And the inevitable hard border being re-erected if the UK government says Northern Ireland has to leave the single market to satisfy the extreme hard brexit the UK government says is required to meet its Brexit red lines will spark the resumption of civil unrest, bombings and shootings in Northern Ireland like the days before the Good Friday Agreement.

blazednlovinit Ireland, as part of the EU, has a very strong voice in the world. Ireland's economy is far from "shitty" - Ireland's GDP per capita is near $70,000; the UK's is just $42,500. Economic growth in Ireland has been strong since the recovery started, and if predictions uphold, Ireland's (and the entire Eurozone's) economic growth will outpace that of the UK in the coming years. This is 2017 not 1939, military might is barely relevant anymore.

1 - A United Ireland is inevitable 2 - "Brexit" may hasten it, but it was going to happen anyway. 3 - Unionists can still keep British nationality and citizenship in a United Ireland. It's safeguarded in the Belfast Agreement. 4 - There are various structures for a united Ireland, depending which one is on the ballot paper, they could carry it in a vote tomorrow if they wanted to.5 - Both governments would rather leave it alone for 20 + years but historic changes have a way of creeping up unexpectedly and changing everything.

Being an Irish republican living in Derry, it's just so refreshing to read comments from people who aren't staunch loyalists who despise the entire Irish population of the world. To read from people who believe that a United Ireland is in our future. It gives me hope that one day we'll see an end to this bitterness and hatred, and live together in peace on this island. Even the tricolour itself symbolises this idea. Let there be peace, and hope, and unity!

blazednlovinit Another reason - statistically, the (largely republican) Catholic population is projected to overtake the (largely unionist) Protestant population within a generation or two. It'd take quite a while after that (ie, some people who would otherwise prefer a United Ireland would vote to remain in the Union to avoid another Troubles), but eventually unionism will be an untenable minority largely due to demographics. Shame when you think about it; all the terrorism perpetrated by Republican paramilitaries on a campaign that failed, when their goal would have just happened regardless if they bided their time and built a better political position.

Ireland was the only Western European country that was made a colony by an Imperialist power. If they hadn't been subjugated and brutalized by England they would have been involved in colonialism to some extent. It would not be unreasonable for Ireland to have had colonies on par with Belgium or Holland. Neither of those countries had large populations yet their holding including the Congo and Indonesia respectively.

I can't imagine they would be much of a challenge this time around, especially when the provost could just enlist in the Irish army and fight them openly and legitimately. Don't forget the provos were able to fight the British to a stalemate, in their own words , and they were just ordinary people with a belief and little proper training. In 1155, he wrote the Papal Bull 'Lauadabiliter' and he effectively gave Ireland to England. This allowed the English king to invade. Similar to the way the new world was divided between Spain and Portugal in papal edict and the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494

A natural event which affected northern England and parts of Scotland as well. The British supplied help for two years before a change in government brought a new policy. The Irish weren't helping themselves so stop giving them stuff. A bad decision as it turned out but not unreasonable. As a result of the famine the English repealed the corn laws and certain shipping laws. America had similar shipping laws which they repealed only in modern times. At the height of the famine there weren't enough ships to transport the food. Hence change of laws. Also changing the corn laws almost cost us the first world war. So life is complicated

Scotland, Ireland and Wales should leave the UK. It is far better for all of them to stay in the EU and in their mind and heart they all know it. The future belong to the fittest and they will be very wellcome into EU, a union for diversity and for the small people. The bankers do not care about the farmers or lokal productivity they want to play around the world. Money has corruptet the UK, instead of serving the people in the lokal community. The Brexiters are the true Globalists that will allow the money made in Scotlans ending in Singapore or China. To whom does that make sense? What you're suggesting is the disbanding of a Republic to rejoin a Kingdom that treated us brutally for around 800 years. As if that wasn't enough, it would also mean leaving the EU. That's fairly daft. Regarding the border question, members of the EU are required by EU law to maintain customs borders with those countries at external borders of the EU, even those within the EFTA. This presents problems to Good Friday Agreement which guarantees an invisible border. The two are at odds and law usually supercedes earlier law. It requires a legal & sensible solution.

