Council Tools Velvicut Saddle Axe

UPDATE! Go to duenorthmerc.com and put your order in now! These are scheduled to ship on Monday, 30 Jan 17!
Thanks to the generosity of Craig Roost and Council Tools, I have another axe to review.
This one is their Saddle Axe, named for being traditionally carried in a saddle bag while on horseback.
These features were useful to the settler in the 1890's and for remote surveyors, bushcrafters and backpackers today.
Lightweight but powerful, it measures only 15.25" long and the 2 lb head is 7" long.
The drop forged 5160 steel has a 25 degree flat grind on the left side for cutting, shaving, and carving, and a beefier 32 degree bevel on the right for notching, splitting and heavier jobs. The right side also has a thicker cheek for strength.
Council Tool internal standards call for tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55 and they target 1-1/4 inches from the cutting edge. The poll and eye walls are not hardened and remain in the as forged condition. Smooth phantom bevels help with release and the eye is a standard cruiser size for future haft replacement.

Oil on a stone. Soak it in simple green/ purple power and boiling water. It’ll be totally clean overnight. I use water and Dawn. But won’t pass up an oil soaked stone

Great video buddy and a great USA product. I have just pulled the trigger on this for $220 delivered to me here in Coventry UK from Jackson Missouri. God bless America!

@@sunnybeach4837 I think it is a good axe. I think it was a bit overpriced at $220, but it is a rare double edge in cruiser size.

Very nice axe, I have a question for you, I have never used a double bit axe, but am tempted to try that one, I just wonder if the handle is too short, I know it's for easy packing but does it limit its usefulness, or is it just a matter of getting used to the different handle length ( as opposed to putting a longer handle on it).

  • @Shnick

Shelley Raskin thanks! I didn't think it was too short, in my more recent video, I put it thru its paces with a friend of mine. (Fatwood in the Rain) I believe you'll find the short handle balances well with the 2 lb head. It's not meant for felling trees, but it's more than capable of doing camp construction or splitting deadfall if called upon.

You can melt your wax and mix it with oil. When it cools down you'll have a softer wax so this way you won't have to heat up the axe.

Yes, I know, I work with a stick of wax, I use it for waxing the thread I sew leather sheaths with. It's more frugal when I heat the head. Thanks for the tip though!

Correction. Once you go oil you can in fact go back. Throw the stone in a boiling pot of water and boil the oil out. Then use water.
