC to consoles (which was further amplified by Microsoft pushing console gaming, because "PCs arent for gaming")) and Creative ended up only doing ONE major update of OpenAL to version 1.1 and then making it EOL. You can however still use OpenAL Soft (an open source continuation of OpenAL) to get HRTF to work in games using OpenAL, sadly this doesnt support EAX function as good as the Creative version, let alone the ones that had hardware accelerated EAX.

    Well you only have two ears so you only need stereo output, in theory, it's up to the actual applications etc to implement proper 3D sound (I think both Nvidia and AMD have path traced audio solutions available but idk if they've made it into any games yet)

    Super X-Fi sounds much better if you hear it direct through a good set of headphones. I know people like to crap on virtual surround tech but super x-fi is probably the best attempt at virtual surround that I've heard. Games, especially FPS titles sound amazing with it on and a good pair of headphones.

    @@SharrodVisuals I listened to some Sennheiser 6XX with SXfI and it sounded quite bad. I did the same with my Philips Fidelio Headphones X2HR and it sounds fantastic, especially with music. Can't say much about DT 990 pros with SXFI, but the X3 will run them fine on high gain. I'd say the more revealing headphones are the easier it is to hear the digital trickery of surround.

    Are you all guys trolling? It sounds super awful i can't tell any directions at all anymore with my mmx300... with no effects in cs go i could blindly shoot them, but with the sfx effect there is no way plus it sounds super hally. And the Scout mode was too short to make a conclusion but it also didnt felt as directional as the no fx one.... (judging by the video)

    The Gen 2 which the XFi has is better. However, one thing not mentioned in the review is the SXFI is based on photos of your head. I have tried mine and my wife's profile in RDR2 and Forza Horizon 4. I really like/love my profile in RDR2 but my wife's sound off with the "wrong" amount of reverb. Is the SXFI magical, not really but I really enjoy it over the SBX processing. The main thing is the rear channels sound like they are actually behind me and not at an ~160 degree angle right next to my head. The SXFI is also very nice for any video content even 2.0 sourced content. For music it is hit or miss. The older the recording the more I tend to like it.

    @@allansh828 You are being ripped off if you are paying $120 for RCA cable. Studios make up their own cables to measure and the cabling they use will typically cost less than $3.00 a metre. That's what the music you are listening to is recorded through. You've been taken in by the snake oil salesmen if you think $120 phono cables are going to give you a superior listening experience. There's only so much you can do with copper and shielding just has to be sufficient. Other specialist audio gear and hifi though does cost a lot of money. But the hifi world is rife with loony priced nonsense. Russ Andrews for instance will try to sell you a kettle lead for £2000.
