Deadbolt vs Base Camp: Performance & Value!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Axial SCX10 II Deadbolt is back with new electronics, updated plastics and new tires. It's also the cheapest 1/10 scale RTR crawler in the Axial stable. Even the SCX10 III Base Camp is $50 more than the Deadbolt.
The Base Camp has some decent running gear and looks better on paper than the Deadbolt, with:
- portal axles
- a better radio transmitter
- arguably better tires
- metal links and shock bodies, and
- licensed bumpers.
But then, the Deadbolt is lightweight and packs the same tough drive train and nearly the same electronics package but for $50 less. Straight axles give it a lower center of gravity, too.
So, which is the better buy? The truth will come out either way on the rocks. Which one crawls better and does the Deadbolt offer worse, equal or better value for money when considering crawling performance? We sure want to find out!
Let's test!

    The value is definitely there on paper. The question is one of performance. At least for the same money spent, we'll look into that next video. Soon after that we'll look into mild upgrades for both and see how well they both do with the minimal common performance upgrades people might do. They're both great starter rigs that can hold their own with other rigs, no doubt.

Knowing what spares to expect and what electronics is important too. Keep up the simple content for those without huge rc budgets. Would there be another shell that fits that isnt the 'racer look' more factory cab?

    Thanks Hadyn, glad you enjoyed it. Most 313mm bodies will fit the Deadbolt and it includes a few body mounting options as well as the default setup. You're generally safe with any crawler to buy a body based on wheelbase and 313mm is the most common (though they vary so it's an idea to check your vehicle before buying a body). But yes, most popular crawler bodies will fit this thing, no worries.

    Nice comparison I always look forward to your input & the test course. You put it through its paces for sure. This just reinforces the simple is good thing. I’ve had RTR’s & did upgrades but in the end did it actually hurt the performance because these simpler crawlers are very good. I have the 1:10 scale Honcho on the SCX 2 platform & stock with plastic links did good. I’ve since replaced the plastic links for metal & upgraded the servo & it just seems to want to go over everything. It’s a super fun truck. It’ll be interesting to see it perform with upgrades. And I can’t see how anybody would prefer the Basecamp body style compared to the Deadbolt. Also any progress with the Marksmen hopefully we get a update. I haven’t had mine out so I’ll definitely get it out I was using it a lot so it’s nice to rest it.

  • @RCTNT

    @RCTNT

    I share your appreciation for simplicity. There's a lot of performance to be unlocked from the deadbolt with minimal changes, while the base camp is already refined in such a way that its great out of the box but limited in how much further you can take it. Got the Marksman out on the trail after an upgrade recently. Haven't finished editing that video yet as I've been worried it isn't interesting enough. Might just publish it as an extra rather than as part of my usual schedule, that way people who want to see it can do so!

    @@RCTNT Well I know on Facebook etc. the Marksmen has a pretty good following. I think it’s plagued with a lack of support by the aftermarket. Most upgrades are cosmetic. Gotta get in the little patches amongst those rocks though, yeah! Setting up a course? You have some epic rocky ground in your area - I was at the 2018 Worlds just out from Perth, that gorge area was amazing. Honestly, just think about having a few sets of different challenges and craft a bit of a trail between them and boom, one crawling course! Add bigger rocks that combine to give multiple 'lines' and you then have some flexibility too. A bit of space, then lots of testing and playing around and you'll find your way forward :)

    I would say the Base Camp is worth the extra money if you plan to ever add a winch. The SLT3 is actually quite good for that with its momentary toggle for the 3rd channel. That being said, the Deadbolt is great for the money and you can do well with $50 for RC crawler upgrades. I agree metal wheels and/or some weight down low would help performance. Then I wonder if a link riser in the back would help with the forward drive when it's wanting to lift the front wheel. I'm curious why go higher turns vs a lower tooth pinion? Maybe this one is already at 11 teeth?

  • @RCTNT

    I like Holmes' approach of 'volt up, gear down' and starting with a higher turn motor when it already feels fast helps keep it reasonable for crawling. You could certainly just drop a tooth on the pinion instead, assuming it has that space to spare (haven't checked yet). Performance wise, my suspicion is the deadbolt will be the better crawler over the base camp if both have similar running gear and upgrades, but I could be wrong! I'm looking forward to finding out!

    Not a pain at all, that's a great question. It's so good I may have to do a video on it because I don't know the answer. Not too long ago I did a comparison between the Base Camp, Ecto, TRX4 Sport and RGT Pioneer. That might give you an indication of the general performance of these things, but it doesn't give a direct comparison between the two you're looking at. Find that 4-way here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqd6zM-vgsSYfcY.html In short, I'd suggest Base Camp for all round use and Sendero for mostly technical crawling. Going with personal preference is also quite acceptable as there's not much between them for performance.

    Man I've been buying axles, frames, motors, tires since Xmas. This is behind 3 other very expensive hobbies. I should have 3 10 scales ready to paint within a month and a half but I'm wondering if Amazon is over charging for the rtr ones. I really want a red cat everest model. I live in Canada and our dollar is weirdly worth a bit more than yours given the friends I have in that part of the worth and sending them stuff and also buying gear from Dave Jones haha. Where is your go to store? I'm not sure if youre speaking in US dollars because our customs tariffs from the US are disgusting to the point where no one I know orders anything from there. A 30usd nozzle for a 3d printer was gonna be 165cad last time I went to order something so I ordered it from the uk instead. Canadian customs are horrible. Friends in the US pay out the ass to ship to me and I pay next to nothing. Anyway rant aside. I have a budget of around 400cad I already have transceivers and batteries. I've come to learn the ali express route is bs due to poor qa and nothing is on-sale all the time like it seems. I just spent almost 5 k on a rigol oscilloscope and I'm sending it back haha. You'd think a company in the scientific community would have decent qa. Dji can do it. Haha. Great channel sorry for the rant

    Ah wow that's pretty rough, eh. I buy a lot of my cars from ebay, new, as in Australia they regularly have sales of between 17% and 22% off. I understand ebay wears half of that and the seller the other half. It results in getting things for prices that simply cannot be matched without the help of eBay taking the hit as they do. Dunno how profitable it is for them but ebay has powered at least half the cars on my channel, maybe more. I have a list of hobby shops I love but my favourite is probably Asiatees. Of course, they're a lot closer to Australia than to North America, so postage isn't as bad to here as I understand it can be to you guys. Cheers

    3 being newer than 2 doesn't automatically make it better, though. Not all changes are performance oriented, and that's why I went into this one without assumptions. I do wonder whether putting the same tires on both might yield a different result, too. I may do that for all 4 1/10 Axial variants I have here (Deadbolt, BC, JLU & SCX10 Pro), that might be interesting!

I just dont personally get excited about a few minor changes, a different body, & a new name. That's just me. It's like modern 1:1 vehicles. They're basically all the same as far as reliability & warranties go, so the only choice is what wrapper do you want on it.

  • @RCTNT

    @RCTNT

    The clicking I'm referring to is definitely the diffs. Been like that since they released the new helical design over the original SCX10 setup, quite some years ago now. I've got enough different rigs here to be able to say there's quite a bit of variation underneath the different bodies and having tried to scratch build various rigs over the years, some chassis, axle and transmission designs are far superior to others. Sure is nice to have the choice, in any case! I'll have to look into the trans manufacturing clearances, I can't recall encountering that. It may very well be the case! Thanks for the tip.
