Creating special coloring effects with Derwent Inktense

In this video, I am demonstrating how I create the whimsical background with it's lush green leaves and tropical flowers; how I color the moth with its light airy wings and how a cloudy sky can be done with colored pencils. I used primarily Derwent Inktense with the help of colored pencils and a bit of gel pen highlights.
The beautiful illustration is from the Ruby Charm Colors Collection #1 by Susan Carlson (@rubycharmcolors). You can find her book as well as individual pdf drawings at her Etsy shop.

Super video. Derwent Inktense are so fun and quick to use for a first layer, coving all the white of the paper. I use regular colored pencils on top.

I love the idea of using Inktense with colored pencils and gel pens. I haven't been happy with how quickly Inktense dries and looks splotchy when covering larger areas but goes down so quickly. Adding colored pencil could really help to blend. What kind of paper are you using? Awesome job!

Hi Robyn, I use the Kuretake water brush. You can get it from Amazon.

I love my Kuretaki water brush.
I would love to find even a book like this to relax from the other artwork. I am sure it's pretty steep. I could learn so much more. I found the inktense blocks, pencils and artbars really really cheap. Please let me know where to purchase a sweet simple floral or animal one. Thank you Man I would so love to have something like that. Beautiful.

I believe this is a Ruby Charms picture on Etsy and Amazon, however this video is older but you could contact the owner of the Ruby Charms art, I think her name is Susan Carlson...good luck!

When you put your waterbrush aside to use the pencils, do you lay your water brush flat or upright?

I am glad you enjoy the video, sorry I didn’t keep a list of the colors at the time, my goal was to demonstrate the technique and you can use any colors you like.

Did you print the images on your own paper? The quality of the paper in her book doesn't support a wet application very well.
