How can anyone not be completely charmed by you two. Now that David and the two Foxes are landlubberised you are my go-to narrowboat vlog (along with those two sweeties on Holleh the Cafe Beeert).
Ignore those thumbs down. Nobody is forcing them to watch so they just need to move on. I enjoy your adventures

That answer about the shoes in the end, every girl always needs new shoes, that´s since ages...
You wondered why there are so many railroad lines along canals. Personally, I first became aware there is such a thing as a Narrowboat Canal whilst looking out my railroad car window enroute from Scotland to England. Back in London, I asked a travel agent, who gave me a narrowboat magazine. Otherwise I would still be oblivious that there is such a thing! A year later my wife, son and I enjoyed a week narrowboat rental.

That's a lovely story. We on canals are spotting the trains, but for you it was the other way around. We often wave as trains go past so look out for us.
Hello guys!! I'm Lex Townsend. My wife Kerry and I have started selling everything off in sunny South Africa. We should be in the the UK later this year and ARE going be buying a narrowboat. Hope to see you soon!

nice to see the lass changing the engine oils.....well done to her....
Haha, that turn across the Stourport locks is very awkward; and I went into the same trees on that turn up to Droitwich!!

Just a small tip on the oil / filter change : before fitting the new filter run an oily finger around the rubber seal to lightly coat it with oil, it helps to prevent oil leaks as it tightens more easily and effectively.

I just saw this episode and I’m sorry I haven’t found you Guys before now! It would be incredible knowing you two! Two genuine and loving souls! I started binge watching about a week ago now after I saw you guys on CHG’s videos….I’m sure it’s here someplace but the song at 13 minutes is amazing.

Fran changes the oil for the first time - game as well as gorgeous! You've got a good one, there, Rich (as if you didn't know)! A crew of two doing the Tardebigge - and enjoying it - is also quite something! I've been watching your old vlogs ever since you shared the Mersey with the Foxes, now I'm signed up on Patreon. Keep up the good work, as they say.

Thank you so much Mike it is lovely to have you with us and thank you also for helping us through patreon
I think you both did very well changing the engine oil, especially on the first attempt. The only thing I would have advised was to smear a bit of new oil onto the oil filter seal before fitting, this makes a better seal and makes it easier to remove next time you change the filter. Also always run the engine then leave for a couple of minutes, then check the oil level because the new oil filter will fill up with around half a pint.
Well Rich, I finally figured out why there are volunteers at those locks. They are there to gaze at those pretty lady narrowboat skippers. Be careful Fran ya don't leave Rich down in the bottom of some lock whilst the volunteer is eyeing you up. love you guys. I am so at peace watching your vids
Great video
Great job. So enjoyable. I’m very limited on my mobility and so look forward to you vlogs.
Brilliant. Rich, you are a lucky man!! My better half would in no way do an oil change!! Wouldn't even change a light bulb! Japanese demarkation of labour,,,,Just culture, I suppose! We are enjoying binging on past episodes.... Thank you.
Fran quodos on the engine maintenance love it when the girls get involved. I see you driving a lot and Richie working the locks good that you share. You optimism and humour is contagious I love how your embracing the experience and your alway's smiling. Life's all about adventures and the people you meet along the way, good for you. Looking forward to the new installation video. Richie so much for not wanting a fixer upper but so satisfying how your making the boat your own all the best ....Mark & Hedegewick from Cayman islands.

