I learned this bass line and even after I learned it well I discovered playing it with his timing /feel and dynamics is very challenging. He’s an exceptional Bass player, which was his first instrument.

While it's most likely a coincidence, pop music "rules" state that having your chorus around 50 seconds to 1:20 is the optimal spot to maximize retention. Cory does funk/pop a lot of the times (and he's successful at it) so I wouldn't be surprised if he's just programmed to compose music like this, we all should be since it's what most of us end up listening anyway.
