Cozy Log Home DIY: Episode 5 - Excavating Power Conduit with Our Expert Electrician
Ойын-сауық
Dive into another key phase of our Cozy Log Home DIY series! In Episode 5, we take on the task of laying the electrical groundwork for our cabin. Using a Caterpillar 303 mini excavator equipped with a 12-inch bucket, we carefully carve out tidy trenches for a power conduit essential for our 400 amp power service. This episode not only advances our construction but also introduces you to a crucial figure in our project-our expert electrician.
Watch as he shares critical electrical insights that are vital for a safe and efficient power setup. His professional advice coupled with our precision excavation shows just how much meticulous planning goes into a self-sustained home. I also emphasize the importance of cleanliness during the build process, ensuring our site remains pristine and organized.

@@MrMarsik13 Imagine thinking anything on this channel is not 100% serious at all times. You are not going to survive the struggle with that attitude sir.
My father was a commercial union electrician in Canada. I used to work there as well. If I didn't clean up after myself, I would be handed the keys to the building and a push broom on my weekend and told to go clean the entire floor we were working on. Also, if I marked a wall while installing anything, he would have me go to the painter and borrow a roller and paint and fix it. I used to think how hard he was on me was unnecessary. Now, as a man, my work always stands out from the rest. I'm happy he instilled a work ethic in me at a young age.
You do excellent work, Cody. Using two 22.5s instead of one 45 elbow is a trick that my dad taught me back in the 80s. He was a fire sprinkler fitter for 30 years. I drove dump truck for a few years, and too often I received vague info on where to dump a load of rock, so nice job, sir. 👍 A job superintendent once jokingly told me, if you're ever lost in the woods, just pound a stake in the ground and a dump truck will show up to run it over. Cheers.

Thank you, Levi. I have been reading the comments. Lot of guys have been asking for longer videos with more detail,
I'm an electrical contractor and you are 100% correct. I have to drill into the men to clean up and they do think they are too good to clean. I even had a man tell me he does not sweep. If you don't sweep, go home. He swept up. Do a good cleanup and they will always will call you back.

Worked excavation for a while and I live in the northwest, would always get complaints from electricians that our power trench depth would be short by like 2 inches or so (roughly 24 to 28 inches required) yet I’ve seen countless times when a rain comes down the night before completely filling the trench with water so they just install the pipe right above the water level making it even less then a foot below ground simply because they didn’t want to get dirty pumping out the water from the trench. Then when final inspection comes it would fail because they didn’t install it to proper depth. 🤦♂️

As a certified forklift driver I can tell you that watching excavators is just awesome.
If you put a Klein Tools sticker on a broom you can get a sparky to use it. Need another sticker for the dust pan or he’ll just leave the piles everywhere

Love how you treat your wife, you always have good energy in your videos. It’s crazy how much experience you have in everything you do. Really liking this segment!!!!
My man cody 20 years in the excavating business, plus EMS, wildland firefighter, multiple automotive businesses, roofer, framer, lumberjack, construction superintendent... Im sure im missing some. You've lived the lives of many men, and still young!
Glad to see you shared your expectations of cleanup with your electrician. Setting people up to do a good job is a lost art.
Missed these old type of videos. Been watching you now for years. Please more of these old school videos!
Cody, you are brilliant! I’m going to do the same thing for my wife this weekend. The declarative way or “ordering” her to do something for herself is perfect. Thank you.
I love doing electrical work, it's so simple if you know what you're doing and are safe about it. That's a very clean setup and the trench was well-cut.

The ways the excavation “sop” if you will varies around the country are cool. Goes to show just cause “it’s the way we’ve always done it” doesn’t mean someone else doesn’t know better
I've worked with your electrician many, many times. Back when i worked for A&E.
The comment about the stake goes for any time you have materials delivered. Part of my job is working with our delivery driver at a lumber yard. Having a customer tell us they put a flag or something down when I call and ask about where to drop materials saves us so much time.
Loving the series. Keep em coming. Thx again wranglerstar and family
Really enjoying this style of episode. I'm starting construction of two wings on my house, and I'm going to do an "off the house" meter like you're doing. I'm leaning a lot. Thanks for letting us share in the adventure that is Cody & Family. :)
Thanks for taking us along, Beloved.
Good stuff. Nice to be outside and not freezing. Now we east coast guys just need it to stop raining. The struggle is real for the first time for me regarding water.
What you are saying is true about electricians. I once was saw an electrical foreman do the final connections and then drop his tools on the ground and tell his laborers to clean everything up as he walked away.
Awesome series! Feels like old wranglerstar. Blessings from the Uk! Awesome to see not everyone is stuck in the dystopia! 💪

I’ve just been calling those “long shovels” for the past few years lol. Glad to know the original purpose and name. I used one that my grandpa had to remove some bushes at my mother’s that broke 2 regular shovels. Got nice and deep into the roots and made the job go by much quicker!