Mark Button thank you for your lovely message. I can’t imagine not being hands on, we both have so much to learn and we’re loving it. As for the boat not being a project, We fell in love with it when we saw it and looking back it’s great to be able to make it OUR boat. We have as much time as it takes and as long as we’re smiling and laughing, all is well. Thank you for watching Fran x

Next time you change the oil, fill the filter 3/4 to full with fresh oil and a bit on the gasket before screw it in place. Helps get the fresh oil to the engine when you first start after the change. I am watching your vlogs where I live in the US, Sedona Arizona to be exact, and I am really enjoying watching your progress, thank you Regards Riley
Just found your channel and I am binge watching. We hired a widebeam a few years back and the engine blew at the weir you showed. Our anchor stopped us and we were towed back to Stourport by a Hull tug boat skipper on a narrow boat holiday! Loved the holiday, despite our mishap and we are looking for our own narrow boat now.
🎶Like a bird on a tree🎶.....I love that song.....and your singing voice, Rich, is AMAZING!

great video & great job swapping the oil & filter Fran :) few tips for oil changes for the future that you may or may not be aware of.. its good practice to lubricate the oil seal on the new oil filter with fresh oil before screwing onto the engine. run your engine after the oil change for a minute or so, check for leaks at this point, you are also filling the new filter with oil by doing this, then switch off, let level settle in sump for a minute or 2 then re-dip oil level & top up accordingly. try and get level up to maximum mark on dipstick preferably as engines do use oil over time :) great videos and its great to see you both so happy with your new adventure! :)

Buzzardgirl13 I’m sorry about that and pleased at the same time. It’s not the life for everyone but we are so glad we made the leap. Life is too short to ponder things for too long and now feels so much more meaningful for us. A simple thing like doing an oil change gives us so much pleasure. Is that sad? I don’t think so Fran x
Laughing out loud! as the trees at 13:30 gobble up the reading glasses. Great bit of filming there, Rich. Loved the views of the canals and wildlife as you go. Very relaxing. TY!
Arrived back at the hire base to early so the crew of 4 went to the bottom of the flight and turned around and came back up !! Well it kept us entertained
Totally fascinated with your life on the canals. Living in Tucson, AZ, USA we have none of this. Love the lushness, water and green. Do you have mosquitoes? Have you ever fallen in? is it mucky?

Hi Kathy. The canals can be quite mucky but fortunately neither of us have fallen right in yet. We certainly do have mosquitos but really only for a month or two and citronella helps keep them away

Really enjoying your videos 👍 going through the back catalogue. Great oil change, something I have learned today.
A very clean oil change, I usually end up covered in the stuff - well done ... and I’m impressed with your ascent of the Tardebigge flight especially given the heat of the day - no longer amateurs, almost seasoned pro’s
Even though you are renting the cottage out there’s no reason you can’t plant a garden on your land there. In your rental agreement you can just say they are not to use the garden or you can say they can use it if they water it. 😂🤣 I live in Nova Scotia , Canada and have never really heard Numpty and love it, the grandkids are going to hear it I think. I have looked after them while my daughter and sil work since they were born so they are like raising another set of kids, they are now 11 and 5 so there are lots of numpty moments. Grandson was trying to explain to me how his “boys” are named at bath time tonight, a numpty moment for sure. Don’t worry about the thumbs down, there are always cranky people, they can just go watch something else or bugger off.
Always laughing which is lovely - keep the vids coming. One small tip is to unscrew the oil filter with a ziplock bag over it ... it prevents spills and once drained can be sealed to hold for disposal.
Just started watching your vlog and am really enjoying it , your banter and even the background music, will hopefully catch up in a month or so then will subscribe, keep them coming and keep on enjoying life on the canal, it's our dream which is unlikely to happen so will enjoy watching others.

I've just subscribed to your channel. You guys are absolutely lovley to watch(!). Greetings from south eastern Norway.
Seeing as we are all giving tips I will add my mekanic one. Never leave the top of an oil filler hole when you have stuff on a shelf above it. One day some little bit will fall and bounce all around until it magically finds said hole and disappears into the bowls of the engine.

Great tip!
Good job, Fran. Some advise. if you don't mind. Put a bit of oil on the filter threads and the rubber gasket. This will help with installation. The oil on the gasket will help it from grabbing and getting a false feel of it being tight. I generally get it as tight as possible by hand but shoot for about 3/4 turn after the gasket makes initial contact.

