$970 billion 2022 profits from the 10 worst companies is easy to find out. Could you please get an accurate figure of the tax breaks these 10 companies received in 2022? I would like to see what % of annual profits achieved was because of taxpayers funding. Exxon Mobil received more than$1.8 (BILLION) in taxpayer funded subsidies, they also got billions for research and development into carbon capture projects that use more fossil fuels planning and implementing them with higher cost than the no brainer solutions of planting a trillion trees! Oh crap I forgot Bill Gates said planting trees will not help!!! That is total bullshit! He means planting that amount of trees will not financially benefit the funders, so it's a waste of time because no profit can be made!

I noticed all the "net-zero" claims a while ago and started wondering what they meant by that too, so I did some research and basically came to the conclusion that it means "let's go on producing huge amounts of greenhouse gasses and hope we find some magic bullet to offset it, because we don't want to actually REDUCE emissions."

It means that they're going to continue regardless until the economics of petroleum become more costly than their alternatives. Period. You can't fight the economics of the situation with good intentions or pie in the sky ambitions. Many before you have tried with more causes than I have time or memory to count. All of them have since become extinct or so marginalized they might as well be. Now you can stop poopooing the ONE set of people actually buckling up & doing something about it or you can sit around waiting forever for a political train to carry you to your promised land while everything else catches fire around you. Pick one.

Figure out where your priorities & resourcies are better invested. Is some progress better than no progress? Can you find it within yourself to not have to approve of the method but still help achieve (or at least not block) the result? There's a lot that's going to have to be plugged in to get this all under control. A lot of it is going to be via methods you may or may not 100% like. Chances are there will be a LOT of it you wont like, but if the goal is important enough to you than the means, you can learn to tolerate it. WTF is wrong with you people? You act like unless everyting is done your exact burger king way the world must burn. It's fucking retarded.

My take from some of the "green" ads was, at least for the oil companies, their "We're implementing processes to reach net zero" is only aimed at their operations (if they're even going to do that). They are still planning on delivering (and, in some cases, expanding) a product that is the number one source of carbon.

Agree. However if a company has a Net-zero target through the SBTi, it actually means they need to reduce their majority of their emissions. Not a lot of companies have this, but something to keep in mind. :)

Reducing your expansion will be net negative on it, they just want to be net zero on the change of the growth(and keeping emissions high as long as possible), if governments wanted to stop the climate change carbon trading wouldn't have been a thing, there wouldn't have been a loophole of capturing a gram of sulphur (by you purposefully releasing it to capture it later) in exchange for a ton of carbon released for free.

Yes and the form and type of manufacturing they are profitably involved in. Something for the use of grants or government contracts isn't exactly on the same playing field as those that work years if not decades developing the conditions to potentially profit from their efforts especially given all the political "BS" needed to wade through.

When I look at old pictures of London when I lived there over fifty years ago and see that all the roofs were black from soot and filth. And now, when I see the videos of London and all the roofs are white including the dome of St. Pauls, I can see the future has brightened amazingly and I suspect will continue to do so.

And then consider that all the world’s sea-going vessels (about 50,000 of them) were in 2020 forced to switch to low-sulphur bunker oil, you can imagine how much cleaner the atmosphere has become. Indeed it’s now so clean that many believe it’s affecting the climate by letting more sunlight heat the oceans.

A slight bit of more sunlight is preferable to a lot bit more carbon or sulphur in the atmosphere, especially since the hypothesis of sulfuric clouds and their supposedly underestimated influence on ocean temperatures is new and undersupported while carbon's influence on global temperatures is well known and accepted, even by the scientists who propose the sulfur cloud hypothesis. Indeed, James Hansen is one of the most vocal proponents of radical decarbonization. It's odd to take his divisive hypothesis at face value but regard the accepted theory in his field he himself is a proponent of and, consciously or not, underplay it's importance.

We’ve changed all the process heating in our manufacturing process from natural gas fired furnaces to electric heating. We did this without customer or local authority mandate or requirements. The customers are more than happy to find, when they send out their “sustainability surveys” that we are no longer using fossil fuel for process heating. However, they continue to insist we must meet prices from competitors who use less expensive fuel fired processes and don’t want to discuss the price increase we would need to impose if we were to sign up for renewable energy to run our processes. So, at no cost to them, they get to include our process “greenery” in their overall supply data while blocking our path to the next level getting away from dependence on coal fired electric power. Pretty slick, eh?

Well, it's all about incentives and punishment in capitalism. As long as asshole behavior is rewarded by the system, and no good deed goes unpunished, not much will change. A CO2 tax (and yes, IMHO even pollution certificate trade to avoid micromanagement by governments) is a step in the right direction to punish unwanted behavior and incentify wanted behavior. But governments need to make sure it doesn't kill the lower middleclass and below, by reducing the financial burden on average people elsewhere, financed by the CO2 tax. A man can dream...

