Counting Calories with a Ballerina

Ойын-сауық

Behind the elegance of ballet dancer Theresa Farrell is an athlete to the core. In this episode of FUEL, we follow Theresa as she drops half a pound a week, working towards her performance goal weight for the upcoming ballet season with American Contemporary Ballet in Los Angeles, CA.
Theresa has honed her diet down to a science by keeping meticulous records, eating pre-packaged meals, and doing lots and lots of calculations - for her it’s a simple numbers game of calories in versus calories out. This precise calorie counting gives her the peace of mind to maintain her focus on training and long days of dancing, hiking, stretching, and icing. Whether she’s having a midnight bowl of cereal or a 5 A.M. corndog, Theresa has it all calculated, so when it’s time to take the stage, she knows that her body will be ready.

Catstarr i know you weren’t asking me, but as someone who has gone through the same thing: lots of ~therapy~. the only way to debunk an e.d.’s incorrect ideologies is to learn the facts and have your mind rewired. if someone unfortunately doesn’t have the money for therapy tho, it’s otherwise important to avoid triggers, and avoid things online or in the media about what “healthy” is. healthy looks different for everyone. and lastly, you have to WANT to recover in order to recover. you won’t get anywhere if you’re holding yourself back and it’s not YOU making the decision to get better. it’s your life and your choice.❤️ and of course remember that recovery is not linear, there will be slip-ups, and it takes a long time, but it’s possible for anyone to get there. i hope this helped xo :)

That is where the mental illness comes in... not everyone gets an eating disorder because they have been taught earlier in childhood how to control their priorities. Do not understand the logic that it is ok to kill plants but not animals? Where does this logic come from? plants have been on this earth longer then most animal life, some of the plants have a higher gene pool then humans. We can not exist with out them, so why is it ok to kill them and not mammals? It really depends where you live and what can grow in your environment and what animal protein lives in the same vicinity. Being relived of the guilt of having to kill something- by going to some grocery store, who brings in produce from around the world, when it is not even in season. Is this not even worse then eating meat? Life is way more complex the just becoming a vegetarian or vegan to ease the social conscience. It is very different if it is a religious purpose but most of these religions were based in climates that made this life possible. An example of this is northern north america or any were where it is cold. In northern climates not too much vegetarianism exist all over the world. These religious groups would have been extinct years ago.

If you really do care about plants, then you should cut down on the animal products, at least meat:) The animal has to eat a lot more feed to produce meat for you to eat that it is for you to just actually eat the plant. To short it down, you "kill" a lot less plants if you dont eat meat. The argument you're using is total and utter bullshit :)

  • @emilyisla8494

    @emilyisla8494

If you care about plants you care about deforestation right? Well that often is a result of farmers expanding to create land for the animals that you eat. Maybe you care about the planet as well? The number one cause of global warming is the meat industry. It's not even really about the killing of animals. It's the fact that in America 99% of meat comes from factory farms where the wellbeing of the animals are thrown out the window and they live lives based on suffering. The companies do not care if any of the animals are sick or dieing they only care about how many are still alive. These animals do not live natural lives, they do not live as they should in the wild. We, as humans, have manipulated they're evolution for our benefit, to make the most amount of money. It has gone far past the point of our survival. Oh also, if we stopped eating meat, then there would be enough food for everyone.

She planned her meals not to make sure she eats less to reach her goal weight, but to make sure she eats enough to meet her goal and function as an athlete. She also has a relatable approach to her diet - it's not all avocado toast and chia-mango-hemp smoothies, it's food she actually enjoys eating while also being good fuel for her body. This is the healthiest relationship to food I've ever seen.

As a former figure skater, I can tell you that this girl does not have an eating disorder. She is doing calorie counting perfectly as it should be done. I was afraid that this video was going to perpetuate the stereotype that all ballet dancers/figure skaters/gymnasts are anorexic and it’s just not true. These sports are so incredibly physically demanding that the simple truth is that you won’t last long if you have an eating disorder. You’ll be so weak that your performance will suffer or you’ll get yourself injured. When you’re an athlete, your body is your tool and you have to keep it running just right. Yes it’s very controlled - but this isn’t for the average person who isn’t an athlete. Not to say that there aren’t girls who have eating disorders who engage in those sports but it’s really not the norm.

This is because she is making sure that she doesn’t over or under eating so that she doesn’t loose her muscle or gain fats. Having as little fat and thin but very strong muscles makes you very strong and very fast. This way, she can be more efficient in her sport. To add this, this method is what I’ve been doing as a long distance runner.

