Just got this on a VG deal here in Australia. I've starting replaying some older and newer game titles using the Sound Blaster XG6 and my Sennheiser HD58 X Jubilee headphones and its like I'm playing these for the first time in almost a cinematic sound experience and as Techne mentioned, you feel like your part of that world of the game you're playing, hearing and it's weird to say, but also feeling the sound which is amazing and immersive!!!!!! Well done to Techne for this great review, but also well done to Sound Blaster for this excellent product too. :) Cheers from Australia

i was disappointed to find out it will NOT output dolby digital and dts through optical out via usb connected to PC (passthrough). who does this? its like they took 1 step forward and 100 steps back.

I wouldn't thing so, because the usb powers the unit for xbox use. yes it is round, but the optical cable is very long.

Great review Techne! If you can pin this post there one VERY important note about using the G6's optical connection with any console device at has optical out. You MUST set the primary audio output to optical and more importantly set the audio format to Bitstream Dolby (If prompted, select 5.1 ch). It is a NIGHT and DAY difference with the surround sound immersion (directional queue and distance) for PS4 and PS3 (but you also have to enable SBX surround (00:04:10) using the software on PC and set it anywhere that works best for you (Personally I set surround to 65). The G6 can also be powered by the PS3/4's usb port which also enables mic input. No need for usb wall plug. The games I noticed the biggest surround effect were most FPS games I played (Apex Legends, CoDs, Battlefields) heck even Batman Arkham series. You will seriously have an audible advantage in competitive shooters with this amp. Scout mode may make footsteps abit louder but SBX surround lets you hear where it's coming from. It's crazy good, the sound design that developers put into some games and this G6 amp just takes surround to another level of immersion when connected/setup properly.

Hey mate your reviews are awesome ! How do you compare to g3?? Like g6 is so much more expansive and I want a plug and play dac for ps4. I’m willing to spend more if it greatly improves sound/soundstage etc. but if only a little I think g3 will suit me. Ps I only been using plugging dt 990 into controller

I own g3 its a great value and is really user friendly... great options for expanding the sound stage with you average headsets within the 20-20k hz range makes them crisp clear and loud 👌... and you get 7.1 5.1 if you like that sound stage and its not bad like other 7.1's

Can you tell which mic you were using with the sound blaster when you were showing the mic effects in software?

I just received these in the mail, I updated the sound card on pc then hooked it up to ps4 via optical output and USB and put it on max settings holy crap wow. Amazing. I'm using hyperx cloud alpha BTW.(be sure to set it on chat audio)

I want original crisp sound and have the same headphones but the sound is not loud at all. I have trouble hearing footsteps in game. The wheel knob turns windows volume up (at 100 already) and doesn't help for volume. Help??

great review so if I connect to my xbox with the optical cable and the power as you mentioned I can control the volume from chat and from game?? IN XBOX???

yes, but it really shines when you use headsets with a bigger range than the average 20-20khz. but yes it does really boost every headset. I will have an awesome one, my new fav coming soon.

Hello I have a quick question for ya . What kind of head set do you recommend on the sound blaster. Please keep in mine. I’m not balking with money

I use gx6 s with beyerdynamic mmx3 2gen and it's a great combo that nothing beats, before that I had hyperx orbit s and it's comparable, while hyperx were magnetoplanar hearing aids with great sound, unfortunately the processing quality is tragic/plastic and often breaks

Would the 24 bit amp work with Beyerdynamic dt 990 pro headphones?

this Dac is capable of 600 Ohms. any gaming headset is incapable of achieving the potential of what this dac provides. If you want amazing sound quality and actually pin point enemies when gaming, look into using this dac along with the Beyerdynamic dt 990s 260 Ohms... the best headsets for gaming arent gaming headsets.

no I say don't use the surround sound any way, and I never do on any headset/amp. it just messes up the true natural sound.

it would depend on what headset/headphones I was using and what budget I was in. me personally I would probably go the X3 due to the lower price, simplicity of use, and has just enough for me.

What's everyones favorite settings, just got the G6 today, loving it so far playing on R6 Siege and BF1 but have no idea which settings to change?

Would this work on series x with a audio extractor? I'm trying to find a amp/dac that can allow me to voice chat online as well as make my gaming audio louder than just plugging in my headset to a controller.

Just an FYI for Xbox users that this can be used with party chat, but not game chat. Usually people who use DAC's/mixamps have a desk set up. What you have to do is hook up the G6 via optical to your xbox, G6 to your PC via USB and use the Xbox PC app to use part chat. Works with the Series S & X also but you'll needs an HDMI audio extractor to get optical, or use your TV optical output.

Or just plug the 3.5mm jack of your controller into the "Line In" port, and voila, game chat or part chat. But you will need a splitter to split the audio and mic ports with the controller 3.5mm jack, then use the mic of your choice with the remaining mic port.

So I could for example invite people to party on Xbox one and talk there. but wouldn't be able to in like overwatch like chat in game to speak to teammates I normally don't use mic on there this ping but would like to have option if I ever wanted to use it.

Also I heard through optical you can't adjust volume knob on dac can you still somehow turn volume up and down like you would this going through controller

The SBX G6 sounds better when it's on it's own power, with optical in. My Mac and PS4 both work fine on usb, but sound is better when the card is not being taken over by an external OS. Another thing to mention, if Dolby Digital is thrown at it you MUST use the SBX button ON to get the surround working, when you're sending stereo through anything turn OFF the SBX for better sound.

Hey nice review, Brian from Badseedtech mentioned the mic reverb has a stubborn delay (he hears himself a little later when speaking into the mic and gets distracted) and hates it for that, he said he cannot get rid of even by disabling everything the amp does, does it happen to your unit?

I didn't notice any at all with my tests with a few different headsets. Did he have the issues across multiple headsets? Also, I didn't mess with any of the mic settings, I just left it as is out of box.

The Techne why do you prefer the 770s. I’ve been trying to find a comparison but no one has made one. Also is there a big enough difference between the g5 and the g6 on the PS4 slim. I can get the 5 for $84 and the 6 for $112

Can you use this to hear pc and ps5 audio simultaneously?

Do you need a Splitter for the head set mic

I want to use the G6 with my Xbox and Nvidia shield, so if I plug it directly into the TV will the sound be enhanced as well?

you will have to change system hook ups, but yes it is solid across all devices

If I set some audio setting on the SBX mode on a pc, will the settings be the same and carry through an xbox and playstation?