This is because getting a good ESG score is all about compliance and risk management - so you get points for actually complying with regulations you should comply with anyway, but it doesn't matter if what your company does is fundamentally high-carbon (like Macdonalds or a fossil-fuel-extractor), nor do you get points for doing something helpful (like making only electric cars or bikes). There was a good volts podcast about this madness in July 2023. ESG does not do what most people think it does, and fossil fuel companies love it because they can get good ratings without fundamentally changing anything about what they do.

There have been several old physicists of high standing over the last 20 years who know bugger all about climate science but have decided they know better than all the people who do actually have relevent expertise. His PhD thesis was about sneaking up on observations of the cosmic microwave background radiation. He has studied climate change, and made climate observations, exactly as much as any other jackass you meet on Main St. His data-free reflexive denial is religiously motivated and in no way special.

Let's begin by removing all subsidies from these companies, starting with the egg, dairy, meat, and fish industries; use the savings to protect workers in those industries and subsidize foods at the consumer and farmer level. Kraft, Tyson, Cargill, and others don't need subsidies, but some humans could really use a lower grocery bill.

I recently questioned one of our senior State Senators in North Carolina about his opposition to solar panels being promoted by our 'regulated utility,' Duke Energy, named in your presentation. The bill he introduced was to require the company to set aside, ahead of the build, all the funds necessary to fully remove and recycle the panels and restore all the land used for the solar farm before they would allow any new one ones to be permitted. Normally money would be set aside from revenue over the life of the operation to do this, as opposed to all money up front. Fossil fuel plants "are not" required to do the same (no surprise there). The reason, I believe, is to offset another law in NC where the utility is required to provide the cheapest source of power from available sources. When solar and wind became less expensive, the legislators who were beholden to the fossil fuel industry started "gaming the system," by adding costs to the solar installations. An early attempt (which met with some success) was requiring the company to accept large quantities of Turkey feathers from that vast statewide industry, and find a way to burn it for fuel. (no joke!) Duke has installed large solar farms throughout the Carolinas and are reworking the grid to create a distributed network to allow sources other than power plants to put power on our grid. They also have large wind farms across the midwest and recently earned a Federal license to build a wind farm at Long Bay off the coast of NC. They have shut down a number of coal plants, committing to have all shut down by 2040. Unfortunately, they are replacing some with gas turbines to comply with the law (the latter of which is certainly no net zero solution). Unfortunately, with the system gamed, solar is more costly than gas turbines. (go figure!) Not everyone can afford solar panels on our homes, but it is reasonable for us to do our part by using less energy... and certainly challenge our elected officials who are undermining efforts to decarbonize. In the interim, I expect you will find net zero continuing to be mentioned in their literature. At least I hope so. Certainly a term we need to keep in front of the public. And certainly we can look at the bigger picture instead of a simple word count in literature to determine who the real culprits are in our global narrative.

India and China have a new coal fired plant going on line each week for the next 30 years, besides the ones they already operate. No other tactic to save the climate comes close when you look at the numbers.

I love the TV commercials by oil companies that talk about them reaching net zero "in their operations". Has anyone ever said that is what they want? The problem really isn't the amount of greenhouse gases released to get their products from the ground and to the end user. The problem is the greenhouse gases released by using their products. The commercials are clearly designed to mislead people that want to be fooled or aren't looking closely. In a vacuum the pledge is better than nothing but if they are then going to say, "look how much we care about this" then maybe it's not.

It's not perfect but it's a lot better than you might think. Ten to twenty percent of oil that comes out of the ground is used to... get oil out of the ground, refine it, ship it, etc. Net zero on the operations end would be equivalent to a 10-20% drop in oil use. Yes it's greenwashing to a degree but it's not nothing.

In the mid 90's I tried to invest in Green Companies. Every bank or financial institution laughed me out of their office when I told them what I WOULD NOT invest in. Every bad thing for the planet is being backed by people who don't look at where their money is being invested. WE MUST CARE and take it into our own hands to stop giving our money to the bad guys. Every time someone cashes a royalty check from a mining or oil company they are giving these companies carte blanche to do whatever they want.

One U.K. bank that I can think of (Co-Op) made a selling point of investing only in 'green' companies. Within a very few years that bank had to close down most of its branches.

It's important to call out greenwashing, but also important to highlight those companies and countries where it's not 100% greenwashing! It's especially important for the developed countries to enforce compliance and this can best be done by co-operation across industrial sectors and across nations. COP resolutions have to have teeth - i.e. censure and sanction regimes for those actors that don't comply with whatever co-operation is agreed. It reminds me of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaties in the 20th century, where the partners agreed to "mutually Trust but verify" and followed through with those agreements😀

Great video as ever, Dave, but can I mention that there is a good alternative to selling out of all the shares in one's portfolio that are seen as egregious climate offenders. If you are a big institution you could insist that your fund manager actively engages with said companies to get them onto a better track. Big pension funds and big fund managers have a lot of clout and they can use it to good effect in shareholder meetings and in on going dialogue with management. Selling is also valid, but if you sold out of every carbon heavy / hypocritical company in favour of green businesses today, you would end up with quite a concentrated and undiversified savings portfolio.

