Great informative video again! :D The reason you were finding lots of rental vacancies around town is that there’s not a shortage of premium rentals. There’s a shortage of AFFORDABLE rentals. The newer buildings are pricing out people or students who make even an average income. If you are a single income household, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything affordable. Hopefully this changes in the future. I also have a suggestion for a future video if you need an idea. Halifax and NS has such a wide array of locales and variety of neighbourhoods that look different that it might be fun to find out what movies or shows have been filmed around here and show their filming locations. There’s a really good filming industry! :) You’d be surprised what’s been made here! (Also gives you another angle to show off other places around the province)

@Jasveer Singh Bal Hi Jasveer, thanks for the info. I've done research and Haifax has milder winter compared to other parts of Canada, often gets green Christmas. As for healthcare, i believe it'll be better than Malaysia public hospitals. We're looking for a slower pace city to live in but with the influx now to NS is somewhat worrying also the property situation.

My wife and i just can't bare raising our young boys in Malaysia, being from Singapore i'm sure you know Malaysian moving to Singapore and why. We plan to start our own digital marketing company there, i hope that won't take too long to established while we rely on our savings. We have over 10 years experience here in Malaysia. The real concern i have now really is housing, can i find a rental? Even so i can't worry till i actually get there, still waiting for ITA so it might take a while. Hope you make your transition back to Singapore smoothly brother, take care

Nicely done guys! That being said, on the outskirt areas of Halifax, and in the farther reaches of HRM, there are plenty of properties for between $159,000 - 359,000, with, of course, the same bidding wars happening

The more you travel, the more you see that there are so many wonderful things in the world. It can be difficult to settle for something great when you can see that there could always be something better just round the next corner. Travel can sometimes simply be about a quest for perfection. Housing here in South Eastern Ontario has gone crazy...our home value has risen two and a half times of what it cost us to build it just over 3 years ago...we could not afford our home now if we had to buy it in 2021!!! Taxes here are less as well as groceries are less than what they are on the East Coast...but we do not have the ocean and thats priceless!! Always good to see your videos take care stay well!!..Viv

Hey guys great video! As far as housing, both rentals and purchasing, i think this thing is happening all over Canada. I'm in Toronto Ontario, and the market here and all over Ontario is just going crazy! Cell phone plans in Canada, or in Ontario anyway are just rediculous i think we pay the highest in the world. We get taxed to death! The groceries are crazy!

Thank you so much. I know this is a year old and prices have risen, but it still gives us an idea. Hubby and I are just starting to do a bit of research on a couple of places to move to. We're in our 70s and are wondering if Halifax might be good for us. - The temperature there seems to be a lot warmer than it is here in Alberta, but is comparable to the other place we're researching (Niagara-on-the-Lake). - Groceries there look a little cheaper for some things than here. For instance, that $6.99 package of ground beef would have been $12 here a year ago... today it's even higher. - A shortage of many healthcare professionals is happening in many countries right now... because many of the doctors and nursing staff are retiring. As a result of that, some doctors are becoming "locums", which means they work like a "casual (taking the place of doctors when they're on holiday, sick, or on days off). That's what happened with a few doctors here... and we no longer have a family doctor because of it. It's probably going to get worse before it gets better, sadly.

I used to live in Cunard Court on Brunswick Street right downtown from 97-99 on the 8 floor overlooking the water and city and paid 850 a month for a two bedroom including built in laundry and utilities included. Times have changed haha.

You showed some really wonderful, older, neighborhoods of Halifax, both residential and commercial: loved them! Considering it's prime location on the water, Halifax's prices seem quite reasonable. Once again, great place to be "stuck".

Once the carbon tax was implemented, everything from gas, food and heating your home has increased only to get worse.

Thanks for this video! My husband and I just got our PR (living in Vancouver right now) and we are considering Nova Scotia next. We’ve been binge watching your videos about Halifax. So thank you! I’ve heard it’s pretty similar to BC in a lot of ways. How big is the Organic market over there? And Zero Waste movement?

Halifax is very expensive as a renter considering the proportion of average renter household income on rent and utilities; the same goes for other Maritime cities like Fredericton, Saint John, and Moncton. It is better to own a place if you can afford to and even better to have it paid for, but the cost of living will be much less if you live in some other provinces outside of Atlantic Canada where property taxes and provincial income tax is much lower and you also get much more services for the taxes you pay.

