"The menacing look of a raging bull blended with the peak performance of 125 thoroughbred racehorses."
Today we're checking out a used 2010 Harley Davidson V-Rod (VROD) Muscle. This was a cycle trader find (not craigslist this time). Join me as a take my first ride ever on a harley v-rod and go over my initial thoughts and impressions on the bike. Stay tuned to see if I end up buying the bike to add it to my personal collection, or if things don't check out. Also, see how the bike stacks up to some of the other muscle/performance cruisers out there: Yamaha Warrior, Honda Magna, VTX 1800, Yamaha V-Max, Valkyrie, and Kawasaki Mean Streak. Enjoy!

I am so glad I did not buy a v-rod in 2015. Took a brand new, left over for a test ride from the dealer. Loved it. Very powerful, smooth and comfortable. The only reason I didn't take it home was the financing, 21%. A week later I bought a brand new F6B. I know 3 people who own the v-rod, they all love it, but mechanical issues. 20k on the Honda, gas and oil changes only cost

The V-Rod is a mean machine. I'm on my second V now, a 2016 Muscle. The design, the Revolution engine and the bike's dark presence put it at the top of my list. BTW, Porsche did not engineer the engine as many will say. Harley hired some of Porsche's engineers onboard to assist in taming the engine down and giving it street manners. The engine originally came from Harley's race bike, the VR1000. Being that it was a full blown race engine, putting down ~190-200hp, it was not made for the street and; therefore, would've torn itself apart. This 1250cc Revolution is rated at 125 crank hp. In the spring of '17, I tore mine down and put a Stage 1 kit in it (Vance & Hines Competition pipes, K&N filter, topless airbox and a DynoJet Race Tuner). It now puts 120hp to the ground. A good bump in power for ~$1,000.

Thanks a bunch for the info! I always heard Porsche engineered it, but you point out an important distinction there. Lol. I just did my first "subscriber shout out" vid a few days back. I invited subs to send in pics of their bikes, along with a short summary of any mods, and why they like the bike. If you feel so inclined, I'd love to spotlight the vrod as part of the next group. No pressure of course. Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!

I just sold my 2014 VRod Muscle... good decision not to purchase this one in my opinion as there should be no weird noises, no knocks, no leaks anywhere. They are finely tuned machines and if maintained properly will be relatively problem free and last forever. Seriously, Porshe doesn't mess around. I loved mine.. identical to the one in the video. It was more comfortable than it looks. Went on many long day trips 300-400 miles no problem... and I have a bad back. I did have a customer seat - Corbin. I also own a 2005 VTX 1800. The VRod is faster, smoother and handles way better. My only two complaints are fuel sensor/fuel gauge issues which are very common with these bikes and the biggie is that I wanted more comfort, more storage and more protection (a fairing) for long rides. I'm closer to 60 years old than 50 if that gives you an idea of where I'm coming from! Other than that if you are looking for a badass bike that is going to be a head turner, and be near the top of the food chain for speed I highly recommend owning one. Safe riding to all!

The oil leak is more than likely coming from the air box breather hoses. They get old and cracked and then start to leak. The oil then runs down the rocker cover and then pools behind the cylinder. I had it happen on my ‘06 Street Rod. Once I replaced the hoses it wasn’t an issue anymore. I do agree with your comments about the mid controls. My Street Rod has them and it’s great. ‘06 and ‘07 unfortunately were the only years for the Street Rod but it was also the first model for the inverted forks, Brembo brakes and 5 gallon fuel tank. The VRSCD model also came with mid controls. You can put mids from a D on other models but from what I hear it’s pretty involved.

The airbox / breather hose are quite tricky to put on right, if you mess it up you get oil everywhere. The oil issue could be an easy fix. However, using wire to hold on the radiator cover is a red flag. I agree with you to pass on this one.

