CRASHING Through Locks and up early to hear the DAWN CHORUS - Narrowboat Life - Episode 145
#Narrowboat #Canal #travel
Crash Bang Wallop What a Video (apologies to Alan Partridge)
In this video we meet one of our narrowboat heroes @CountryHouseGent have to deal with an especially brutal lock causing poor Narrowboat Laura Maisie to crash and bang on her entrance in the lock at Tyrley on the Shropshire Union Canal. Then after all that we get up at the crack of dawn to go and listen to birds singing in the woods. Imagine!

We’ve just returned from a boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads and heard cuckoos in two locations. One morning, on a walk down the banks of the river Chet we heard two cuckoos, one on each bank of the river. Loved the dawn chorus.

I have no forest, that’s certain, but there are numerous bird families who camp in my trees and nest near the pool. I have the 4th generation of a family of doves here this summer and several families of cardinals. Sadly, the mother dove passed away a year and a half ago but last year her first boy brought home a new wife to keep him and dad company. I planted a little over 35 trees several years back after having to remove and destroy 30 pines who succumbed to the dreaded pine beetle who nested in and chewed off their roots. Anyway, I wake each morning to a wonderful bird chorus with many of the same songs you have recorded. The loud one in your chorus is equally as loud in mine. They irritate my daughter (as do most things) but they make me smile. She moved in recently to help me through what came, or maybe to help her. Don’t know but she and her grumbling are heading to Greece and maybe I will learn what the loud bird is before I go. Do you know what it is?

Thank you Rebecca. It must be wonderful to see families of birds returning and to watch your replanted trees growing. I have a feeling the bird you are talking about is a chiff chaff. Does that sound right?
Loved the video, especially the dawn chorus. Thank you.
Love birds 🐦 in the morning.
RE: 25:20, I just have to say how much I envy you two lovely people, the quiet in the forested areas, the birds chirping, the singing of their pretty little tunes. I'd love to visit there and listen to them in person, AHAAA!! Caught ya' in the act, You're a Genuine Card Carrying Tree Hugger!! ROTFL!! Thank you so much for sharing the good times with me, I certainly enjoy it. Do be safe out there and watch out for angry Bears, lol. Cheers!
I work full time nights and I often hear birds singing on my tea break when it's dark in the middle of the night! When I leave work at 6am. they are quite loud.
Just absolutely lovely. Thank you so much!

Cuckoo in Pitsea, Essex about two weeks ago just after 0700. Thanks for the vlogs. As a 70 year, virtually housebound with MS who used to holiday on inland waterways in the 1990s, it's a lovely way to relive wonderful memories. We had a Shetland "Tupperware" boat for 15 years and towed it to lots of places all over UK. We never had a problem sharing locks with "Tin buckets" as we just bounced off the fenders. Really miss the smells, noises and tranquillity.

Hello ! Beautiful things are all around us ,perhaps we just need to look afresh at things we just ignore or take for granted ? I'm 75 years now , thank goodness I can still cycle through my local Forest trails ! Each time I see or hear something interesting ! Just now St Marks fly's are plentiful , dont sting or bite ,just a black fly with trailing legs ,rather clumsy fliers & beautiful to look at if you can get one to stay still enough ! I have been out last week or so to record the Cuckoos call for friends to listen to ,not much success till a couple of days ago whilst recording Blackcaps ! When I re-played my records back there were Cuckoos calling that I never heard at the time because apparently I am becoming 'deaf' to their call tones ! I only have an old 'i pod ',but worked magic for me ! I now have some lovely recordings to share with my friends ! Cuckoos call an important year milestone for me since early childhood ! Norfolk ! Thank you both !

Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you!
Somehow your videos keep getting better and better! You two sitting in the dawn woodland cathedral, listening to the chorus--ending with Rich enjoying a tree hug--was simply wonderful. Glad to hear about the gratis blacking and paint touchup, perhaps their attempt to make up for the leak. I'm surprised by the environmental imbalances we have in common here in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. : the knotweed (which we have finally vanquished from our yard), the year-round Canada geese pooping everywhere, the Ivy climbing and strangling trees, the missing swallows. I love your walks combined with the perspective of the drone footage. Seeing the relation of the canals to the rest of the landscape, rather than simply a shallow ribbon of water, is beautiful.

So glad you are enjoying the videos, I think a lot of these problems are man made, We brought Canada geese here as ornamental birds for the royal parks and many of the plants which are now invasive were brought deliberately, even going back as far as the Romans! We have now seen lots of swallows so that is good and heard a cuckoo this week.
Love the Tulips on top lovely

Each cuckoo is tagged and tracked when they migrate and they have travelled as hundreds of miles over to Morocco....always returning to the same place... xx

Dear Fran and Rich how lovely it was when I logged on and you had posted a vlog, I had been waiting for your next one and you didn't disappoint, this was just lovely everything you talked about was right up my street, from Fran weaving and crafts to the birdsong, and although I have never been on a narrow boat, we used to go on the Norfolk Broads every year, so I am familiar with living on a boat albeit for only two weeks, it's very different to the Broads, there are no locks on the Broads and the bridges are much lower, and although they were originally man made, they are more like rivers, I love the wildlife you see along the way, and the birdsong is wonderful, thanks for your vlogs I really enjoy them 🌞🌞🖐👍