This is one of the best videos you've done with a combination of information and action. Thank you.

The pension fund thing is another angle everyday people can use to apply pressure. Folks fortunate enough to have built up some wealth by now can tell the companies managing their wealth to invest in things that help solve the climate crisis instead of making it worse. I'd also argue that with the system we have in place, where the rich tend to get richer and the poor tend to stay poor, people with wealth have a moral obligation to apply this kind of pressure since they're the ones who have the opportunity to. People without wealth simply don't have this opportunity.

To be fair in the us we dont have small trucks because emissions standards make it cheaper to make bigger ones. Lowering greenhouse gas restrictions on light duty trucks could reduce overall co2 emissions if people end up driving smaller vehicles.

All the rules and goals stuff is in defiance of the fact that that is exactly a primary goal of LLCs, whose very activity is to figure out a way to do their activities around rules systems that communities use to constrain them. The best thing that CAN be done is to legally establish a practice of maximal vigilantism to be acceptable against LLCs, as they need to be an exception because of their very state of existence. Until every citizen has a superior right of law enforcement to the LLCs themselves, they will continue to lie and break rules as, other than economies of scale, that is the only way they have to make money, and economies of scale can be managed by community organized utilities, so there is NO excuse for an LLC other than remnants of monies stolen in previous generations.

Maybe it would make a good video to look at what some of the best companies are doing. (It would certainly improve my mood!!) I see that there is only one company in the 'energy' category that meets gets into the 'aligned with Paris..' column, which is the Danish company Orsted. I'd like to know what they are doing right compared to the others. Another excellent video, btw. Love ya style!

​@@earthsystemThey've moved on from ignoring the issue, then claiming it's a hoax. Now they publicly admit it real and important. Next stage is videos like Dave's that call out the hypocrisy. Corporations don't like bad publicly or legal challenges. We all know it's going too slow but we are getting there. Just hope there is still a livable planet when this is done. Have you any constructive suggestions?

Companies who have a Science-based target through the SBTi are reducing their emissions much quicker than the other companies as well. So a bit of additional good news there as well.

Just about any company that contracts with China (and likely any number of 3rd world countries) will do lousy on environmental and carbon sequestration concerns. This is why who we buy from is most important. The best way to reduce carbon is to buy from farmers who use restoration agriculture methods (sustainable is a big green-washing term, and regenerative can vary a lot as well). We can now buy eggs from pastured chickens that use chicken tractors. THAT IS PROGRESS. Plqhting trees in the mountains, and using localized rainwater harvesting using onsite materials, starting in the foothills will help draw carbon into the soil and increase green biomass. It will recharge freshwater supplies, reclaim land, create more resources, remediate challenged areas, lessen the effects of catastrophic weather events, lessen losses, as part of low tech, durable solutions. Pushing for more freight and passenger rail (in the US we especially need to expand rail in the West and Midwest) especially in larger countries. High speed rail is a money pit without other rail to support it. In Switzerland they emphasize rail travel that the rich want to ride, and it works. The arrival and departure times are crisp, stations are pleasant and trains adequately comfortable (they also have restrooms, wifi, and avoid the waiting times of airplanes...). We need to press for high-alue improvements, instead of pushing for "innovative tech" that merely plugs an increasing number of holes, at a larcenous prices...

Great episode Dave. The SBTI scheme is really important in clearly defining , measuring & reporting how companies are performing against the agreed targets & plans that they have laid out. I work for Aviva & am really pleased that they have taken such a leading role in getting this set up, so they can be confident that they are doing all they can to mitigate their own climate impacts (they have been carbon neutral since 2006-ish). Where you Pension (and banking) investments are held, are a brilliant way to force the direction of progress away from fossil fuels (and undesirable categories), to more sustainable alternatives.

It's not quite this simple though. Chevron and BP have invested significant money (albeit, not enough) in clean energy projects like the Eavor loop. I think the focus needs to be on pressuring them to do more good things and fewer bad things with their money and influence.

BP invested $10 million in Eavor, which for a company that turned over $230 BILLION last year is not a significant amount of money by any stretch of the imagination. They spent $211 million to rebrand themselves from BP to bp (uncapitalised letters) in order to appear friendlier, greener, and less threatening... They are a company that clearly cares more about appearing good than doing the right thing. IMO the focus needs to be on forcing these companies to do better through legislation because they sure as hell aren't going to do it on their own.

Hi Dave good content, here in NZ we are still on target with the methane emissions . Bio waste produces about 51% methane CH4 natural gas which at the rubbish waste sights Is used for electrical generation also farm cow bio waste is also used to heat and power vehicles The carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are also filtered out before burning the gas