We love your vids so much! Fran looks like she's got some colour! Still can't wait for the twin tub video (cos I'm pretty dull and sad like that!) If u have a decent inverter like a victron it's actually better to have a 240v fridge as they are actually more efficient than the 12v ones. Saying that, if you've got the fridge cheap, u may as well give it a go! Lewis and Pawel (see you soon!)

The new oil filter is obviously empty before running the engine after an oil change. Run your engine for a couple of minutes to circulate the new oil and fill the filter then switch off and re-check the level. you will find it has dropped so just top up to level.
That was a great oil change Fran! Please please keep the driving goofs on the videos shows how it really happens. To many drive around without goofing up. But i guess that's editting for ya. Thanks rusty
Found your link a while back on David's Cruising the Cut site and have been enjoying your adventures. No comment on the oil change as by know you are both probably experts..... That was quite a day tackling all those locks, even if you did have help, I just wonder if they spelled the name right, instead of Tardebigge should it not be Tired a Bit Locks. Fair locks and clear skies
realy funny vlog :)
Great video, enjoyed the chemistry between the pair of you. The engine maintenance was nice to see that it’s shared , can,t see my wife doing a oil change on our engines somehow. What made you to decide to sell up and have this life style change, I know that you have the cottage but as per your earlier videos , this is to create a income or is it a foot as it were on the housing market. Keep up the video,s great to see the pair of you, Regards Mark. Cromer

rolandpeters1 Hi Mark, thanks for your lovely comment and for watching. The cottage will be rented out as a holiday let as an income for us as we are not yet of pensionable age. We know we could sell up and live off the cash for some years but at the moment a holiday let seems to be the better option for us. We hope once it is set up and running we can just cruise to our hearts content. We feel there is so much to see and do, we don't want to wait until we're too old to enjoy it. Fran x

Hi. Thanks for another lovely vlog. How does the boat handle in a river compared to the canal? Can you feel the current pushing you about? Anyway, keep up the good work guys.
@FloatingOurBoat
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. We were going downstream and was much quicker than the canal. The river was low so guess handling would be much trickier otherwise. Thanks again for watching. 😀
I love your videos especially the chemistry between you & your wife. She’s hilarious, actually both you guys are hilarious. I love getting to just hear the natural sounds of the environment and of course seeing what it’s like to live on a boat. How great it must be to just putter around the countryside nice and slow giving you so much time to really take in the nature, the landscapes, and the beautiful houses. I only have 1 tiny criticism, please please please lose those 2 songs that are played over & over in every one of your videos. Great Zeus they make me envy the deaf. I don’t want to keep muting the video every time the song starts again because I end up missing something you guys have said which is my favourite part, listening to your commentary. Other than that I love your videos and I look forward to seeing every new one you make. I watch the older ones over and over. I just can’t get enough of that beautiful scenery.
Great job on the oil change, I know I’m way behind, just slowly drifting through your wonderful series. What type of engine did your father drive? London metro or steam. Lew Lew yes it's Fran's homemade bread and marmalade too. Someone told us recently that their 240v fridge drained the batteries to death. We have a 1500w inverter. Now look you've started an inverter conversation 😀 Rich x
@lewlew5686
6 жыл бұрын
Floating Our Boat haha we had a 12v fridge and was terrible. Switched to a 240 and was fine New boat builder we're going with doesn't even fit 12v fridges as they're so inefficient and thru know their stuff as they build top boats and are well respected. I guess it depends if your electrical system is up to scratch too though and that could be why others have commented a 240 drains their batts. Some inverters really pull amps just by being on. Haha there will be a riot on here now!
So envious of you two, guess I’ll have to make do with the RV. Stop showing Fran how to do maintenance, or you’ll end up chucked out on the tow path...

Please don't! True, your diesel engine will burn it but the contaminates will cause wear to injectors, pistons and rings. Usually old oil is used as fuel only after it has been refined and filtered to remove the contaminates.
