So I watched this video about an hour ago and decided to go netting on my canal next to the house. Within 45 minutes I caught 3 of these same sirens. Really made my day. Getting them acclimated to my 55 gallon as I'm typing this.

3:48 In Trinidad we call that fish a Coscarob (Blue Acara). They are found in almost all rivers, ponds, and streams here. I caught two using a fishing rod and kept them in an aquarium. They are truly amazing fishes to keep. The first one I caught was extremely skittish and never ate, but warmed up to me and started following me around whenever I was near the tank. The second one was extremely fascinating. Both fishes were silver when I caught them with a single black spot close to their tails, but I noticed that the pattern on them would change to stripes, then return. Most impressive however was that the second Coscarob turn black with deep stripes and started flaring its fins, all of them. He then got super aggressive and kept fighting with the other fishes in the tank. Once he had transitioned to Dark Mode, he never changed back.

I just found your channel and can tell in he first few minutes I’ll love it. I’m a strong believer in leaving natural environments cleaner than how you find them. I also enjoy doing exactly what you are doing up here in Pennsylvania. Been netting fish and critters as long as I can remember. At 3:20 is for sure a blue gill but the next looks to be an invasive maybe a convict cichlids.

So cool to see many wild fish species I grew up catching in ponds and ditches. The Kilifish was one of my faves as they thrive in grassy/algae laid areas. We have a small pond behind our rental loaded with Gambusia, Blue Gill, and Bass. May create a small aqua bowl (self-cycled) and try it with Gambusia or Kilifish from the pond behind us. Thx for sharing and enjoy!!

They also have a lice if freshwater fish and do a lot if talking about the invasive animals in Florida. Lots of turtles and bugs in addition to all the lizards and frogs and they all gotta eat. I bet there is a ton of crossover in the two hobbies. They have done goldfish netting before too :)

That is indeed a Black Acara, I find them mostly in small lakes, ponds, and slow moving creeks. They do have established breeding colonies all over Florida, recognized as an established invasive as far as I know. As usual loving the content and glad to have met you at the Tampa auction.

@FreeRoamFantasy No problem! Hardy fish that has a good bit of personality. I have found them anywhere from penny sized up to about 5-6". Usually along the shores of creeks and ponds. Dense vegetation along the shore is usually where I catch them. You can find a lot of smaller ones in the flooded grasses in the rainy season.

If you're ever in Tampa, I would love to go out collecting! Second thing - what net are you using, looks solid and I'm curious where you bought it. Thanks!

i always clean up the area i am fishing in. i wish more people followed the leave it better then you found it way of thinking. it never fails that i always find fishing line and trash every where i go. strange how people can bring the crap in with them but can never seem able to take it back out with them. when ever i taught kids fishing or outdoorsmenship i always told them never leave anything behind that you brought in and leave the place better by cleaning up what you can and if you could not report it so it can be done. thank you for spreading that message and doing your part

Those plants are native to Florida it's called watershield it's a type of pond lilies. 👍 it's the water hyacinth that's the big problem. Stay safe I really enjoyed video.

When I was a kid we would use a heavy tine take and just throw the rake all the way out and pull all the weeds in and look through them and catch all kinds of fish and turtles crayfish . Works better than the net.

That was quite an adventure. i am inspired to do something similar here. i very nice way of spending a lockdown. No stress. How do you keep your water so clean, do you change it regularly. how regular do you change it and how to you grow wild fish. how do you know what they eat and how they bread etc etc. Great hobby. i bread catfish as a business, but i am inspired by your activity to add ornamental fish. B regards Mulamata
