An acquaintance of mine that spent his life changing/repairing AG tires and semi tires, used to show off his arm and grip strength with a 12lb sledge. Holding on by the base of the handle, he'd hold his arm out straight, parallel with the ground, and the hammer held vertically. Then, while only moving his wrist, he would slowly lower the hammer head towards his face, and touch his nose with the face of the hammer head, then slowly swing the hammer back to vertical. He could easily do 10 reps in a row with each arm and not break a sweat, it was damned impressive to see.

We blacksmith have a much cooler challtwith sledge hammers. You pick it up on the far end of the handle and hold it 😅upright. Then you are to lower the hammer very slowly to your nose until it touches the nose slightly, then bring it back up. If you fail you end up with a brocken nose or worse.

I once worked in a mining expansion project. The length of the storage barn we were installing piping in was 1500 yards (1.37 kms / 0.85 miles). I learned about this in a workout video I saw once, so I would take a 36" pipe wrench, or a length of pipe, or some other long and heavy item, and I would walk the length of the barn. I would keep my arm straight down by my side, no bending at all. I would hold the end of the handle of the wrench at 90 degrees from my arm for as far as I could, while slowly see how far toward the edge of the piping I could get to before losing power. It actually got a lot easier the more I did this. It was difficult when I was using 16 lb sledgehammers when I would install event tents. However, with each job I turned using tools like sledgehammers into a good on-site workout. I got paid to go to the gym, so I made the best of my work by using it to get in great shape.

Back in the day, 1980’s. Men on the jobsite would hold the end, extend it out and drop the full size sledge until it touched their nose, then back up and extend back out. I saw my father do this many times. That’s back when they built homes with claw hammers. He could turn a 16 penny backwards on hammer head, swing overhead, pin it, then flip and drive one shot. Saw this many times.

My dad, a man who I will never equal, worked on the TransCanada oil pipeline and the version of this they used to play was to hold the sledge upright, lower the head down to their nose and then raise it again to vertical. Tried it a couple of times when I was in my teens - bloody terrifying to feel the stress in your wrist with the head over your face.

Working at a concrete and asphalt recycling plant ...this is common. Try holding it at the very end ,straight up with arm full extended out in front of youand lowering the hammer to your nose and back.

I saw my grandfather hold the end of the hammer straight out and then slowly lower the heavy end to his nose and return it straight out, when he was about 60. He was an average-sized man and I still have no idea how he was able to do it.

My dad would probably be nuts at this. He's worked construction and welding most his life.

I played that game as a teenager on my junior fire department with a firefighter axe, we'd then lift it and hold it above our nose for as long as possible before having to set it back down. The chief was not happy...

My grandfather an old concrete man used to take a sledge like that and holding it by the end straight out bring the head to his nose and back down. He could hold a charcoal in his hand and not feel the burn due to his callouses and in his 50s do that Russian dance where you squat and kick your legs out. He was incredible and just lookedl like a stocky guy with a beer belly.

I knew a guy back in the Big Bend area of Texas years ago that would grab the 8lb sledge by the very end and then slowly raise it to horizontal shoulder height ,then with his wrist curl it back until he touched his nose with the head ,then slowly set it down. He had the strongest grip I ever saw.
