So fun fact about a "sequel," there actually was one... kinda.... it's a video game though. Worth checking out. It's called _The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge_ (2004) and it kinda has the same music, but the story is not half bad.

I think the best ones are James and the Giant Peach, Frankenweenie, and ParaNorman. I have a theory that Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, and Nightmare Before Christmas are all in the same universe because of the dog. Frankenweenie it was a real dog who died and was brought back to life, in Nightmare its the dog's ghost, and in Corpse Bride it's the dog's skeleton long after his reanimated body decomposed

I understand the "Why is Oogie Boogie the bad guy?" sentiment, but from what I gather he is the darkness that Halloween can bring. He messed with Santa cause it was fun, kidnapped Sally cause it was fun, and is a jerk in general because he likes screwing with people. Jack and the town do it for the sake of Halloween, because that day of the year is all about being scared. It is desired, expected, and has a lot more consent. Mr. Oognelius Boogington wants to strike fear into people's hearts for his own pleasure, not because they want to be scared.

uh, the dude has a literal torture chamber (with a heavy gambling theme, which I can't say I ever fully understood) and his lil henchman have actual nasty weapons that are clearly designed to hurt people and sing about torturing and killing Santa - in contrast there's nothing like this in Halloween town, they only scare people and sing about that. Coe to think of it, why do those three little psychopathic shits get off scot-free to have snowball fights at the end? Maybe b/c it would be hypocritical of Jack to punish them seeing as he did basically hire them to kidnap Santa. and are those like, human kids, from the real world?

Edit : To address the next person before they go and reply, this is in reference to movie or series format. Yes, there's various ancillary prequel/sequal stuff for all kinds of IP in various media formats, this included. None of which is generally relevant to your average "mainstream fan" of a movie such as NBC. Conversely, any large budget continuation or reboot would most certainly be.

I suppose I should have specified... in MOVIE FORMAT. As I stated above, there's a ton of IPs that have ancillary stories in various formats (though I focused on comics, it's certainly not limited to those) beyond their original formats. That's neither here nor there. However, when you resurrect something of this nature to bring it back to the big screen (or God forbid a streaming series), it has to live up to its predecessor, or ideally, surpass it. I just do not see that happening with this particular title. Doubtful, anyway.

The thing about Oogie Boogie is that Halloween is actually pretty wholesome to the citizens of the town. They sing "that's our job, but we're not mean". None of them are actually dangerous and they're just trying to have a good time. It says a lot however that Oogie doesn't live in town with the rest of them. He lives far away underground and only his minions can reach him. It's implied he's been banished by Jack and is only allowed to come out on Halloween like we see in the opening. His brand of horror is dangerous and, in his few minutes of screentime, he nearly killed Sally and Santa just for his own amusement. This wasn't his first warning and it's why Jack ruthlessly finished him off.

Honestly, Jack being the villain is pretty much how I always saw it. He's definitely an ironic villain as everything he's doing is coming from a desire to do something happy and nice. Which is the base moral of the story. Jack is the best at doing Halloween things, and he should stay in his lane. Despite his best intentions he puts Santa in danger and ALMOST ruins Christmas. That's where the line is as far as true villainy, Oogie wants to do bad things because he doesn't care about what happens. Jack at least has remorse and sees he was being reckless and selfish.

I don't know if you're into music theory at all, but this film actually dabbles in it a little, with every time Jack sings, and when Sally sings. There's what's called the Phrygian stank note that they both hit when they sing. It's basically a note that sounds slightly off from the rest of the notes being sung in a lyric. You can hear it in Jack's lament, and Sally's song. It's used to show their connection, even on the most basic musical level.

YES! THANK YOU! I still have my Christmas 1993 og release of the VHS tape! Henry Selicks name is more prominent, Tims is a small blip in the credits, and NO WHERE is there any Disney branding whatsoever... Not even as a small blip in the end credits. It's all under Touchstone. Not until several releases later is it called "Disney & Tim Burton's Nightmare ........" They didn't want any credit until it became super popular. Tim was working on Batman at the time as he deemed it the more prestigious and important project. They aesthetic style people credit Tim for is actually Henry Selicks and it still makes me so angry Henry doesn't get his due credit. The greatest cinematic achievement of Tim's career was actually Henry's all along. Thats why Nightmare has a vibe closer to Coraline and James and the Giant Peach than with Corpse Bride. Corpse Bride was Tim trying to imitate Henry's style. That's why it feels a bit off compared to the other 90s/2000s stop motion claymation films.

