COULDN'T MATCH UP | Failed 2nd Generation Wrestlers!
While wrestling is a business often built on family lineages, it doesn’t mean the same talent the parent has always transfers over to the children. Sure, there have been plenty of cases of second and even third generation stars making a huge splash, folks like Cody Rhodes, The Rock, or Roman Reigns. But what about those people who haven’t lived up to expectations? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to be looking at today. So, join us as we take a deep dive into Couldn’t Match Up: Failed Second Generation Wrestlers.

Lumping Richie Steamboat in here isn’t fair, IMO. He showed great potential in FCW and very early NXT, but a major back injury forced him away from the ring and cut his career short. That’s a world away from Erik Watts or David Flair.

Erik Watts' main problem was Bill Watts. Just as simple as that. Unlike many on this list, whose in-ring talents were questionable at best, Erik Watts had a decent in-ring talent, but just like David Flair, the family politics destroyed any chance he ever had to make anything. Ironically, he and David were briefly a tag team during early days of TNA.

I was going to type the same thing. If Manu had a better attitude, WWE would have continued to have him under employment. Didn't matter if he was average or below average in the ring, they would have kept him and used him in a mid-card or even upper mid-card role due to his connections and the fact that Vince loves his family. However, Manu apparently having a HORRENDOUS attitude backstage is what killed his WWE career. Even TNA didn't want him once they heard about his bad attitude. He did a quick thing with the NWA after his WWE release and even they didn't want to deal with him very much beyond a couple of matches. I've heard that these days he is MUCH more humble and a MUCH nicer person to others and he owns his own regional indie promotion called Battlefield Pro Wrestling.

Bad booking, lack of training and experience, the fans comparing them to their parent/grandparent, high expectations, and basically everything that goes into putting that kind of generational pressure on a rookie is what leads into all of them being trash. Notice I didn't say a word about their own actions or talent? That's because in almost all of the cases, it could have been fixed if they weren't thrown into the spotlight because one or more people in their family had a name before they arrived and instead went through the same sh-- that all wrasslers have to go through to get good, and have a name in the biz.

It's so weirdly ironic too because you would think, since they have all the cheat codes and an abundance of resources that they would at least know the ins and outs of the do's and don'ts and what works and doesn't. But it's like they just naturally don't have it to put it all together. But I feel that all 2nd generation should start in underground circuits and eventually development promos, let them either crash out of the business altogether or actually make a name for themselves, then at least that way they'll have a better appreciation for it more and approach it differently.

David Flair was the most pathetic that I can remember. That guy was such a lerp. How did Flair never teach his son at least the basics? Or did he, but this kids body just could not compute. It kills me how long he stayed in the picture wrestling. He was sooo bad, it was funny. Usually they grab some concepts. But this kid sucked until the end. It was great to root for him against Bischoff. But once that was over and they started putting him with Torri Wilson, who is just amazingly hot I was like what in the hell are they doing.

Richie Steamboat suffered an injury, not a failure. I thought he had great potential and really enjoyed watching his development. Would he have been as good as his dad? Unlikely, but 99% of wrestlers weren't/aren't as good as Ricky Steamboat. I also feel somewhat sorry for David Sammartino. He was good in the ring, but unfortunately he was just bland. While David Flair was awful, he was never trained properly or given the time or chance to improve so it wasn't entirely his fault, yet he probably shouldn't have been in the ring to begin with.

I wouldn't put Richie Steamboat on the list. He was injured before he ever got the chance. When I think of 2nd generation guys who never lived up to the name I think of Ted Dibiase Jr. or Bo Dallas. Ted was in a big stable for the time and won the tag titles but never really did anything beyond that and was the weakest link in Legacy. Bo Dallas had a decent run in NXT but on the main roster was a complete failure. Currently Brian Pillman Jr. could be considered a failure. He has big shoes to fill and is lacking a lot in the charisma department. Unless he can learn to talk now that he's signed to NXT.

Bo Dallas has a character on WWE named Uncle Howdy, who accompanied Bray Wyatt/Fiend (brother Wyndham Rotunda). With Bray's sudden death, Bo might have a chance to turn it around, honor his late brother, and have his own "family", if WWE will let him develop the Uncle Howdy persona, similar to Kane. People forget that Wyndham started out as Husky Harris, which could have made him a casualty, but then created Bray Wyatt, the Eater of Worlds, and that character took off, which evolved as the Fiend. So I suggest you keep Bo Dallas out of it, because he has potential to capitalize on Uncle Howdy, especially in the wake of his brother's sudden and tragic death.
