Coyotes Laughing in the Night

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Cool Shirts teespring.com/stores/timberbi...
I had scarcely placed my head upon my pillow, when suddenly out of the black of night, coyotes began to laugh from within the forest nearby. It began as quite a domestic sound, but as their conversation continued, their howls intensified to a more sinister tone. They cackled and cried as the pack ran swiftly through the woods along which I was camped. I was unsure if they were tormenting a meal beneath the hunter's moon, or if they were simply engaged in playful canine antics. The sound was thrilling and also slightly chilling.

I know right it's horrifying, I sleep outside in the backyard with a tent up sometimes and when I hear the laugh I'm always wanting to rush inside so I don't die either that or I go completely still and stop breathing or hide in my sleeping bag and stay still barely breathing. And that's why I'm scared of the dark in the night outside. Edit; And being terrified of sleeping in case I get attacked or something. The laugh gives me chills.

I had a similar experience today with my dog off leash next me to me at a large 60 acre park. At first they were distant, I couldn’t find any large sticks or rocks as it was getting dark so I started jogging in the direction of my car with my dog and they began running in our direction. I could tell they were closing the distance quickly as I could hear their devilish laughter getting louder and louder, so I began a flat out sprint. Im a very fast runner and large so I was making a ton of noise running on the gravel but they were undeterred and were still closing; I had to estimate them being less than 100 yards away. I stopped running when I got near the less “natural” side of the park with playgrounds and open fields for sports. They stopped chasing when I started walking but their shrill, cackling persisted. This is something I will never forget for the rest of my life.

So few sound like so many. We have a pack around here that gets brave and likes to rush the cows, taking their chances with the donkeys. They are always beat into submission and go away yelping. It is actually quite sad for the coyotes. The cows are likely grazing on what was once their home. Urbanization is making victims of them.

I live in Seattle and there are surprisingly a lot coyotes that are able to survive within the city and in the suburbs. Mostly the suburbs but there were a family of them that came around my neighborhood last summer. It was one of the hottest summers in Seattle and broke records so I ended up leaving water out for them to drink from and left some treats since they didn't look too healthy (I know you aren't supposed to feed wild animals but seeing what is basically a group of wild dogs dehydrated and hot gained my empathy). Well one of the coyotes ended up mauling one of the neighbors pomeranian and I never saw the coyotes ever again. They were probably poisoned or maybe they just moved on.

I believe when you hear more frantic yelping/cackling than that, it is sort of a celebratory call after the killing of prey. Our housing development is in unincorporated South Orange County, CA amid rural environs with lots of coyotes living in the wooded hills and fruit orchards that have been deemed ‘Wildlife Preservation Areas’, with coyotes considered protected species that cannot be killed, harmed or harassed. The coyotes have gotten used to their semi-urban surroundings and even during the daylight hours walking through the neighborhoods and paved trails, I’ve seen coyotes walking or trotting down residential streets and the dirt trails that are part of the community. During evening walks, I have suddenly heard nearby coyote celebratory yelping in the hills at the end of the block, or the next street over, or the nearby sports center that backs up to rolling hills, and at times it had gotten a bit scary. Unless you are in a region that is considered to fall under control of the Bureau of Land Management and outside of city limits, you are not allowed ‘open carry’, so wearing my 9mm holstered and lanyard-secured when walking in ‘coyote country’ is not an option. A 4” (or less blade length) pocket knife or can of dog/bear spray would be your only legal option to defend yourself against an attack by a pack of aggressive coyotes (which had been reported as happening with fatal results in some states).

Not a joke In PA I just last night walked on a road that had no lightings in a football field’s radius As I was walking by the tall field of grass on the long empty road at 3 am, I see the tall grass start moving and hear little laughs like these ones. I could sense it was not something smaller like a fox - because it had been following me rather than running away in the grass. I then had to yell at it to go away but it kept coming back. When it came back I then just ran I am convinced it was a coyote, if not a pack of them. I was lucky enough I had my gat carrying on me, but it still was scary shit cause if I had gotten attacked by a pack my 8 rounder wouldnt have been enough....

@Great White foxes arent in packs tho. and coyotes are all over the united states. i did a 2 month road trip across the united states and heard them every where. oddly tho, they were present in death valley but didnt make any sounds. that place is eerily quiet

Cynthia Duprey I'm sure it is coyotes. it's very common for them to live in urban environments. They easily adapt. a documentary I watched said they are growing in population and adapt to any environment. crazy. I live in a suburbs type place and they are all around. I am always with my two little dogs when they go outside. I Live in the desert and grew up around here and so have lived with coyotes in and around this whole area. You hardly ever see them but once in a while, one goes trotting down the street in plain view. My husband has tried to scare off a few and they just look at you like 'whatever'.....

YOOO i hear this every fucking night. there have been sightings of coyotes around the area i live in so i was kinda already trailing towards the fact these were coyotes laughing. its so weird omg. at first i thought there were children kept in a house nearby and were being beaten so they screamed like that?? idk i think i was paranoid. thank god its only coyotes.

Emily Guenther oh, Gods above, what a profound revelation! I can finally sleep knowing the precise description of the sounds these creatures were emitting! How about doing a little review of literary devices - laughing is a perfectly valid description of the wide ranging voices that these animals are capable of.

They are absolutely known to hunt in groups. “Packs” are rare, but they regularly hunt as pairs. This is indeed coyote vocals.