If I recall correctly in the making of the nightmare before Christmas there’s a big thing with Danny Elfman getting mad at Burton being indecisive about the music. I think that’s why Danny Elfman ended up being Jacks singing voice.

  • @angel_vii

    @angel_vii

    6 ай бұрын

@@matthewksiezak2752 I feel like I remember it being because no one could emote the songs the way Danny did himself. He was in a fairly popular band before doing film music and he really drew from his own experience for Jack's lyrics. The song Jack's Lament was about Elfmans experience being burned out with the music scene and how he felt transitioning to becoming a film composer - "There's something out there, far from my home, a longing that I've never known" so its not surprising, being such personal lyrics, he wasn't satisfied with anyone elses emoting.

10/10 for the Kingdom Hearts references. Anyone else in the mood to play KH2 after watching this, especially with battle theme being played in the background? 😆 Funny enough, KH is what got me into this movie and love the characters. I had only seen the very beginning of the movie multiple times. It’s only in the last few years I finally sat down and watched it fully with my kids. I can see why a lot of people loved it (including me).

We all have a little Loki inside of us, and it is up to us to choose the times for mischief and times for seriousness. All in all though, I loved the video, especially the French Revolution Barbie. Oh, and there is an amazing cover of the Oogie Boogie song by a group named Voiceplay that I really love and the Nightmare Before Christmas all in all is a decent musical movie. The music especially is great with its accopaniment and vocals from all the talented people who worked on it.

The trailer for this movie is more infused in my brain than the actual movie. When I was a tiny chap and I would fly over to Toronto to stay with my grandma the room I slept in had a grimy old crt tv and only a few channels to watch. One of those channels, for whatever reason, only showed movie trailers and they would loop every 20 minutes or so. The Nightmare Before Christmas, Thinner, and a trailer for one of the Wherewolf in Paris movies are forever a part of me because of it.

I absolutely love this movie. I adore the aesthetic, I think it is really cute and charming in a halloween-y way. Like it’s spooky but in a really fun and wholesome way. I love the songs, the silliness of it. Like come on, I even put a screenshot of the “nice work, bone daddy” as my work laptop background for a bit, that quote is so funny. I even made a full costume of Oogie Boogie for our office Halloween (and became the talk of the party because of it). My home country has never really celebrated Halloween and it only started changing in the last few years when I was already grown up, but it is no joke one of my favourite if not my top 1 favourite holiday now. My love for Halloween is fuelled by my love for the movie and vice versa in a perpetual motion sort of deal. I just love how fun the holiday is and it’s something I think is super important as an adult. I would never want to stop having my silly little fun, even when working an office job.

And I'm like, how often was she throwing gifts at him that he had to put this together for her. And the thought that he put it together FOR HER is just... Pumpkin King , more like Oblivious King or do this kind of thing for all your friends? Also, there is technically a prequel but it's in comic book form. It's about Jack and Oogie when they were kids competing for the Pumpkin King title. Zero also has comic book adventures and earlier this year, Disney released a book about Sally. The reason Oogie is the true villain is because he used to have his own bug themed holiday, that he doesn’t have control over anymore. So he instead fit right into Halloween town and was banished into his lair after trying to actually kill in order to replace Halloween with “Crawloween.” Actually, he most likely killed and ate the parents of his henchmen, hence why they seem so happy at the end of the movie.

When I was a kid, I would watch this every Halloween AND Christmas. I actually wasn’t scared … except when Oogie Boogie disintegrates into bugs at the end. *shudders* I always took the film being about Jack wanting to appreciate Christmas but accidentally appropriates it bc he doesn’t have context and is an outsider. Jack doesn’t mean to cause harm, he just can’t help but impose his context of Halloween Town onto everything else and can only see the most surface level parts of Christmas Town. It’s almost like a metaphor for cultural appropriation. But Oogie Boogie wants to harm others and enjoys it, which makes him the real villain. Although if I watched it now I would probably be super annoyed w Jack not even remotely listening to Sally’s warnings and just going forward with his plan and assuming he knew best. But I haven’t seen this film in a verrrrrrry long time.

With leaves for stuffing instead of cotton. Her design is a callback to the Raggedy Ann dolls if not mistaken. The stitching even resembles the doll, with a touch of Frankensteins Montser detail tossed in.