Ballet companies used to put a lot of emphasis on what a body must look like in order to “function properly” and “perform its best” but it’s different for everyone. Not that this woman isn’t strong and healthy, but it sends a bad image about what dance is. Now, I find most dancers are very muscular, have their natural curves, they have breasts and glutes.

Now, companies recognize that a massive change needed to take place.

@@lindseylanez9604 that isn't true. some studios might not accept you if you aren't necessarily on the skinny side but it just all depends on the proper muscle, flexibility, and how much cardio you can take. of course, being lighter would have an advantage but that would just mean you'd have to work harder than others. a good studio would take someone in based on their skill, how determined they are and how hard they work, not because of their body type. it would look better but it isn't really a rule anymore.

You get a lot of exercise, have almost no fat, pure muscle, but eat processed food and people still call you unhealthy. No matter what, you can’t please everyone and people will still magnify your faults before acknowledging the positives. I’m not going to bother argue.

The thing is: she eats something she can measure in calories. It is a corn dog with a nutritional table. This is difficult when you eat , lets say, an organic vegan homemade blueberry cake bought at a cafe or farmers market. They don't have a nutrition fact label with calories and all that info. That is the only downside of counting calories.

Ok, so I went through an eating disorder based on calorie counting, and it was so different from what she is doing. She's staying healthy and really controlling what goes into her body, while working out and she's doing so without starving. I never knew calorie counting could be done like this, always thought of it as something negative after what I went through, but she's doing it in a very healthy and positive way, it's just important not to lose control and listening to what your body requieres.

Alot of people need calorie counting to make sure they eat enough, 200 calories not enough for a day can stop your weight from fluctuating for example 2000 calories a day will maintain your weight but 1800 calories you will gain weight and have less energy and the same with 2200 excess calories just weigh you down. I know how many calories I need in a day to have peak energy levels withought stacking on weight, because I have a physical job I will get too exausted if I haven't eaten the right amount, calorie counting can be a really useful skill

I've also struggled with an ED with obsessive calorie counting, and I am personally better off by doing intuitive eating instead of counting calories to maintain weight. Counting calories is not advisable for everyone who has dealt (or is dealing at the moment) with an ED - sure it can be healthy if done right, but that's like saying "just keep your units of alcohol to a healthy amount, it's doable!" to someone who suffers from alcoholism; it just doesn't quite work that way. If you're a professional athlete, then it is part of your job so ensure your body is performing to a certain degree, and as she explained the physical performance is directly linked to the amount of weight the body is carrying. As someone who is not an athlete, and who has suffered with an ED in the past, no I won't advise for myself counting calories even if it can be done in a healthy way (by others).

What she's doing IS what calories counting is! A healthy way to lose weight consciously even for non athletes! losing weight is just math and calories counting is the ultimate tool for that! it's just that some people took it and twisted it into something that it's not.. it all depends on how you're introduced to it and by whom/what! I was horrifed when I learned how its used by some. That's definitly not the way and is sure to cause some problems.

And damn if I were getting paid the way it seems she is, I'd work hard on my diet too. She's got a nice place in LA and a sports car and she shops at whole foods. what people perceive to be healthy is different for everyone. my personal opinion is that she has a very balanced diet whether or not she uses calorie counting as a method to achieve that. i can assure you that there are healthy and fit people who don't look at micronutrients either but stick to eating healthy foods. im coming from a place where calorie counting has evolved into an eating disorder and obsession, so what i am seeing here is someone who has instead used calorie counting as an indication of her progress but has not allowed calories to overtake/control her life (in the sense she isn't going to freak out for going over her calorie limit). so in this sense, she has a healthy relationship with food MENTALLY.

I agree with you but I have struggled with eating disorders for around 7 years and I think why people say calories don't matter is because people put too much value into the calories they eat in a day rather than the nutritional value and despite the nutrients your body actually needs. The woman in this video is an excellent role model because she obviously has such a healthy relationship with food and exercise. Calories matter but they aren't everything and I think many people either forget that or they don't realise it. Also congrats on your weight loss journey and I don't mean to offend or upset anyone I just am trying to understand everyone's POV. Also eating disorders didn't start because calories were invented. They are mental illnesses and that's what I think everyone forgets a little. I wish you all the best on your journey. Don't give up! xx

Even though she counts calories (which is something I personally don’t do), she seems to not obsess with it, she has a goal of what she wants her weight to be and she knows exactly what steps to take to get there. When people are up in the middle of the night shoveling food into their face to get in their recommended amount of protein/cals in the day, that is not healthy.