Great work good sir!!!
Awesome!!
Good control over the bucket. I’m sorry for telling a story during your video. Please forgive me. My wife’s stepfather used to run a big excavator for the city. One day a guy was in a deep trench, and it caved in on him, completely covering him a yard or two deep. Frank used his excavator to exactly dig down to the top of the man’s head, then hand dug. The city awarded him a lifesaving award. He was very proud of that, for the rest of his life. We, also, were proud of his expertise. Sorry for misdirecting your video for a second.
I like the Camarata reference
Good evening from the Ozarks ☦️
Nice panel, 400, that's the way.
Ole skool Wranglerstar video there buddy....great construction tips. One word of advice, if you decide to again "ground" yourself on a construction site you might want to borrow some stainless steel toenail polish from your Tradcon to provide your tootsies a little safety margin should you drop a piece of conduit on them!

I never knew grounding was a thing until seeing you exercise it, then recently Dr. Peter Attia had a foot specialist on his podcast and she talked about how important it is for foot health to go barefoot for some time during the day !
Awesome!
Nice!
Had an MSHA inspector tell me he looks for messes around panels (old tape rolls, wire clippings, etc.) and those are what he takes a deeper look at (and usually finds a fine.) I've been diligent about tidiness ever since.
I'm guessing your estate (if ever it goes on sale) will be valued at a significant premium, since so much of the construction is documented, while conducted at such a high standard of quality.
Evening from PA
When I was an apprentice electrician the only thing I remember actually cleaning up was extra wire. Had no concept of a broom for the nips and paper :)
Schedule 80 should be installed where ever the run transitions in/out of the ground, then change over to a 10’ stick of galvi going up the pole with a bonding bushing to a ground rod. But don’t worry about that as long as you have a plan to clean up wire snips
The cabin is just the right distance from the road where pitching water balloons at it will be a snap.
Cold start!
excellent
Ran this same exact mini all day today. Coke start and all
The company I work for has a 303.5 just like yours it doesn't have the extra counter weight it makes the machine feel tippy it doesn't have the stability of the older models with the extra counter weight. I spent 7 years on Kubota minis I do like them they are fast, I'm used to operating a fast reacting mini.
Is the mountain real? Looks amazing.
Did I misunderstand? You're putting in a 400 amp service for a small log cabin? I have enjoyed your professional home owner content for years and years, thank you.
Never heard of East Coast man with a Man Servant.
I have found the old car septic system working as a foundation builder in Connecticut. It was a 1950s car. Pretty nasty but cool.
Yeeesss lol we always tell the members please get that service buried in pipe 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 So unfortunate to have to locate your bad wire when you’re missing a leg at 2am 😵💫😮💨

Progress it’s a wonderful thing. I’m curious how much for the permits from your local know it alls?
its kind of amazing what only the 24 or so horsepower can do on that excavator
Every one in my family took on the trade of being a electrician i was taught by my father you clean up your mess cause if i got to come behind you you are fired a clean and neat job site is more business in the future
White on rice😂 is that a Major Payne reference? Also, them sparkies always leave messes
Do you use different color conduit for different services in the US? Here in New Zealand (and Australia), typically we use Orange for electrical, Green for Telecommunications, Blue for water, Grey/White/Beige for sewer or rain water, Yellow for gas.
Nice 💯🇺🇸
Apple could learn a thing of two from CATs example. A huge part of what makes them so good is CATs parts network that come from the OEM. Could you imagine Tech companies doing anything like that?
Did you say 400 amp service for a little cabin? I'm just wondering what secret device you got needing that kind of juice lol. You would need to load up on the ecoflows for sure. Nice work Cody God bless you and your family.
Are your solor panels on that pole? Or are you going to let the man control your power? Central Texas man asking
I just opened the cover to my breaker box yesterday on my 5th wheel to pull some voltage readings and low and behold, wire sheathing clippings and all sorts of mess from the install and termination and stripping of wires. Figures.
In my area cat has a bit of bad rep. To get parts, it could take from a week to a month.
