Big Oil, Big Lies and Big Al...

World leaders just gathered at the UN in New York to discuss the climate, ahead of the main COP 28 climate conference coming up in November 2023. The president of that event is also the CEO of one of the world's largest oil and gas producers. So how, in the name of all things holy, can we possibly expect to make any progress there? This video has a couple of suggestions.

I think Al Gore gives us a pretty good idea how it happens in this video. The fossil fuel companies have been sending larger and larger delegations to each COP, and the delegates decide who their president will be. Meanwhile the same companies are "advising" politicians privately. They've used money and sheer numbers to capture the decision making machinery.

Then construction of roadways, car-dependent housing and commercial development, pay to drive, pay to park, car maintenance, repair, etc. Near last on the list are petroleum industries because the other interests don't care how we power our cars, trucks, ships, airplanes and motorized big boy toys. Yes, a very important message. It's a really great video.(Thanks Dave, this is one of your best) We must all rail against the corporate greed & inept, captured leadership. It's the same here in Australia. Many people believed the Labor party winning the federal election in 2022 would be better for action on climate change/emissions reduction...because they believed the greenwash spin during the election campaign. But Labor politicians actually said well before the election that they would continue their support for the fossil fuel industry, & the huge expansion of their coal & gas exports, for decades. And I feel no solace thinking planet Earth will be fine, because it's not just our own demise at stake. There are thousands of species of plants & animals that would be wiped out, along with us. We have to demand change. The climate emergency requires an emergency response...not mass expansion of fossil fuel business-as-usual.

Old technologies reach a point where there is either no way to improve upon it or that it becomes so expensive to do so no one can afford the products produced. So pairing new technologies with other positive outcomes such as passive energy, solar, wind, and geothermal, as ways of replacing dirty energy create new jobs and new innovations that further create more new jobs. Yeah. While this is a global issue it was a mistake to make it a UN driven process. It needed to be lower level - nations and nations working in alignment. It would have been "easy" on a global basis to start with electrical power generation. These are, for the most part, public utilities that serve the common good. They are highly regulated and fall under significant state or regional control. The US could have mandated a 50% reduction away from coal, oil and gas on an urgent timetable with additional sun-setting to follow. New technologies could have been developed and shared with other nations.

Brilliant! As a rather ancient chemical engineer, I remember the question being asked in combustion engineering class whether the IR absorption of CO2 etc meant that increasing fossil fuel burning would lead to overall heating of the planet. The lecturer responded with another question: "Do you want to pursue a successful career in chemical engineering? Then don't ask that question". Svante Arrhenius had this pretty well nailed before 1900. The fossil fuel industry have been well aware since then.

@@jpdemer5 You misunderstood my point. I'm not talking about falling into the trap, but what is lacking from the current international efforts are ways to deal with the damage that has already been done, on top of trying to limit future damage (again, we cannot avert future damage anymore due to the delay tactics employed in the past and today, but we can for sure limit the potential of what damage can be done from now on). Nobody seems to talk about what to do to mitigate floods, fires, storms and their effects we're already seeing today and which will worsen in the near future for sure. The whole discussion is still centered on the delusional idea that we can somehow "prevent" the climate crisis from happening while it already is unfolding. How do we deal with the damage that is already being done? Not the hypothetical even worse damage (which might soon enough look very conservative compared to then-reality), but the one that already is happening? What do we do about that? This side of the argument is entirely absent from the whole discussion. We need our governments not only to commit to ambitious action (not plans or goals, but action) _and_ to preparation and damage control surrounding what is already lost. Instead, we're still talking about "reaching" a "1.5 Kelvin goal", which in completely infeasible to meet. If we're lucky, and that is a very big IF, we might end up with 3 Kelvin by 2100. 1.5 to 2 Kelvin by 2050 is a realistic expectation. What are we doing about the damage that is done just by that alone, which already is beyond our control as we cannot undo the sins of the past?

