Holy mackerel -- I believe I've only read one Ron Goulart story in my whole life -- LawWagon -- but I have never forgotten it. You make me really want to go back and read these authors. Happy Holidays 😁!

Goulart wrote funny stuff right up to his death. Avram was a big fan of Goulart’s stuff. S

I liked this issue especially the story with the goat spirit thing that caused chalk to appear out of nowhere. Thanks for getting me into Avram's issues of F and SF

Interesting… that was the story that made the least impression on me, but the sign of a good magazine to appeal to good readers of different tastes…will be interested in hearing your readings of various issues as we get to them. Thx! S

Hi Scott! According to the Internet Speculative Fiction Database, the Johnson and Denton works in that issue of F&SF are those authors' only published works of sf, flashes of lightning in a digest magazine.

Yeah gotta give Avram credit for discovering two such unusual one-offs in the same slush pile…s

Have not heard Ron Goulart's name in a long time, thanks for resurrecting it. I found that he wrote a series of murder mystery comedies with Groucho Marx as the investigator. Have you read them? As Groucho is a personal hero, I want to read the series.

I have not read those but also keep meaning to... Some of the last Goulart stories I enjoyed were in F&SF about, I think, a ghost detective in Hollywood? I can't remember exactly. He wrote so much he's sometimes just mildly amusing but sometimes he's pretty hilarious... California-boy. s

I don’t know that story or Waldrop. But, coincidentally, his novel Them Bones is on my sick bed TBR stack… s

I do have all of Avram’s collection. You might start with the excellent revised Treasury which is available as an e-book, tho you can’t go wrong with any collection of his stories…. S
