Someone should produce a comedy where he goes back, with this, to re-duel Ralph Macchio from Crossroads. And it should have a key scene where he has to walk into the duel with the case for this thing. :-)

The strings at the tail of the guitar serve two purposes - they are used as a zither when Steve strums them, but when Steve plays the 12-string (particularly in the fretless area), they also act like the sympathetic strings on a sitar, vibrating freely from the resonant notes being plucked!

This is a one-off guitar, and presumably this is the only song written for it (or at least performed with it), and who else would even be able to play this song? They'd need the skills *and* access to the thing to practice/perform with it. I'm really amazed at the amount of work that went into this guitar.

If Steve and Ibanez wanted, they could sell a small run and probably bank on it. It would be very expensive. Have it be a premium where you buy it and you get a setup lesson by Steve, himself! You'd definitely need someone to show you how to do it. On second thought, they probably don't want to deal with tech support on that thing and will never do it. lol I don't blame them. The call center would be flooded by each owner, as complex as those likely are.

I think Steve Vai is extremely talented, but his stuff is hit or miss with me. I usually either really, really like it or I don't. This is not my favorite tune from him, but it isn't bad and is growing on me each time I hear it. Definitely, something I'll put on my playlist and listen to. I'm just waiting for someone to top Cheap Trick's Rick Nielson and his 5-necked Hamer beast, LOL. That Hydra comes close, though. I sure as heck couldn't compose music for it let alone play it. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he was working with Ibanez to develop the Hydra. But my biggest question is what is holding that sucker up as I don't see a shoulder strap? Is it hooked on a belt around his waist or is there some video magic going on? If you want to check out another talented guitarist who plays on a multi-necked guitar/bass setup, I'd recommend checking out a Luca Stricagnoli video with him doing a finger-style mash-up of three Iron Maiden songs.

I remember Vai from his Zappa days. Saw him live with Zappa. He was great and it was an awesome show. When he went solo, I had hoped that his time with Zappa would have helped him to compose at that level, but he's not really a composer, he's a guitarist. So while his lead melodies are often quite beautiful, the backing arrangements are usually not much more than backing tracks. He has gotten better in his old age, and his experimental guitar work as well as his influence on the music world in general, is worthy of respect, but I agree that his actual songs are hit or miss.