All of these were done based on financial calculation and something that is beyond the reach of the majority of Americans. There is more I could do but there is little financial sense to eat into retirement to do more, it's just so expensive. This is the reality we live with and virtually everything we do will create more pain for the people we need to win over. We rail on "Al" but it's true, as long as those resources are there, just waiting to be extracted and used, they will be. We can't stop SA from pumping and most of the developing world from using that oil. Until there is a solution to the worldwide demand, most other efforts are futile since some country will provide, if not SA then it will be Russia. To do your bit, do what I have been doing the last 20 years. I had an ICE car (and still have) but I never drove it that much. Only for bulky shopping and a lot of groceries, or longer trips. Mostly I rode my bicycle. I went to the shops 3 km away by bicycle for small orders. Also went to work by bicycle up to like 10 km from home (weather permitting). Also I have been freezing every winter only using a heater for a few minutes at a time (after a shower). I rugged up instead. In bed I used a plastic soda bottle full of hot tap water (straight out of the faucet). Lasts longer and no need to use power to boil the water. More efficient and cheap way to stay warm (in or out ofbed). I never use an AC Only a fan. If I sleep with a fan I often get cold on a hot night. I just angle the fan right and I don't get the problem. And I'm still doing it and I'm more fit cos of it too. And imagine if everyone else did the same (within reason). How much better off we may have been by now? So I urge everyone to try and do the same (with me) for the next 20 years. I haven't really suffered (thanks to my fan and hot water bottle). Love you, and I love you even more if you can try and do your bit (like you obviously seem to want to). Cos it's not that hard to do this. With this (along with the new fangled breakthroughs) we can do this. But we have to do both, the stuff I do...plus the new inventions (like on "Just Have a Think"). ❤

While filled with major points, at about minute 11:45 in this video there comes an often overlooked major point: the financial system, specifically the Equities markets are a major obstacle to change. While not defending the fossil fuel oligarchs greed for a milli-second, corporate shareholders want their profits NOW, and not watered down by the need for a healthy environment. If this isn't somehow addressed, the number and value of the lawsuits that will emerge from pension funds, insurance companies, et al will be impressive should a shift from profits to survival take hold.

Answer this as a serious question - why would the fossil fuel companies promise to invest in alternative energy or carbon capture ? They do so to avoid or to defer regulations or taxes that reduce consumption. It's a PR campaign to improve their image and basically a ruse to insulate them from having to face changes in the status quo of ever increasing fossil fuel consumption.

The earth will be just fine, lets not panic, that doesn't help at all. The west is doing pretty good, if you look at Europe and the US, we have largely stopped increasing emissions, and the ball is rolling in the opposite direction, EU has gone from around 5000 million tons of CO2 per year around the turn of the millennium to around 3500 now and dropping faster year by yeah, the USA is somewhat lagging behind Europe, going from about 7000 million tons of CO2 to 6000 million tons of CO2 in the same time. Could it be better? For sure, but looking at 2030 targets, we are ahead in quite a few metrics, and we are increasing the rollout of renewables and EVs faster than expected. The tipping point is pretty close, if we kill our entire financial system we are doomed though. China on the other hand has gone from 3000 million tons per year at the turn of the millennium to 14 000 million tons of CO2 per year in 2022, and there is no slowdown in sight with 2 new coal power plants opening per week. Another interesting factoid is that if we had kept developing nuclear power instead of going into coal and gas, we would've had half the level of manmade CO2 in the atmosphere that we do currently. We will likely meet targets for 2030 early in the EU, possibly the US as well, China and India will destroy all of that progress many times over though, I suggest we try to convince them to build nuclear as a stop gap measure to cut emission levels before 2040. We also have carbon capture coming, right now it's nothing to write home about, but there are facilities opening that will scrub at least 3 million ton in the next 2 years, and that is just the start with a lot of research ongoing into effective hydrocarbon capture.

