Crawl Comparo: SCX10.3 Gladiator VS JLU!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Axial SCX10 III Gladiator is quite a machine! But then the SCX10 III JLU kit is something special as well. How do you choose between them if performance matters but you also care about looks? Maybe we can help you out a bit here!
Let's test!
Q. Why are there so many time-lapse bits and no normal filming?
A. I found this footage from back in April that I'd forgotten about! Seemed a shame to not use it given I've made it for you guys and some were asking for it especially! So, here it is - I hope it's handy! In short, the JLU has better performance on my rocks here at least, but the Gladiator keeps up with some added weight.
Gladiator weight and wheel upgrades:
Wheels: INJORA 1.9 Beadlock Wheels
Brass Portal Weights: Generic 48.5g
If you're wondering where the Base Camp fits into all this, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that hefty price doesn't guarantee best performance. Check out our 4-way comparison that includes the Base Camp and all 6 problems here: • 4 Best RTR Crawlers! B...

I tend to go for asthetics 1st, & modify the rig & my driving style to maximum enjoyment. Therefore, it'd be the Gladiator for me.

I like that approach! That's the luxury of it being a hobby rather than it being about a job or survival or safety. Well said!

I bought the jlu kit. It’s box stock chassis and tires for a year now. It keeps up with the trx4 no problem. Only thing I did was losen the shock collars all the way for full droop and put my electronics in it. I’ll have both eventually… after I get other rigs.

@@RCTNT I’ve had no regrets but then again …. I had an idea and was curious… I was curious about the gladiator chassis and I wanted a class one crawler with a licensed body so was going to buy the basecamp and put my jlu body on it… then stretch and convert my jlu to a jt…. But to convert my Jlu to a jt was more than the gladiator itself…. So that scrapped that whole idea. Lol thanks for the content!

Well longer or shorter wheelbase I guess each has its Pro’s & Con’s. After seeing multiple comparisons it looks like overall the Gladiator comes out on top. I can’t say myself because I don’t own one but I have the JLU & the Honcho both of which are upgraded not so much the Honcho but the JLU has many upgrades & wheel extenders to move the wheels out a bit to make it more stable. I have many Crawlers & the JLU has been one of my favorites lately. I just completed a build with a Element Ecto chassis with a Proline 66 Chevy truck cab & Rock Pirates bed & had it out for the first time still smelling like paint. The chassis has many upgrades including Hobbywings 2 in 1 combo & Reefs servo. It’s my first painted custom body & not only did it come out looking great the performance is just off the charts. Both these RC’s though are top level perfumers out of the box & well not perfect have many upgrade parts available to make it very very capable. I’m waiting for the follow up on the Marksmen. Ahh to many RC’s not enough time.

Absolutely! That sounds like a beast, glad you're enjoying yourself! Marksman has been out and there's more footage coming. Gladiator is the better ascender and descender, but it's break over angle sees it do worse on my course than shorter wheelbase rigs because of all my peaky rocks!

I actually wasn't planning on it, as I have my upgraded Bronco on 2.2s with the long arm lift kit already. They'll perform similarly, I'd think - though the Traxxas tires will dominate my hustlers, I'm sure!

  • @Andy_Yates

I thought the shorter wheelbase would have a bigger advantage here. Cool to see it isn't that different. I wonder if the gap will widen when you do the similar mods 🙂. The TRX4 Sport and 2021 Bronco are similar in this way. 313mm vs 323mm wheelbase with similar geometry and setup

  • @RCTNT

For sure the gap was wide when they were both stock. If you look back at my Gladiator Review series you'll see I even included an extra video that was somewhat behind the scenes. I was exploring its capability further as I was surprised at how bad it was, relative to most other rigs at that time. Since then I've tested many more crawlers and now I can clearly tell you it was mainly just that break over angle that hurt the Gladiator. If we put the same mods on the JLU it'll walk all over the Gladiator - except on really steep stuff where break over angle isn't a consideration!

@@RCTNT Yes! I watched that series however long ago it has been and certainly forgot how much it did struggle until you added the mods. How quickly we just remember the good things 😅

I like the quick comparison for a change of pace. If I was choosing I would choose the best performer. I don't know much about crawling, but why would Axial put out so many different models of the same basic crawler?

  • @RCTNT

    @RCTNT

They all do it. TRX4, for example, has even more! Arrma builds fast stuff on the same chassis or same running gear at least, Tamiya recycles very old designs with new bodies (I'm building a cc02 2021 Bronco, for example). Nothing new here! Cheaper to do it and release some minor changes to the body or running gear than to design a whole new vehicle. And many of us buy them anyway, even knowing that. I guess it just makes sense. I don't mind :) And to be fair, the Gladiator performs better on steep ascents and descents. It's the break over angle that really hurts it.

@@RCTNT I've never understood some of the things Tamiya does. Axial's release of the Base Camp was interesting because I think it's a simplified and improved version with a cheap body that seems to perform well. I am an old man I still remember when American car companies had a lot of different cars that were similar and eventually they went away. General Motors used to make Chevies, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs and Cadillacs. They eliminated two lines of their cars because financially it made more sense.

A lot of the excess that was built into things in the past is disappearing as companies look to tighten margins and maximise returns. Efficiency rules - so many road cars look the same these days thanks to wind tunnel optimisation, for example. It flows on to rc, too. Build a range of slightly different models all using the same chassis, running gear, electronics, whatever - Kyosho Fazer, Traxxas Slash/Bandit/Rustler, Arrma 3S, 4S and 6S ranges, MST CFX series, Tamiya every series, the list goes on. The benefit is many amazing and decent value models. The drawback is less variety and less risk in design. Biggest companies can still play around with the idea (think Axial Scx6, Traxxas dragsters, Tamiya Dynahead, and a bunch of specialised one-off models). But on the whole there's less risk in design. I think that's the point I was trying to get to! An afterthought: crony capitalism run amok will be our ruin. I'm not trying to romanticise how things are. Just considering model variety and choice in rc and looking for its roots, etc. Cheers

@@RCTNT I think I should be fair to Tamiya. Their less expensive line of buggies have some very unique bodies. They are always creative in the design of their touring car platforms. They produce the intricate r/c semi trucks, which are extremely complicated. They also produce some iconic cars like the Lunchbox. I don't think any other company has come up with the cars like their comical series. They produce beautiful lexan bodies. So, I was somewhat unfair to Tamiya.

  • @RCTNT

I fully take your point and also didn't see it as negative to tamiya. They do things a certain way and they're reliably good value. Their kits aren't expensive, even the intricate truck stuff. No wonder they're still around! Their whole approach seems to have been to find (make) a niche they're good at then own it.
