Episode 32 - We move ever closer into London on our Narrowboat Journey

We lived at Kew Gdns when I was little. This took me back to when I was in London. My aunt & family live at Kensington & I remember Ladbroke tube station, last time I was there was about 25 yo, pre child. I loved it back then, I loved Porterbello markets! It was super back then, funny thing is I NEVER knewthe canals existed back then, I wish I did! It does remind you why you choose another life. You're just being real. It's important for any thinking about it. I loved it, thankyou for sharing 🤗🤗

What a terrific episode! I know I’m behind, but I don’t want to binge because then I’ll run out. 💝 Still a working girl, so I watch when I can. I’m close to retirement and loving your content. Love you showing the old school boat from the 70’s and hearing your relationship to that; love your graphics about the dogs; sad hearing the state of housing and sad to here the state of the Haves and Have-nots; but love your info and interaction with the clean-up volunteers; enjoy it all, even chopping wood, especially your musical selections. Thanks for the respite!! 💖

Hi guys, Nice vlog! We haven't cruised in London for a few years, nice memories, a little more rubbish than I remember. I noticed that you had put your solar panels on stands i this episode. I would suggest you invest in some plastic coated steel cable and a lock and fix it to the stands. This will help ensure your panels don't walk!

Hi Fran and Rich. just a thought when you were putting in the new switch, instead of fighting with electric tape I use shrink wrap tubing while you have the switch off just slip some short lengths on , connect back up slip brown the wrap tubing little heat and bamm . sealed /insulated connection. I was a trucker here in the USA for 12 years on and off and believe me the state of some of the tanker trailer's I had to pull was down right dangerous. you quickly learned to have a small comprehensive kit of spares and tricks up your sleeve.. The homeless people is a poor reflection of the local government. but you have to be careful. Out here we have a lot of people who sit on the side of the road at intersections with the hungry homeless signs . Well I learned from other trucker's how to tell the phoney ones from the real . offer them food the real ones will take it. the others just wanted money. The one's I would give to would be those with dogs. Anyway I digress , as for the candles ,some are or could be quite talented. how about the local government and courts get them to do something tasteful instead of all the crap that is there trade mark. and maybe Cher up some of the depressed area's. And last but not least (and I'll stop ranting) trash ,that is just a show of the type of pig's that live around there. Anyway thanks for the video really enjoying them.

Guess like most big cities you either love or hate them - turning a blind eye helps but sometimes reality kicks in when you see someone sleeping rough - shouldn't happen. There's enough money in this glorious country of ours to fix these problems but its sitting in the hands of those who either don't care or don't care enough.

  • @llessibm

G Henrickson - true, as I know all too well, but you have to start somewhere. We have a distinct lack of social housing, particularly for young single people, and what we do have is poor and not fit for purpose. We have a hostel system that’s deeply flawed and mental heath care that only achieves targets because the targets are set so low. Money isn’t the answer and neither is HS2.

We see homeless person's stash and then empty derelict warehouses... if owners of such buildings didnt just sit on them as investment properties only to be eventually sold off at massive profits for the already rich owners, to be turned into "luxury canalside apartments, starting at 2.8million" .... but instead turned into cheap accomodation for homeless by central government, not local councils. Local councils dont want to do social projects as it attracts low incomes, not high council tax payers. Tax the owners of the derlict properties on the capital gain of value plus a monthly "empty building tax"... to feed and house those citizens without a roof over their head.

Bikes on towpaths (or any path for that matter) are a pet hate of mine. Most riders have a total disregard for pedestrians. I recall that once upon a time, a permit was needed to ride on towpaths - is that still the case? If it is, I wonder how many people actually bother getting one, and if it is actually enforced?

  • @FloatingOurBoat

Hi Simon. There are nor permits required for bikes on towpaths. There are frequent notices asking cyclists to give pedestrians right of way, but unfortunately more and more cyclists seem to think the towpath is for them to race along. There is plenty of room for cyclists pedestrians and fishermen if everyone shows a little consideration and respect.

I used to clean my wood stove chimney (6" dia.) by hanging a chain about the size of the chain with rings you folks use for mooring, down into the chimney and shaking it back and forth and round and round, and this would usually knock off most of the deposits clinging to the chimney. You probably have this sorted by now😁

Only turn the inverter on when you need 240 volts. Even small ones draw 0.5 - 1 amp on idle. Use 12 volt USB chargers instead of 240V. Charge everything when you have the engine running. Is there a diverter valve on the engine coolant/calorifier line? Check it's not stuck in the wrong position, or sticking. Check the thermostat. Don't forget to wear your stab vests/life jackets. ;o) All the best, and good luck.

Thanks for this, you have a great vlog. That bit about the old Shropshire union cruisers rng a bell. We holidayed on exactly the same type of boat in, must have been '87 I think, (not certain, but thereabouts). They were all called after explorers, I forget the name of the one we had, (have boxes of slides at home with the name on) What a wreck it was. The batteries were ready for the knackers yard, and the whole boat smelled of mildew. We did, however, enjoy the holiday. From Norbury up to Chester and along the LLangollen arm to Trevor. 14 days. Would love to have my own boat but it ain't gonna happen, I'm afraid. My wife has advanced COPD and I have blood cancer. We are on Gran Canaria now for the winter and plan to return home,(Mariestad, Sweden) in late March. You are a great couple and I thoroughly enjoy watching your travels. Keep well and look after each other. Anthony McCabe.