Here's my view: Yes to Scottish independence, yes to Welsh independence, yes to Irish unification, yes to Manx independence, yes to Cornish independence, but let's renegotiate our relationships with the European Union, abolish the European Commission, and make the European Union something that has only financial power, and does not make the bureaucratic attempt to control people's lives.

A united Ireland has only been considered from a Irish point of view, but never once has it been considered that Ireland should be reunited by rejoining the United Kingdom. Why not? A 32-county republic is never going to happen and the closest it has come is an on-the-blink devolution which is going to be replaced by permanent direct rule very soon. The Republic itself is a failed ex-colonial state which has driven out many generations of people to find work in other countries, while looking after an old shop who hand down their jobs to sons and daughters through tight connections in precluded interview processes. The Republic is a hinterland outside of Cork and Dublin in a highly unstable economy with a rickety financial system. It has never been considered by this country because of issues to do with pride and 1916 and Sinn Féin-IRA.

'A united Ireland has only been considered from a Irish point of view, but never once has it been considered that Ireland should be reunited by rejoining the United Kingdom. Why not?' The English. 'A 32-county republic is never going to happen and the closest it has come is an on-the-blink devolution which is going to be replaced by permanent direct rule very soon.' It was said that a 26 county Irish republic would never happen also. Unionists said they would never share power with nationalists. The UK government said it would never pay a penny in the divorce to the EU. Margaret Thatcher said she would 'never talk to terrorists' The World is full of its 'never going to happens'. 'The Republic itself is a failed ex-colonial state which has driven out many generations of people to find work in other countries, while looking after an old shop who hand down their jobs to sons and daughters through tight connections in precluded interview processes.' I beg to differ. Ireland is one of the few ex-colonies to maintain an unbroken democracy since its foundation a century ago. It has a written constitution and working legal, tax raising and other institutions you would expect to find in a working democracy. Its debt to GDP ratio is his lower but its GDP per capita is higher than that of the UK, which is still using a first-past the post electoral system is unsuited to a country with no demos. Ireland is an outward looking country, while the UK is an insular nation who jealously guards is sovereignty. Ireland is country much more secure in its identity, is much more compassionate and inclusive than the UK. Its identity has been strengthened rather than diminished by leaving the UK and later joining the EU and is confident enough to judicially share sovereignty. I know misery loves company, but Ireland tried the UK and it didn't work out. We're not going back to the future. Enjoy Brexit!

Ireland is head over heels for the EU because it literally couldn't survive without it. All about money. You barely had any roads before the 1980s. Ireland produces nothing and survives on handouts, dodgy corporation tax arrangements and straight-up corruption. It's an oligarchy run by and for bankers and billionaires just like the UK currently is. Almost your entire economy is centred around Dublin and Cork, just like ours is nothing but London and burgeoning Manchester. Whilst I voted remain and am deeply fed up of Brexit, I accept the UK did, can, and probably will again cope standing alone. Ireland went straight from digging potatoes with bare hands, to complicated service industries and being done over by American tech giants looking to fiddle their tax, without stopping to shore up everything in between. There is no manufacturing to fall back on, nothing to actually sell. Ireland is on a very shaky nail and their sabre rattling about Brexit used to sound like smug arrogance. It now sounds like denial and panic, with the EU restructuring negotiations to allow them a chance to try and regain the upper hand while making the UK look stupid. I should remind you that I'm a remain voter and even I can see what's going on. Brexit will really hurt Ireland because they will now be very isolated. 75% of a small island which is now physically located hundreds and hundreds of miles from the EU. That's expensive, time consuming and difficult.