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and I hate it. I've lived here for 15+ years and in the recent years it's become increasingly apparent how corrupt and broken our government is. Nova Scotia has a monopoly on alcohol, weed and even electricity. We've had nurse strikes, teacher strikes, and postal strikes that have lasted longer than they should have because of our former premier, Stephen McNeil. Apartment prices are rising so high that a 62 year old man committed suicide when his rent doubled. We are in the midst of a health care crisis and our government would rather spend 72 and a half million dollars (our tax dollars) on a excessively lavish library meanwhile our hospitals are underfunded and doctors are moving away. Sorry for ranting I'm just mad all the time because of new stunts our government is pulling to appeal to tourists, Nova Scotia is definitely a beautiful place but it's changing quicker than the people who live there can keep up.

I lived there in the 60' as a child. It was a great place to grow up in. Moved elsewhere as a teen, and have been living outside Canada for nearly 50 years. At heart am a Haligonian. Planning a short visit to my 'home town' in September, and can't wait to walk down memory lane.

great information, guys! Prices are similar to ours here in southern California. apartment rentals here are a bit higher; for instance, in my city, 2 bedroom apartments average rent is 2100.00 usd while studios will typically rent for about 1300.00. Single family homes with 3 bedrooms are selling for about 700,000.00 usd. Very informative info, thanks again!!

@@DelightfulTravellers i live in Fullerton, CA...pretty close to Disneyland in Anaheim and about 30 miles south east of downtown LA. you can surely find a much higher price range! there are some downtown Fullerton lofts and studios that go for 3000.00 usd and you can find million dollar homes, too!! :)

We just purchased a house north of Sackville. $500,000 for 1.17 acres and a 5 bed 3 bath house with 2 garages. Can’t wait to be out there. It makes sense to come out to NS from Vancouver or Toronto as you can purchase two houses for the price of one.

I'm considering to move to Canada, very interested into living in Halifax, seems just like the right place for me, the more info i get the more i like it. I have a 3 bedroom heritage house that has been insulated throughout..I heat it with oil hot water heat ( cast iron radiators) ...in winter I pay around $800/month. This year has not been as cold so it ranged 450-800/ month.

Hi Trevor, we'll have to get together the next time we're in NS and share a drink. Atlanta is getting too crazy. We're going to sell and hop in the RV for a while and take some pictures. We spent a month in Quebec, PEI, NB, NS and CB in 2019. One thing that we noticed was that PEI and NS had definitely been "discovered". We grew up in Charleston pre Internet. Once the "well kept secret" got out, things changed drastically. As for Atlanta and the present, we have 2700sf and a dual fuel house with natural gas and electric with gas running the furnace, hot water and stove top. Our house is likely more insulated than what you would find in Canada as we are very serious about keeping cool for 6 months of the year. We average about $275 per month for gas and electric. The thing about Atlanta is that you have to like helicopters, sirens and construction. Noise is an issue and crime is growing. Having an RV allows us to escape to pockets of the US and Canada where people are more civil and the pace is slower. Maybe we'll see you in the Superstore- look for us in the wine isle.

I live in a split entry about 25 minutes outside of HRM and we pay about $200 a month for oil. Keep in mind that we have oil hot water not electric and heat pumps that we use to offset during the really cold months.

Another great video. Its the 'Halifax Common'. The Common extends well beyond the large green open space shown in the video. The lands were set aside to be used generally for the people. The Common today also contains public buildings such as hospitals, the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History, schools, and other public spaces such as the Public Gardens, a cemetery, etc.

The Federal government really needs to give incentives for Foreign Doctors to come over here. I’m from Ontario and even over here it’s a bit of a stretch with the Family doctor. Most people move around areas in Ontario so when they grow up, they most likely owe the same family doctor they’ve always had even thou they’ll live 3 hours away.

I love Mama Grati's. I recommend the smoked salmon wrap!

My daughter and I lived in that building on Quinpool when she was in University at St. Mary's lol, Was so noisy with the trucks coming all night , we didn't last long, moved to N. Robie.

Good informative video. About healthcare; yes it is difficult to get a family doctor but if the person feels they may be seriously ill, they can go to Emergency and be seen relatively quickly. Also, regarding heating oil, I recently paid around 92c / litre .

Love the town. Would be interesting a comparison to staying in a villa in the Philippines. Moral of the vlog is bring a fat wallet or full purse with you or high end card if considering Halifax. Next vlog, living in Halifax on the cheap.

