I feel like SO many people underrate Victoria. Yes, I get it, Emily is amazing and she deserved so much more than she ever got. But Victoria, I am convinced, is just as amazing in her own right: only she doesn’t get as much screen time and character development, because it isn’t her story. The glimpses we do get are enough to show that she is not the boring, generic nobody that most people seem to take her for.

Yes!! I personally think people tend to really undermine Victoria and overly criticize Victor due to their preference for Emily. Now I do find Emily very charming; while a little unhinged, you can tell she is kind and fun person, and her piano skills are just lovely; and these traits of hers do mix well with Victor because he is also kind albeit more shy, and he also plays the piano well; Emily and Victory playing the piano together is my favorite scene. That being said, Victor is very socially awkward and nervous, and Victoria is calm and gentle and soothes his side of him. She may not play the piano herself but she admires the piano and Victor's ability to play it. And let us not forget her determination, loyalty, and hidden sass; she freed herself and ran in the rain to get Victor back when she realized he was married to a dead person and her snide remarks to Barkis how things did not go according to his plan! People often say Emily deserves better than Victor because of how he tried to get away from her and his frank/harsh(?) comments to Emily, not realizing that him trying to get away from Emily is him trying to get back to Victoria who he loves; that is LOYALTY right there; it does not matter if others say he is better matched with Emily, HE wants Victoria and he stays loyal to that until he sees that Victoria is now to be married to another "better" match; and then he decides he might as well use his life to make Emily happy then; that is honestly quite admirable really. Victor, despite his immaturity, is actually a pretty good person, he just did not love Emily in the way she wanted, and Emily deserved someone who loved her is all.

  • @StoryMing

@@msk-qp6fn I would call Victor awkward, or clumsy, but not really immature. Yes he could definitely have worded some of the things he said a little better; and his attempt to abandon her in the woods, given her past history, was unfortunate. But he was panicked, not thinking clearly; and she was stalking and holding him captive against his will, after all! He didn’t mean any of it the way it came out, you could tell he genuinely felt bad about it. And I think it says a LOT that he was fully prepared to keep his word, even if it meant giving up an unexpected second chance to be with the girl of his dreams. I think Emily could have done really well with someone as vivacious and lively as herself, and I wish there might have been someone like that for her; but In Victor’s case… It was really more the idea of love and marriage that he represented, than Victor himself, that she was in love with.

Also, his trying to escape was not _only_ about getting back to Victoria. It is true that he DID very much want to; but even apart from this, there is also the fact that he doesn’t really belong in the land of the Dead, because he is still living. And that he was not actually speaking the vows to Emily, in the first place: he had no idea she was even there! It was in fact the thought of VICTORIA which inspired him to say his vows so perfectly. The marriage to Emily was without his voluntary consent (until afterwards).

Tbh I still think Victor had better chemistry with Emily, but that's inevitable considering he spent the greater part of the movie with her and not Victoria, there should have been more scenes of him and Victoria bonding together before he "married" Emily, to explain his feelings for her a bit more, I mean they only had two interactions, the piano scene and the failed wedding rehearsal scene so when he said "I should be with you always" after briefly visiting her in the living world it seemed forced to me as it was basically their 3rd interaction. Not saying he shouldn't have ended with Victoria (he would have to DIE to be with Emily) but I think there should have been a bit more of development between the two just so we wouldn't feel robbed of a ship 🤣

Emily was seeking refuge after being betrayed by the man she married. This was not a love story between Victor and Emily but a tragedy focusing on Emily. Emily wanted someone to fill her hole in her heart, which, unfortunately, Victor became the victim of (or most likely the “target”.) Victoria, in her first interaction, was attractive from his love for piano and his awkward personality, while Emily just wanted to feel affection. Regardless, she would have fallen in love to whichever man proposed to her, while Victoria, although they had a small interaction, fell in love with what she witnessed. Therefore, I ship victoria with Victor.

@@kiwimiwi5452 you know, there is even this theory that Emily and Victoria were actually sisters, that Victoria’s parents lost their money because Emily took it when she was about to elope and it all happened when Victoria was a baby and her parents probably never even knew she died so they were so angry they chose to never talk about her again (something that happened back then if one of the children refused to get married) and that’s why they didn’t remember/recognize each other. Some things that hint that is the fact that it’s said Emily’s parents had a lot of money and the Everglots seem to be the only actually rich family there, Victoria says her mother doesn’t allow her to play or even get near the piano because she says “music isn’t proper for a young lady” because it’s “too much passion” and Emily plays the piano really well, the mother probably associated Emily’s excess of emotion and lack of reasoning with her passion for music, and it’s said in that song that Emily’s dress was her mother’s wedding dress (some families have a habit of keeping their wedding outfits for their kids to wear it someday) and Victoria’s wedding dress looks brand-new

I think that they wanted to be together because they didn’t want to marry some “old man” in case of Victoria!! The parents force them to marry and when they saw each other they thought “yeah i can marry this person. He’s young, beautiful and doesn’t have experience just like me so i don’t see a problem”!! Not saying i prefer Victor with Emily. I rather prefer Victor and Victoria BUT don’t say it’s love, because it isn’t!! Perhaps with time they can love each other BUT in that whole movie situation THAT WAS NOT LOVE!! thank u soo much for reading

Fun fact: this movies stop motion animation is so good, people were convinced it was actually CGI. And Tim Burton was super offended by this, because he's proud of the art of stop motion, so when he made Frankenweenie, he really held back on it ON PURPOSE so they could tell it was stop motion.