Counting calories 1,000% works if you are just trying to loose weight or maintain a thin frame. She is not trying to build curves, muscle and she’s not lifting so I think she’s 100% right! She knows what she’s doing and it’s working lovely for her. Not to mention her skin and hair look very healthy so she doesn’t look like she’s missing any meals!

Calorie counting can be super helpful when trying to gain weight/put on muscle too! Helps you realise how little you're eating but also highlights what foods you're eating and identify things you could add to your diet to improve muscle growth. Typically the rule is subtract 200 from your calorie "base" (something calculated based on your age/height, etc) if you want to lose weight and add 200 to your base if you want to gain muscle :)

Alexania you are right. I have thin hair myself, but it started to look like hers when I were on the lowest weight, and it was really bad when I became slightly underweight. Even now when I am back to ok weight, it did not grow back, looks like hers. Hair is the first thing to show us whether we need more. You can tell she is in the lowest scale of normal weight for her height.

KZread has been recommending this video to me for months now. The algorithm probably saw my constant calorie focused content and binge eating videos and decided to send this video my way. I don't know why I have not clicked on it until now. I feel like I have just had a revelation about my own relationship with food and weight loss in general. Seeing all these comments that feel the same really brings it home. The idea that you CAN have this kind of relationship with food is so refreshing. Yes, she is counting calories but she is also being mindful and listening to her body. I don't know how to explain exactly how this video makes me feel. I already know this is going to be a comfort video for me.

Calorie counting does not equal an eating disorder. I think people don’t realize just how important counting calories is. You may think you’re consuming 1,600 calories a day, but when you don’t accurately count your calories (this includes oils, butters, sauces, dressing), you can’t be sure. Most of us aren’t consuming one serving of pasta (trust me, it’s tiny), we aren’t eating one portion of chips.. we are eating for several people. That causes massive weight gain, and you don’t realize it until it’s too late. As they say.. it’s easier to gain than it is to lose. If you feel like nothing is working, no matter how hard you workout.. count your calories. See just how much you’ve been eating.

a w That's on the very small side - and only for a starter, too. Most sources consider a main meal pasta dish of penne, to be about 57g dry weight. That's closer to 55-60 penne pasta pieces. Even that's only 200 calories - which is fine for a main dish, as long as you don't go crazy with the sauces.

It's hard to imagine it because I worry obsessively about my weight and what I eat too. It's strange to see someone who is normal but health conscious. Gives me a new perspective.

She has a goal weight, fair enough. However, she is going about her weight lose in an unhealthy manner. Most ballerina's are required to remain thin, yet that never leaves room for your genetics. You can only do so much with your body, but what she really should have considered was discussing her goals with someone who is trained in this. Instead she is going about it on her own, which is dangerous. Her eating habits are rubbish and I am shocked that a personal nutritionist has not been assigned to her. Time is never on the side of those who are involved in these types of careers.

  • @monimarz

What? Seriously? Genetics do matter a lot. You gain weight in the areas your ancestors did. However, depending on what code came out between both parents you may not see it as pronounced as your other relatives. My mother is over weight and my father is skinny. I am like my father, but I do gain weight in the same area as my mother, which is my thighs, because my ancestors needed to store fat there. Hence the reason I struggle to slim that area down. Everyone has an area and it is all linked to genetics.

if you want to figure out how many calories you should be eating, download the app "myfitnesspal" and put in all your info for it to generate a number for you!.. Honestly the amount of calories you should eat to lose weight really depends on you & how much you want to lose per week. I cut my cals down to 1270 a day to lose 2 lbs/week, but like she says in the video, you can eat a lot of food even while restricting, as long as its healthy + has protein to keep you full :^) plus if you exercise you can eat more!

xmalfan *and* xxx boi I've found the best way to track your personal calorie needs is to calculate your BMR (basic metabolic rate) you can find calculators on the internet! Basically what a BMR is, is the amount of calories your body naturally burns if you stayed in bed all day with no physical activity. Whatever your BMR is, it's probably a good amount of calories to eat if you're trying to lose weight, just be semi-active during the day, do cardio when possible, and lift weights (building a little muscle boosts metabolism b/c muscle needs calories to maintain)