Halifax on the cheap would be tricky. You can't compare it to the Philippines as (in general) there are more jobs / opportunity to make a lot more $$$$$. That's why a lot of folks are moving here. We prefer that PH weather though 😉 - Trevor

I have no idea of income tax, but after all CCP..Tax..EI..I roughly will get my cheque for 83% of my total wage. Most apartments in Halifax water and heat are included, some also include power, which is really awesome. However, there are many old apartments and houses in downtown area, and my previous apartment has mice and cockroach. I want to tell new comers, please take that into your consideration, it is serious problem when you notice your home has those little friends after you sign the contract. It happened to me, my friend and my colleagues, luckily our lease was finished and we were able to move to our current apartment, we are now paying almost double the rent, but we are sharing instead of living alone, this building is very clean, new, secured, and especially super good location right in downtown. Pay a bit more to live this kind of environment is definitely worth it.☺️

PS: Apply the RODNEY DANGERFIELD RULE!!! ALWAYS travel with or rent a refrigerator in your room along with an electric "HOT PLATE" and "HOME COOK" your own meals. You'll save a fortune over "ROOM SERVICE" or "DELIVERY"!

Nice to see some of my old haunts after spending all my Uni life in various parts of Halifax. Surprised to see Scotia Square, I remember it as a thriving shopping mall but then everything started to close. Love Halifax but will probably not move back now after lots of debate and research (surprisingly health care and crime rates are the major cons for this city and sadly NS overall is rated very poorly for health care). Still love the small city feel and of course the nearness to the water, beautiful beaches/ocean and more moderate climate.

The Halifax Commons is made up of two parts , you were on the North Common and where the skate park and tennis courts make up the South Common. There is a Mainland Common in Clayton Park as well.

Guys this kills me! I’ll be moving back to Halifax from Denmark (been here 10 years) within the next two years. Prices for housing, food are similar to here! That’s crazy how much they’ve gone up. Internet and phone were always questionably high. I owned a place near Dal (University/Henry) can’t imagine what it’s worth today. The wine prices kill me. We get good drinkable wine for $3 a bottle and beer is cheaper than pop. Can we convince people to move to Denmark instead so I can move home. Just don’t plan on eating out in Denmark - prices are killer.

Here in NYS? In my city (YONKERS) we have a combined "SALES TAX" of 8&3/4%. Similar to that of NYC upon which we border directly to its Northern boro of THE BRONX.

Your internet and mobile are expensive even by Halifax standards. Keep on the lookout for promos. About a year ago, during a Eastlink promo, I switched my internet and mobile to Eastlink for really good savings for 2 years (I'll have to do some phone work when the 2 years is up). Mobile service seems just as good and Internet is very close. Great job on the video and it will be great to see some summertime videos soon--today was a nice hint of what's to come.

We pay for a higher speed internet (Bell) so it's a bit pricer. We thought about switching to a low cost one for $60-70 but we hear folks often lose their internet service quite often. That's not worth it to us. - Trevor

@@DelightfulTravellers Aside from 2 short power outages, I haven't lost service once with Eastlink in the last year but I was forgetting your upload requirements. I'm sure your uploads are quicker with the end-to-end fiber you get with Bell. I had that same service with Bell for many years before I switched.

We were considering building a new home in Halifax a few years ago. I have family in NB and my husband has family in NFLD but our siblings live in Ontario and it was hard to leave them. I need to be by water. I just love it.

Aww guys, I know this is not a new video but it was very helpful to put things into perspective. I've been looking into moving to Halifax for a little while now, and I am a nurse, so it sounds like I'd be making ends meet barely after all the taxes, groceries and utilities haha. Not much different than the UK I guess.

Beautiful area think Ill stay home! For $550K none of these can compare to our home…….US ….we are also having a housing crisis…..they cant build fast enough….IF they can build at all! Very expensive!

It’s a crazy real estate situation in Las Vegas as well, no inventory! Would t have been able to afford, let alone find, the house that we bought last April.

