I love the foreshadowing of the birds flying off as the jets fly over. It tells us birds are in the operating area but we don’t realize it until Phinoex and Bob get hit because we were so focused on Coyote. Perfect example on on how to build tension in a movie.

Even with that, superhero movies could be done better, as evident in the past. It's such a mistake working on 5 superhero movies at the same time, having the same lessons, same tone...it stifles creativity. Every kind of storyteller/studio needs a hand in telling those stories, not just Disney shit which isn't everyone's cup of tea.

What I love about this scene is that once Coyote recovers, we're lured into a false sense that everything is okay. That is immediately stripped away once the bird strike comes, and the sense of worry comes back, and it's even stronger Also mad props to Lewis Pullman and Monica Barbaro for knocking this scene out of the park. They really do a great job convincing you they're about to crash and are running out of time and options

He told him to level out and he persevered, putting himself in this situation and, rather than him being mad that he didn't listen to his command and being pissed that he nearly killed himself, he's just glad his comrade came out of the situation okay. Not just screaming to get him out of it. He goes and matches his flight trajectory so he can get a missile lock on him, hoping that his cockpit's missile lock warning will help wake him up. It's incredibly clever, and while it seems obvious looking back at it through this clip... it's not immediately obvious to the non-military crowd watching the movie at the time. Super clever technique.

The dogfight scene is badass, but that engine fire scene was so stupid! These people are top gun pilots, they wouldnt panic on a bird strike and go make stupid mistakes. When you lose an engine wind your watch don’t go full throttle and start climbing!!!

  • @ElDuderino999

    Жыл бұрын

@@RyanTabes You Sir don’t seem to have the slightest clue about emergency fighter jet procedure in low altitude. The F/A-18, once thrust and hydraulics are gone, is literally a flying brick. 16-30 tons of mass held in the air by a tiny wingspan of just 45 feet, thus the minimum takeoff (or airborne) velocity of 200 mph. The first and foremost priority in case of engine failure at low altitude is CLIMBING as long as there is thrust to climb and hydraulics to steer (to enable the ejectors to work even in rolling or upside-down flight). The scene is portrayed spot-on, as survival of the crew is the most important aspect. Saving the plane is considered a honorable bonus. Edit: Yes, in hindsight Phoenix ‘could’ have taken the time to let Maverick take an eye on the jet (you see how he’s just a moment short of warning her NOT to crank due to the engine’s visibly catastrophic condition). Put aside, it was going to fail anyway in a matter of seconds rendering the hydraulics useless in the process. So, there’s NOTHING that could save a jet fighter with dual engine failure. Eject, survive and suck it up.

The magic of practical effects, right? How are you gonna get such authentic intensity if they're just sitting in some model of a cockpit with green screens all around...? But if these guys are actually flying/being flown around, dealing with the unfamiliar stress of that experience, it adds this level of verisimilitude to these scenes that you feel in every fiber of your mirror neurons...you feel their stress because the actors are both acting it and living it. Goddamn, Hollywood--this is how you make movies that make money. Remember making money? Get back to that and leave all your bullshit box-tickery, social-media, politics-all-day, message bullshit for the private lives of actors still foolish enough to engage in it and cripple their own popularity. I mean, 15 years ago we were all saying how nuts Tom Cruise was with the Scientology thing, but now--I swear to god he's the Last Movie Star, the last guy whose name alone can get a movie made and get fans to see it. His religion is kooky, but the nu-religion the rest of Hollywood has adopted is kookier as well as supremely socially destructive, malignant, and far more interfering. Cruise converted all his critics partly by looking good in comparison as the rest of Tinseltown went ACTUALLY fucking crazy...

The reason why is because they actually filmed most of the scenes in real (benign) dogfights against other Navy pilots. There is simply no way to weasle your way out of it by using CGI or props. The facial distortion and panting in High-G maneuvers, the flinging around of the weapons officer / spotter in the backseat in tight and unpredictable change of direction… in essence: the general sensation of being in a f*cking combat aircraft (let alone the ‘monster’ of a F/A-18 Super Hornet) for real CANNOT BE REPLACED by CGI or any level of pretend acting skill - it has to be done in the gool ol’ practical way. Hats off to Tom Cruise for pulling through!

Amazing on true, real-time technology changes and advances - the ejection seat 2 handles used to be above the pilot in the headrest of the aviator's seat, but then they found out that in some cases the G-Forces were so great during an emergency that they could not reach up to grab and pull the 2 handles to eject and plus you could not see the handles because they were up and behind the aviator so they were reaching and grabbing blindly, so for better safety, utility, ergonomics, they moved the ejection handle to the floor of the plane or the base of the seat and made it one big loop handle for easier access and you could just pull it with one hand if your upper body, torso, arms, or either hand injured you could stick your wrist, forearm, elbow joint, arm/bicep, or even your foot or leg into the loop and pull it for ejection.

The seat I flew on (Martin Baker Mk4) had both headrest and lower (seat pan mounted) handles. The procedure was that if time permitted it was preferable to use the overhead handle but that if the situation required an immediate ejection then the lower handle could be used for speed.

I'll have to watch the scene again, but I thought in the ejection scene in 'Flight of the Intruder' the A6 had them between the pilot's knees and that movie was set during the Vietnam War back in the 60s and 70s. Maybe when the F-14 was designed, it was changed for that cockpit as was evidence in the '86 Top Gun? With the original legacy hornets, they're actually rated for 9g. The Swiss Air Force flew them as 9g capable aircraft. The US Navy would set it at 7.5 g to extend the durability of the aircraft, but also to lower incidents of g-loc. The viper (f16) is rated for 9 g. But it has a seat with a more significant recline than the hornet so it's thought you can sustain more G being more reclined. With the design of the super hornet they absolutely could have Incorporated 9g as a standard operation because of improved design and wouldn't require as much maintenance as legacy hornets, but there still would have been the need for more frequent inspections than the lower G rating. And you would still be dealing with increased chance of g-loc at the higher G rating. Generally because you need the visibility to land on the boat, the more reclined style seat like in the viper is not really an option for a super hornet. And you do have the override switch for the G limiter on the super hornet so you can pull 9g if you need to

Imagine a scene of aircraft mechanics constantly DIY-ing a bended airframe of an F-18 after Maverick's abusive habits to the plane lol

IRL fighter pilots are a lot more willing to push their planes beyond accepted G limits, especially if it allows them to do the funny on somebody Also the human body can withstand a surprising amount of G for short periods of time, some have pulled over 12G in combat situations like Desert Storm

Fun fact: 7.5g limit can be overridden with a switch by the pilot to allow up to 10g. It's set to 7.5g based on the airframe and the support system for the pilot to help them survive that. Basically: you only use that button if you're dead otherwise.

This whole series of scenes were just like a punch to the gut one after another. To be honest, i wish this clip had lasted about a minute or so longer... For when Mav gets the REAL bad news. because its one dodged bullet after another, and you're just starting to sigh in relief and then BOOM. The hammer finally drops with Ice. It was such an emotional rollercoaster. I'm SO glad that Val Kilmer was able to reprise his roll and that He and Mav were best friends at this point because it added that much more pain on the roller coaster that we had just gone through with the GLock near miss, and then immediate bird strike.

Something I remember from way-back-when was that the F16 had an auto-level if it detected an altitude warning and a dead-stick response from the pilot. It's odd that the F18 wouldn't have the same thing.
