For RC Crawl Comps: JLU or Gladiator?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The ECCF is Australia's biggest RC rock crawling comp for 2023. East Coast Crawl Fest (or 'the Nationals' as I'd been calling it erroneously before Feb this year) was fast approaching. I was entering 6 of 7 classes and I needed a reliable and capable Scale-1 (or 'C1') comp rig!
My TRX4 hard-body LC80 was getting long in the tooth and I didn't like it's steering limitations.
Our recently-tested RC4WD Gelande II was clearly not even close to being capable.
And while I want those scale points, I realised I didn't have to have a hard-bodied rig.
So... could the answer be the SCX10 III JLU or the slightly longer Gladiator? Today we want to find out which of these is the better choice for scale crawling and after that it's off to NSW for The Big One!
Let's test!

This was filmed at the end of Jan 2023.
ECCF was run and done in the last weekend of March 2023.

It doesn’t matter if these things are technically “toys” you’re always an absolute professional. Enjoyed the video!

Thanks Scott!
I love the body mods you did. Looks good! I hope the JLU performed well for you and I'm looking forward to the breakdown of the event. Take care!

Thanks Chris, it was a great trip and the car performed well. I'll tell all soon! Cheers
I’ve heard the Gladiator was a better climber then the JLU but I have that same JLU & it’s a very good climber even just stock. It’s definitely one of my favorites.

The Gladiator is a great climber as long as the terrain doesn't require a good break over angle. Then the length becomes a liability. In our local mountains, swb 4wds are at a disadvantage for stability on those really steep ascents and descents. Otherwise, swb is awesome off-road. This seems to translate well to rc crawlers too. The JLU is great. Brilliant, even. I'll explain all in the next video but it out-drove everything else in its class at the comp and I was pipped at the post only on points (it was really close). I didn't expect it to be so good but it's just been epic.
They really need a class 0. Some class that has to be hard body full interior has to have full driver's just something that is really true to scale rigs. I feel we keep getting more and more away from the realism. Like weight ratios would be nice also that way you get more of the realistic driving experience. I have the rc4wd land Rover also and I like how it's more realistic and more challenging.

Many local clubs do run something like that, or a class that has to be this or that car only, etc. Adding more classes is a challenge for the extra complexity on the day, time, rules, etc - it's been challenging already to get Scale-1 added to the clubs (C1 equivalent), so C0 may remain a local thing for some time yet! I get you though :)
these look amazing!

Thanks, axial made that part way :)
I will always root for the Gladiator, for its uniqueness, but I think it would really need a bigger tire to make the most of its features. Great (if frustrating) comparison, nonetheless!

I know this video was really only for those truly interested in such a comparison but wanted to give the lead-up to what I did with the JLU. Next video follows soon :)

Thanks, it came up pretty nicely eh! Cheers
The JLU looked very good. Did the weight of the tire in the rear effect its performance?
@RCTNT
Жыл бұрын
It did look good! Went well too. For sure, the rear wheel weight negatively affected it on ledges and similar, but that same weight kept it planted and it drove very well indeed. I'll explain in the next video but you can trust when I say this combo of stock JLU and heavy wheels was a solid pairing. It simply *worked* :)
Do you think it was the longer wheelbase or the longer rear overhang or something else that held the Gladiator back the most?

Breakover angle seems to be the big issue here. Bigger tires obviously help!
What is the size of the tires and what servo horn do you use on JLU?
@RCTNT
Жыл бұрын
4.19" tires - the biggest ones I can use in Scale-1 - and the stock servo horn. I can't recall if you've watched the follow up video to this or not, but go check out the ECCF video debrief I made if you haven't seen it. This vehicle features heavily in the second half of the video.
Hey. I've been binging your videos and you seem like a person who can help me. I made the mistake of buying about 1500 in axles and gear box's and such. I'm struggling with the shell. I don't know what I should do. Buy a new or used 10 scale kit or rtr. Or just build a generic one out of a dust buggy Capra type frame I have ordered. I have huge property to put obstacles and such up. I'm also wondering about the best esc and motor brands to buy.
@RCTNT

If you've just ordered that INJORA buggy kit, you're going to love it. I'm building one now and it's great. Capra axles going under it. I nodded and smiled as I read your comment. I do the exact same thing. Sometimes I've turned all those parts into a silly thing, like the 8x8 EDF enhanced monstrosity I showed 18 months ago on the channel here. Other times the axles, gearboxes, transfer cases etc end up in models I'm modding, etc etc. One thing we can agree on, AliExpress is a menace to your bank account! Re body choice, geez I really don't know what to say there. It very much depends on what you want to build. Having gone through this a few times myself, the best way to get a useful daily driver is to get a kit and just build that and mod as you like. Going full custom can be very satisfying but it is a LOT of work - definitely the hard road. Rewarding if you can break through your adhd to finish it, but yeah, having a vision for the outcome will be helpful. Happy tinkering!

@RC-TNT just to add. I had never really given rc crawling a thought until late last year and I seen a video and I immediately got it. Like the excitement of why it's so cool. I'm sandwiching this in to some other very expensive hobbies haha. I just bought a 5k oscilloscope and other bench gear along with a Japanese ibanez and a pedal board haha. I just got a great digital microscope so I'm going to fix some broken ps5s and vintage consoles to feed my rc hunger lol

Oh nice. I have shiny object syndrome with hobbies myself and many specialised bits of gear just sitting around waiting for me to follow through! RC Crawling in particular is a relaxing and rewarding hobby that happens to include a brilliant social aspect that makes it very attractive. I used to repair hard drives and flash memory storage for data recovery and have all the reflow and iR bits and bobs for electronics. Never got into consoles but I appreciate that having repair and modding skills would probably pay well. Cheers

@RC-TNT my hobby is mostly the theory and math. I've been retired for 6 years and I'm almost 45 and have a software engineering degree. I don't know how you could handle repair to order. I accumulate stuff and fix it and sell it. Haha I could do data recovery for family but that's it. When it's a job it's not fun. I'm a pure Nerd. I read text books constantly for circuit based nodal analysis and 3d stuff for making crappy games. I've made breakout in like 5 languages haha. I thought I was getting a transceiver this week but checked and they refunded me for some reason. Are gyros that important? I've done plcc stuff with industrial mems tech. I'll buy what I can afford and find out. If you answer all my questions there won't be any surprises haha take care and keep ip with the great content
I've done some smart shopping finally and should have 3 10 and hopefully a couple other smaller scale rigs in a few weeks. I'm a self taught electronic engineer with a software engineering degree and I plan on being an rc engineer by the end of summer haha

I mean, I'd swipe right but I'm in a relationship with the MT10 Rival currently. (They're comparable in reputation: tough, fast, good value. I'll get around to checking one out sooner or later. I've got an MT10 Rival video on the channel if you're interested and the new V2 has been released. They're similar, if I understand correctly).