Hi Anthony thanks so much for watching and your comment. Yes they were all named after explorers we had Vasco da Gama and Sir Ernest Shackleton before Mom and Dad bought their own from them which we called Threshold. I also have boxes of slides waiting to be dug out. Best wishes to you both and safe journey back to Sweden xx

Hi to you both. If you cut the bolts shorter you will find the end will rust. Also did your hot water problems get worse after cleaning the flue? You may have dislodged some soot down the back of your back boiler which will affect its efficiency. A good thing for cleaning this is a piece of curtain wire. Happy cruising.

Rich just a few things l noticed, why not mount the Solar panels a bit higher and then store the coal bags underneath, you could then also use the weight of the coal bags to hold down the panels in case of any wind gusts during storms etc (even for now a piece of rope from bracket to bracket and a bag on top of rope for a quick fix until you do it properly)and free up/clear up a messy roof space. Also why not simply drill a hole in the side panel of the ignition cluster and mount the new ignition switch there to save you snapping off the key again when you bump it again in the stupid position it is in ? Looked like plenty of area to do it and completely out of the way, also you will be able to gently" fish " the broken key out of the barrel now you have it free and keep as a spare if you want, simply hold upside down and coax out with a bit of thin wire bent paper clip etc or some times you can reach broken key with a pair of tweezers.A good battery monitor will soon let you know where you are as far as charging and drain and what you can do about it in reality, are you sure you have not got a Air Lock in the hot water system?that will cause the same symptoms/problems if you are sure there is no leak. Final bit that was a sticking out like the proverbial to me is, why not put a lip around your hatch lid to stop things sliding off etc while you have it all piled there, like a old Breakfast /Drink tray ? You could even have it with a couple of Cup/Glass/Bottle Holders so you don't have to worry about your cuppa spilling while cruis'n along . Just a few suggestions from the outside looking in ;) That rubbish looked like a third world country disgusting, you can imagine what is going into the canals, someone needs a kick in the arse.On the good side the dogs must have been loving the big parks to run in,it must be a huge adventure for them as well, a new place to explore and sniff out every couple of days, Doggy Heaven.Seeing and hearing all that city BS would have me longing to get far away back to a quiet country cruise for a long time before my next visit, l am afraid l am all over city life now and don't miss it at all. Happy Cruis'n and give the dogs a pat from us ;)

Suggest you invest in a small genny set just to keep things topped up between motoring trips. I bought a cheapo B&Q one and surprisingly it worked well for three years till I sold the boat. I also had had lots of battery powered items to compensate for the charge up ones. Even put an extra 12 volt car battery onboard to run the laptop Sat Nav program, charged by the B&Q genny when running low. I would pop a water sterilizing tablet into the tank each time I topped up, even though like you it was only for washing up crooks and crew!!!!! Never done the canals around London and yes they were built to haul goods from/to the grotty factories and sweat shops of the time. So unless the warehouse's have been turned into Des Reg or swanky offices it's going to be a bit grotty. I used to sometimes drive limo's for the father in law. One day I had a North London customer wanting to catch a train from Euston St. Well I cup through the back end of Kings Cross and St Pancress St's. nipping through goods yards etc. The lady remarked to her daughters school friends. The next time you come to stay we will ask the driver to go the pretty way. As the young ladies alighted the car I chipped in. Next time maybe Madam will book us for a sight seeing tour not a dash to the station.

Hi Fran and Rich. thanks for another excellent peek into your lives. I was shocked to see all of the rubbish, not only in the water, but also by that picnic bench. It's awful. A nasty side effect of living in a big city I suppose although there's rubbish everywhere nowadays. I hope you have a trouble free time in London. It has a bad reputation for trouble for boaters. Take care and safe travels.

Just discovered your video gems after being addicted to certain other "narrowvlogs" .. so doing some catch up binge viewing, as you are doing exactly what we intend to do when we return to UK later this year(19). Love the honest reactions whilst you discover your way through every aspect of life on the cut.... warts and all. Agree with you Fran.. Britain has a litter problem even worse than the 60's & 70's before Keep Britain Tidy did a bit to improve matters. Unfortunately that generation who grew up with an attitude of 'take it home' or 'find a bin' has given way to a lazy, "someone else's job to tidy up after me" pompous attitude. Singapore is a city of the same density as London yet hardly a speck of rubbish to be seen.

So many go on about London house prices like it is the only place in the world with high house prises ,new York, Tokyo,,So not happy with your political spin on things ,were there is success there is wealth .In central park there is a new residential tower were prices make London look cheap .And the difference between rich and poor ,there are people who get on with life and make there own greatness and many who are incapable me included ,but the wealth in houses has changed life's, like yourselfs were you had a holiday home but sold it ,which if I guess right made a difference, if it was worth a lot less would your dream have been the same. The worst thing to happen was thatcher and the tories that sold of council homes which was the safe haven and affordable ability in terms of rent. Many will not be upset with a housing crash were young have got on the market but end up paying a mortgage for a house that is worth massively less .Many go on about second homes ,but when you look at the percentages of second homes it is only 3 percent, and to be fair how many would all play the rich person's life if they had wealth ,many would .so many are just jealous, I see it plenty ,secretly most would want that million pound house .