Hi John I got myself a v-rod muscle a year ago and i have no regrets about it, that was my dream bike and my friends with there street bikes didn't believe that there's a Harley Davidson v-rod keeping up with them on the straight line and in corners even if there bikes were modified there was a 1800 he couldn't keep up with us not even in the straight lines he was wondering if i was not afraid of flying off due to my feather weight the fact that am just about 70 kg . It's fun to ride and it got a lot of juice from the bottom to the top i not too long ago given it a custom paint job added a screaming eagle black box with a van Hines competition exhaust it's louder and faster than many other harleys just loving it

Let's face it!!! This bike is the John Snow of Motorcycles!! It's the Illegitimate Love child of the American Classic Harley, and the sexy, German, High performance race monster. I've had a V-Rod Muscle for a couple of years now, and damn, this bike is so fun!! It brings a certain attitude with it! I feel unique when i ride it, mostly cause i can keep up with, and pass several types of sports bikes, and most old timer Harley enthusiasts HATE it! This is perfect cause i come from a sports bike background, and im just a little younger than the average Harley rider. I march to my own beat, and don't feel like a complete sell out moving to the Harley brand, which i absolutely LOVE!

I have ridden the V-Rod muscle for a few years now and love it! Performance wise its an incredible machine! Having ridden sports bikes most of my life! over 40 years riding! It is a great cruiser with a lot of power that a bigger sports bike also has! certainly not lacking in power! in any way shape or form! I have owned a Honda Fireblade! A Suzuki Gsxr 1100, A Yamaha Exups, 1000cc 145bhp which was the predecessor to the R1, also a Kawasaki Ninja 900cc the last model before the Kawasaki z1000! The V-Rod is fast! very fast! Handles great! has a lot of modern technology and is advanced for its time! Love it! not getting rid of mine anytime soon! Love your videos! thanks for this review! but I feel it was not true to the nature of this motorcycle at this time! :). would love to see another review when you buy one!

if you see a lot of oil on the top of the rear cylinder and thinks its leaking from seals and or gaskets, double check to make sure it wasn't just over filled or excess oil coming from the vent tube. its easy to see if the bike has been over heated and the oil comes from the air box and down. I’ve got an 09 muscle and an 05 R1. The v rod isn’t sports bike fast but it pulls hard and is quick for a cruiser. I rode a warrior 1700 as I thought about one of those before buying my v rod. The warrior is an awesome bike but the v rod is a faster bike. The v rod in stock form is capable of 11 second quarter mike times. The rider is usually a limiting factor so it’s definitely no slouch. Plenty of great muscle bikes out there. The Indian scout bobber is also another gorgeous bike that’s pretty quick. The Yamaha raider is also a great one. Can’t go wrong with any of those options but as a v rod owner, I must say it is a great bike. I mounted both tires myself and just changed the plugs. All work done in my garage so it’s not terribly difficult to work on. I also updated the fuel sending unit in the tank. Whatever you ride be safe and enjoy the ride!

Yeah, all these years I've just imagined the warrior was one of the baddest "muscle bikes" out there. After doing a tiny bit of research, it became evident that I was missing out on some wild rides. Fortunately I take it pretty easy anyway, but it's always good to open up the mind and explore alternatives! You don't happen to have a how-to video on how to mount/dismount motorcycle tires, do you? That'd be awesome! I'm burning rubber fast on my dyna (learning wheelies), and that would save me lots of dinero. (I suppose I could do a youtube search as well. lol.) Thanks again!

I’m with you man. I couldn’t do yellow either lol. As far as the tire changes, on my R1 and the v rod front tire, I used the zip tie method to change all 3 of those tires as they aren’t super wide. You can look it up on KZread. For the v rod rear tire I went with a 260mm so had to use regular tire spoons and patience since it’s a wide tire. All in all not too terrible of a job. Save yourself a lot of money and do it yourself if you can. As far as the warrior 1700, I like those bikes a lot. They definitely have some power as well. The v max performance is hard to beat in the cruiser world from what I’ve heard along with the triumph rocket 3. Both bikes I hear are very powerful but in my opinion they’re so ugly lol.

The Vrod revs to 9000rpm's and has it's torque up high so it's gonna pull hard all the way to redline and therefore will out accelerate the other bikes in that article (minus the Vmax). The Vrod's engine is built like a sport bike whereas the other bikes in that article (minus the Vmax) are really just big bore long stroke cruiser engines (low down torque, low rpm revving engines). Harley Davidson did a good job with the Vrod, but you got to keep the revs up to get the power. Most cruiser riders want low end torque.