What's really crazy is that we went so far into fossil fuels even once we understood how they were formed and therefore knew them to be a clearly finite resource. That was insane behaviour when we only had nuclear and hydro as alternatives, and its infinitely crazier and stupider to cling to them now even if we didnt know about the damage. Bear in mind that by the 30s we had heat pumps for fridges - the coolant was a horror show but the tech was always a heat pump. So we never actually had to switch to gas for heating in the first place we *could* have stayed on coal for a bit and switched straight to heat pumps, without all that gas infratructure investment. I get that its easy to say that with hindsight - but by the late 70s scientists were raising the alarm bell and we definitely had the tech working well then, and by the end of the 80s had seen what the refrigerants were doing and stopped using that (mostly). Weve had now literally 50 years where we knew and could have done something and weve stuck with harmful stuff we *knew" was harmful. So yeah, after all that its REALLY going to hurt for a generation or teo just to stop the next hundred years being some of the hardest humanity have ever faced.

Coal fired power plants are usually about 30% efficient, and then some of that electricity is lost in transmission. So unless heat pumps are able to run at 300-400% efficiency they would have been producing as much or more CO2 than just burning the coal for heat in a high efficiency furnace. Considering that the US is still working on phasing out coal power plants, and gas heating is much less CO2 intensive than coal heat, almost no heat pumps would have had a positive impact on CO2 emissions until quite recently. Also, while heat pumps have been around for quite some time, the two stage heat pumps needed to keep going in really cold temperatures instead of switching over to the very expensive and CO2 intensive resistive heating have only been around for a short time. While some areas should be doing more to switch over to heat pumps, there are also areas where temperatures get quite cold and the grid isn't too clean where making the switch would be counterproductive until after the grid is cleaned up.

*Summary* - 0:00 The video discusses the speeches made by global leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which took place ten weeks before the annual global climate meeting known as the Conference of Parties (COP). - 0:20 COP28 is the twenty-eighth year that all nations on the planet gather to agree on measures to keep global temperature rises below 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. - 0:55 The President of this year’s COP meeting is Sultan Al Jaber, who is also the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Chief Executive of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). - 1:37 Al Jaber recently wrote a piece for the American global business magazine Fortune, calling for more urgent action to address the climate crisis. He states that by 2030, developing nations will need $2.4 trillion per year in climate finance to adapt to the devastating consequences of a rapidly warming atmosphere. - 4:36 The video criticizes the hypocrisy of Al Jaber's call for climate action while his company, ADNOC, plans to spend more than $100 billion on new oil and gas production by 2030. - 9:00 The International Monetary Fund reported that explicit and implicit subsidies for fossil fuels reached over $7 trillion in 2022, which is nearly three times as much as Al Jaber's estimated amount needed for climate finance. - 9:56 The video suggests that instead of providing these subsidies to fossil fuel companies, the money could be used to support developing nations and fund the global expansion of renewables. - 11:14 Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, calls for more transparency to hold governments and corporations accountable for their commitments to address climate change. He also emphasizes the need for political leaders to look beyond their elected term and invest in the present and future. - 14:33 The video concludes with a call for viewers to be angry at those who knowingly contribute to the climate crisis and make a profit doing so. Negative News: 1. 0:55 Sultan Al Jaber, the President of this year’s COP meeting and the Chief Executive of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), is calling for urgent climate action while his company plans to spend more than $100 billion on new oil and gas production by 2030. 2. 0:20 Despite 28 years of the Conference of Parties (COP), global temperature rises are still on track to exceed 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. 3. 9:00 The International Monetary Fund reported that explicit and implicit subsidies for fossil fuels reached over $7 trillion in 2022, a huge amount that could be used for climate action but is instead supporting the industries contributing to climate change. Positive News: 1. 11:14 Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is calling for more transparency and accountability from governments and corporations in their commitments to address climate change. 2. 1:37 Al Jaber's call for more urgent action to address the climate crisis acknowledges the need for $2.4 trillion per year in climate finance for developing nations by 2030. This recognition of the scale of the problem could prompt further action. 3. 9:56 The video suggests that the subsidies currently given to fossil fuel companies could be redirected to support developing nations and fund the global expansion of renewables, presenting a potential solution to the climate finance problem. 4. 14:33 The video's call to action encourages viewers to hold those who knowingly contribute to the climate crisis accountable, fostering a sense of responsibility and urgency.