In arranged marriages, they don't let the couple see each other until the actual wedding for fear they'd chicken out beforehand. That's where the "bad luck to see each other before the wedding" superstition comes from.

  • @snowangelnc

    @snowangelnc

    7 ай бұрын

It doesn't even have to be an arranged marriage, or the first time they see each other. It's not unheard of for a person to get cold feet when the reality of the huge commitment they're making sinks in. Also, in many arranged marriages the couple meets and spends time together before the wedding. Just because the parents are initiating everything doesn't mean that the bride and groom are allowed no input in the matter. Of course there are exceptions, but in most cases the parents involved do love their children and want to make sure that the couple can actually get along with each other before having them commit to anything.

My favorite scene in the whole movie is when all the dead sing in harmony to celebrate Emily on her wedding day. The way a whole community comes together to help and be with someone they feel genuine loves to is frankly heart warming. They all just knew Emily deserved to be happy. "Until the end we will fight for our dear lovely bride!"

I think that just goes to show that kids can handle way more than we as a society give them credit for, like on top of these movies I grew up on the original fairy tales with the little mermaid dying and all that, at least one character in every story being chopped up to pieces or decapitated, and I never though twice about it lol.

Honestly I first was scared to watch the movie because I saw Coraline a week or 2 before this one and that movie traumatized me to the point I was ripping off buttons from my shower curtain

there was a really popular fan theory a while back, that Emily and Victoria were sisters Emily the elder sister, fell in love with Barkis and took the money when he killed Emily, and Victoria was born several months after the death. the ages isn't mentioned but say it's a good 15-20 years between the pair so when Barkis returned, he made a beeline for the estate, but there was no money left, because he was the one who stole it.

-Something that I was able to take note of as I was re-watching the film again as an adult, was that in the theatrical cut of the film, it is never really explained why Emily knew of Victor's first name when they were never formally introduced when Emily was alive. However, in the original unedited screenplay which you can find online; there is a specific scene in which Victor is attempting to pursuade Emily to take him back to the land of the living under false pretenses (in a manner that is also highly remiscent of the final cut of the film) with the exception that she does eventually meet Mr. and Mrs. Van Dort and she seems to be instantaneously well-beloved by them and they do not seem to react adversely to her physical appearance either; as she explains that she was the late daughter and heiress to the "Merrimack" Family fortune and the Van Dorts reply that they are very fond of her parents and that they were good people. In an extended cut of the original scene, Emily also has a conversation with Victor in which she explains that she has been watching over him as his Guardian Angel in the woods whenever he would seek to have a moment of clarity or find solace in sketching; ever since she died and Victor reacts in a manner that would be considered to be highly uncharacteristic of him in comparison to the final cut of the film, as he feels "strangely touched" by her earnestness and compassion. Therefore, cannonically, her surname would be "Merrimack", which bears several connotations. In terms of terminology; a "Merrimac", (without the letter "K" at the end) is defined in the Mirriam-Webster Dictionary as a "street musician"; and it is also defined by its etymology as a surname originating from Native-American culture; (Now phonetically including the "K") which can possibly mean "Deep River Sturgeon" or "Deep Fishing Place." It is possible that Emily's family was also comprised of nouveau riche business investors/merchants just like Victor's family is; and since Victor and Emily are both prodigious musicians; they may have had far more in common than what even they believed initially.

I agree with your point about stop motion, there is just this charm, character and almost mystic to stop motion. I grew up with Wallace and Gromit and was always amazed at how they were made and loved that in some shots you could see fingerprints in the clay. My favourite stop motion animation film is Mary & Max. Highly recommend if you've never seen it. Not a kids film though so not expecting a video on it, it's just a great film more people should see.

This movie means the world to me. I adored it as a kid, and my love for it hasn't changed a bit. Back then, I was quite the logical kid, always pointing out plot holes and character flaws in movies or books. My mom had a love-hate relationship with that. Anyway, in this movie, I heard the song "Remains of the Day" for the first time, and I couldn't stop singing it for about a week straight. People usually talk about death as something sad and depressing, but as a kid, I never saw it that way. Sure, I might have felt a little sadness, but I quickly accepted its inevitability. So, I cherished this song. I vividly recall singing this song in front of my mother for the first time. She asked me to repeat myself, and I sang it again. She looked at me, half laughing, half surprised, and mostly concerned. But I just laughed and continued singing 😂

I love clay-mation. They take so long to make but I wish there were more. I always believed Emily was just wishing for her own happy ending and it didn't matter who it was with. Even when I saw younger I saw Emily as selfish. She never listened or considered Victors feelings or wants in the situation. She was kind when bushing his feelings aside but that's not a partnership/ marriage. Victor and Emily, while they both played piano, didn't have much else going on. Victoria and Victor started finishing each others sentences right after meeting. Victoria already saw them as a partnership when she helped him with the candle in the rehearsal. They just meshed well seamlessly. You should check out "The Boxtrolls" if you want something equally disturbing but with much less death lol.

When ya dead, you dead- understood?” To be clear, im not trying to be condescending. iunno he kept pointing it out and it was never a question i really asked myself bc ive always inherently understood. So if it never clicked for ya, maybe this helps?