$6,500 looks like a good price if you wanted to repair the leaks. The local dealer has a 2017 Muscle just like that one but he’s asking $13,500. It only has 1,200 miles on it though. I’m mulling over buying it. Could get an extended warranty from HD. I really enjoy your videos. You test ride many bikes that I’m interested in. Besides, we’re both the same size physically. How a particular bike fits a 6’+ person doesn’t interest me. 😂. How did the Muscle fit? Aftermarket risers are available. I couldn’t ride a stock setup very far. On the plus side, the vrod is one of the few Harley’s with dual front brakes, inverted forks, and the only Harley with radial tires. The Warrior had all of that but, as you know, Yamaha cancelled a great bike.

I guess it would depend on your definition of "gnarly"? The VRod is faster than both the Warrior 1700 and the VTX 1800F. To be frank, the only V-Twin built at the moment capable of outrunning a VRod is a Suzuki M109R.

I completely forgot about the m109r when doing this vid (I've ridden one but it was a long time back). If you watch to the end of the vid, you'll see that I reviewed an article where they compared a handful the "performance cruisers." The vrod out ranked the warrior and vtx 1800. So, yes, I recant my statement. Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting! Ride safe!

@@JonsMotoGarage Hey man, didn't mean to make it sound like I was being critical. Just was wanting to clarify your perspective of "gnarly". It can mean so many things. lol I love my VTX 1800. While not faster than a VRod, or M109R, it'll still put a Warrior and many other cruisers in its rear view mirror. As far as attitude goes...I've always found the VTX's looks to be a lot more sedate than most. It doesn't look nearly as fast as it is...while other bikes look faster than they really are. All about perspective, I guess? I'll give the gnarly nod as a whole, to the Victory line up. Many are critical of the now defunct brand, but Victory was never afraid to take chances when it came to styling. Bikes like the Vegas Jackpot and Hammer 8 ball are some of the best looking attitude cruisers to roll off the showroom floor, IMO.

They discontinued the Vrods and rockers to put out that new FXDR shitbox thinkin it will take their place,...it wont.,...if you want an FXDR wait two years and get one for $7,00 after they are discontinued. That oil leak is prob the airbox not seated in the valve correctly,..it easy to get that wrong when you take it off to get to the battery,..big pain in the ass on these. There are some other cruisers that are cool but in time they are disposable in the end and they have no real style to them,...these are more then enough power and torque for anyone,...Do people really want to fuckin kill themselves on their bike?,...you better respect the power of any bike. People need to realize that these are the best motorcycle for the money if this is the type of bike your lookin at,.....With something new like the FXDR lets look at it,...After finance charges and interest at least $$25,000,..Reg and title plus taxes on $20 plus grand,..a fuck load,...then FULL coverage insurance$$$$$$$$ then at least $4,000 of after market to be able to look at without cringing. I had to dip into savings before letting the V-Rod get away. Thankfully, was able to get a buyer for the Victory the next day. So, I basically upgraded from an old Victory with bad paint, no front brake, no turn signals, worn out back tire, no horn and fuel leak to an 04 V-Rod with 29k miles, near perfect cosmetic condition, with a bunch of extra stuff (fairings, exhaust, bike cover, trickle charger, service and parts manual) for only a $2400 difference.

@@JonsMotoGarage Jon, oil on the backside of the engine is a mis-attached breather hose between the air-oil separator in the airbox and the fitting on the top of the rear cylinder's camshaft cover. This hose also is prone toward cracking, which will puke oil all over the backside of the engine. Also, for future reference, all Revolution engines have that characteristic "whine" at idle - it's the balance shaft drive gear, which is straight cut. The radiator shield tie-wrap is a fix for a busted locator pin cast into the plastic - a common break item when removing the shield. The repair manual warns against this. Unfortunately, all the painted plastic on this bike is $$$$$ and takes a while to order from the factory. I love my Muscle and it's been fantastically reliable. You really need to experience one wide open.

You bring up some great points. It's definitely hard to justify spending so much on a harley when you get way more with a metric cruiser. I wonder if the new club scene is making any impact at all. I imagine it's a very small subset of harley riders who are actually into it (myself included). Thanks for watching and commenting!