Cost of living in Halifax seems outrageous now. Real estate is not our of reach like in Toronto, but considering the price of houses outside of city are same as Calgary, AB which is 1.4mil population city with different wages and opportunities its just too much. I checked Halifax real estate, houses that sold in 2017 for 220,000 is now selling for 370,000. That is not a normal appreciation and it can cripple someone if prices fell down and you have this expensive mortgage on cheap property. I doubt wages were rising as fast as housing cost, so now its just for people bringing money from outside, not working there and paying it off. Its hugely overvalued considering the wages. The rental is bonkers, the price is more than some of the bigger cities in Canada core downtown. (excluding Toronto, Vancouver) At least food and transportation seems to be cheaper, which hopefully balances out the biggest cost.

there might be a sign but when you inquire they put you on a waiting list. There are no vacancy in halifax right now, unless you can pay 2000/month not including utilities. Halifax is very small and there's not much to do, you would tire of it very quickly.

Maybe you could mention things like (car or general) insurance etc...if you ever do another video like this one. Thanks again.

Thanks Fema! We don't own a car but it's the one thing we know we missed. Car prices are the same throughout Canada. We used to own a car and insurance was around $100 a month (roughly) for a small car depending on what it is. Gas isn't cheap here in Canada either - Anna

I live an hour away from Halifax, I'm looking to move to the city sometime, it's definitely expensive in Halifax, though somewhat more affordable in Dartmouth, you just need to find a good neighborhood. No way you could live by yourself on minimum wage.

Interesting to see how expensive food is in Canada. In Germany I pay €3.12 or $4.65 for 12 pieces of free-range eggs. My unlimited internet usage including landline phone costs me 30€ or $45 per month.

Informative and kind of depressing! I certainly cannot afford to move to Halifax, but the purchase and rental markets here in New England are tight as well. It's a sign of the times.

@@DelightfulTravellers your food and alcohol prices are higher, as well as internet. New England has old housing inventory regardless of the state. As far a city pricing, Boston housing prices for purchase and rentals, are higher than Halifax. A fixer upper condo with street parking would go for a bare minimum of $500,000 in the suburbs. 🥺

The YM and YWCA's are still a GREAT "fitness center" deal IF you're lucky enough to STILL have then around in your city or town. Many have closed, sadly, because of lack of members lured to more "SEXY" and fashionable commercial competitors.

Then, if you have a car, your costs for insurance, licences, gas, maintenance, and parking, etc. add up. You are also obliged to have content insurance if you rent.

There are lots of doctors but not many employed. The question is how many people would like to work for free without thinking about student loan

I pay $10 a month for Fit 4 Less. I use Koodo pay as you go for $15 a month.

Try eating at Kofuku Japanese Thai restaurant at 2752 Robbie Street , WOW, great food great prices. Only opened up 8 weeks ago. Super great food for the money.

Interesting. I live on the west coast of Canada, on Vancouver Island (temporarily - moving to NS soon) so many of the costs you explained are familiar - i.e. utilities, food, transportation, housing, taxes etc... but the overall cost of living on the east coast is considerably less than the west coast, especially housing and ferries - even Superstore costs! In addition to the HST, BC has extra luxury/entertainment/travel accommodation/environmental/carbon/vice taxes on select products, goods, and services. My monthly budget and lifestyle costs are going to cut in half once I switch coasts. Thanks for the video. I'd rather get the scoop from you than from a real estate agent.

There's no question that costs in NS / Halifax are way less than BC / Van. It's once you travel outside both major cities (towns / rural etc) is where we'd be very curious how the costs stack up - Trevor

@@DelightfulTravellers Currently, I live on the island, in a small town outside of Victoria where developers are going nuts building condos and gated commuter communities. This is driving up local real estate and rental costs, not to mention overloading infrastructure and destroying the rainforest, old-growth trees etc... People want ocean views and access to coastal lifestyles without paying the urban premium. Here is an amusing example: a local golf course was sold (under protest) to a developer who built a giant condo neighbourhood that consisted of apartment-style, townhouse style, duplex/triplex style and detached style homes squished together, all of which sold for about 30% less than the equivalent urban developments. Now the new residents want a golf course so they don't have to commute to Victoria on the weekends too. LOL! My family likes small-town life which is why we found a small town in NS and bought a big old house. We want to be part of the existing community. I can't wait to discover NS again.

It's pricey here indeed. Property tax (more or less and based on our experience) is 1% of the value of your home. So if a place is $500,000 you'd pay about $5000 per year. Now that's on the peninsula of course but I imagine it's similar throughout HRM - Trevor

I live in Mount Uniacke about 30min outside of halifax more bang for your buck payed $250,000 big home lots of land lol