Well Clarissa, you are not remainer. Your condescending post-imperial resentment betrays your Brexiter credentials. Ireland has made a success of its EU membership, it has modernised its economy, expanded its export markets, developed its infrastructure - thanks to the EU. It has also become a more liberal country, more secure in its national identity and culture - in large part due to EU membership. The UK, according to the Brexiters, has not made a success of membership, has developed a very narrow version of identity and is less secure about itself. After two world wars and one world cup, it is jealous of German hegemony. Ireland produces 8 times more food than it needs, and exports much of the surplus to the UK which for all its genius cannot feed itself. Its corporation tax is the envy of many, including the UK which is lowering its own to compete with Ireland. No country 'survives' on corruption and I can't think of any foreign billionaires running it. Irish people never dug potatoes with their bare hands - you'd use a spade or pitch fork. After a great deal of hard work, Ireland became successful in attracting foreign direct investment from the US and is now the EU HQ for Intel, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo etc. However, it did not happen overnight as you suggest. It has the largest budget airline in the Europe and is a world leader in aircraft leasing and several multi-national agri-food companies that employ 100,000 people around the world. Today Ireland has a higher GDP per capita than the UK, and, even after the banking debt, a lower debt to GDP ratio than the UK. You won't know this because when you think of Ireland you think 'potatoes'. Unlike the UK, Ireland knows it is on a shaky nail, exposed as it is to the collateral damage of a distinctly incoherent English nationalist brainfart. Only people like you can explain why it is expected that Ireland should not defend its interests in such circumstances. When Ireland spoke of its concerns nobody in the UK listened because it was just Ireland - but the EU is listening.. Ireland has been firm in relation to its interests, with the UK in the unusual position of being weaker than Ireland. This must be a complete head wrecker for the British, and given the circus in the UK, it may appear smug. Its just a reality of Brexit. Brexit is your fault. It is British policy. It is British folly. Not only is this going to damage your economy and standard of living, it will undermine the whole UK. We want to limit the enormous damage it does to us, don't blame the Irish for that. That's our responsibility to ourselves. We didn't ask for Brexit. The UK is making a pigs ear of Brexit and you know it. The UK is a laughing stock and we Irish are actually embarrassed on your behalf. And we're all fucked. Together. For Ireland its like being tied to a drowning man who likes to remind us that we're going to drown with him. Finally Clarissa, don't ever enter a quiz with Ireland as your specialist subject, you will only make an eejit of yourself. Enjoy Brexit.

Why thank you Michael, The ignorance of people like Clarissa McPigeon is utterly breathtaking. They still have the old imperial condescension, but otherwise these days, its hard to believe such people had ancestors that ran an empire upon which the sun never set. Brexit UK is headed up by used car salesmen who are selling Brexit in pursuit of Empire 2.0. Its the politics of the fake orgasm Michael, and if us Irish don't all pretend with them, the likes of Clarissa pops up with her condescending ignorance to remind you that in her uninformed opinion, you're nothing anyway. They are too stupid to feel any shame. They deserve pity.

The Potato was never important as you Imagine to the Irish economy During the Famine only 17% of arable acreage was dedicate to growing Potatoes the remaining 83% arable acreage dedicated to Cash crops and exported to the Uk Significant amounts of food were leaving Ireland during the Famine years. In 1847 alone, the worst year of the Famine almost 4,000 vessels carried food from Ireland to the major ports of Britain, that is, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool and London. Over half of these ships went to Liverpool, the main port both for emigration and for cargo and Shipping. 1845- 3,251,907 quarters (8 bushels=1 quarter) of corn exported from Ireland to England 1845 - 257,257 sheep exported to Britain 1846 - 480,827 swine exported to Britain 1846 - 186,383 0xen exported to England 1847 - 4,000 ships carrying peas, beans, rabbits, salmon, honey and potatoes left Ireland for English ports 1847 - 9,992 Irish cattle sent to England 1847 - 4,000 Horses and Ponies sent to England 1847 - Approximately 1,000,000 gallons of butter sent to England 1847 - Approximately 1,700,000 gallons of grain-derived alcohol sent to England The famine was not really a famine at all. Ireland, then as now, was a country capable of producing large quantities of food, and continued to do so throughout the famine years. Only a single crop, the potato, failed. No other crops were affected and there were oats and barley being produced in Ireland throughout these years. But these were considered ‘cash crops’, produced for export and owned not by those who worked in the fields but by large landowners. Food exports continued virtually unabated even as people starved. You are asking a Condescending Question .Things have kind of moved on in the last 170 years If you exclude Luxembourg from the equation then Ireland is the Richest per capita in GDP terms Eurozone country . You seem to have an outdated view of the Irish economy. If you include 2018 economic metrics then Ireland is the 6th wealthiest country in the World. it has been outperforming and the fastest growing economy in Europe for a number of consecutive years now. By all measurable metrics The Republic of Ireland has a thriving economy Ireland is the European hub to over 1,000 leading multinational companies! Companies who require a skilled, educated and highly capable workforce to drive their success chose to locate in Ireland.
