In this review we will test the new Coros Pace 3. The successor to what is probably the most popular watch that Coros made so far, the Pace 2. In this video we will focus on systematically testing the heart rate tracking performance, GPS tracking accuracy and we will also take a look at the sleep stage tracking, so you can decide if the Coros Pace 3 is the watch for you. And, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of this lightweight and relatively affordable watch from COROS. Let’s get started!
Let’s start with the design. The PACE 3 is marketed as a very lightweight watch, weighing 30 grams with a Nylon band and 38 grams with a Silicone band. This means it is very lightweight, but still about a gram heavier that the Pace 2 , which weighs in at 29 and 36 grams for the Nylon and Silicone band variants respectively. The band width of Pace 3 is 2 mm wider at 22mm compared to the Pace 2’s 20 mm. But these are relatively small details, a bigger change is the addition of a touch screen to the Pace 3, which was not part of the Pace 2. The 1.2 inch touch screen display includes an always-on mode and a night mode.
But, what is far more important to me is the sensor set. The Pace 3 includes the next-gen HR sensor, with 5 LEDs, 4 photodetectors, whilst still having a slightly reduced casing size compared to the Pace 2. It now also includes an SpO2 sensor for blood oxygen tracking, which the Pace 2 did not have, and importantly the satellite chipset was also changed. The Pace 3 supports all five satellite systems, but the major improvement is that the Pace 3 now supports L1 + L5 dual frequency while the Pace 2 didn't. Just to very briefly explain what this means: L1 is more or less the standard frequency used by most smartwatches. However, this single-frequency data can be affected by atmospheric distortions, leading to inaccuracies. The ability of the Pace 3 to also use the L5 frequency means it has access to additional satellite signals that help correct the inaccuracies stemming from atmospheric effects on L1 signals. In essence, using two frequencies reduces the error rate and offers users more precise location tracking and thus theoretically more accurate data for speed, distance, and route during any activity.

His videos are good, but a sample size of one is a really huge issue for being able to determine the accuracy of the watches he reviews. Differences in wrist diameter, skin colour, body fat, body hair, and other factors mean that the accuracy he gets may not be what someone else can expect. Answering these kinds of questions are what good science does.

I'd love to see you do a big body composition scale review/comparison. I _know_ they aren't "accurate" per-say, but I'm sure some of them are more reliable and consistent than others. Having one would still be a lot better than forgoing tracking body comp metrics entirely. A lot of us simply aren't going to go get tested regularly for body composition. I'd trust your opinion on a reliable one at least.

The good thing is that I can connect a Polar or Coros arm strap to the watch and will get better HR recording by weight lifting. I think its a small thing you should add to your tests, as I would in general not use the watch, but a strap, and if I can connect it to the app of the provider or the watch itself it will get much better results in weight lifting.

Thanks for the video. Just curious. When the line deviated a little bit, was that around taller buildings or passing under bridges? I’m asking because my Pace 2 will sometimes have issues around very tall buildings (which is normal) but I’m wondering if the Pace 3 improves on it with its dual frequency.

There is any problem using fitness trackers/smartwatches/smartbands on the inner side of your wrist (palm side)? I mean, how bad is it (if bad at all) to the accuracy of the device? Do you have a word on this issue? Maybe you can consider doing a video testing it, would be great!

I see that you show both the accuracy of the total of each sleep stage tracked by smart watches and the accuracy of the tracked timings of each sleep stage. I test run 400 meters track with Pace 3, on standard run mode, standard GPS mode,. The first 400 meters was quite accurate, then it get a bit inaccurate from there. Some lap reported 410 meters, some 420 meters. I end up with 5.2km, for 12.5 loops which is supposed to be 5km. I will test again with track run mode. My 7 years old Epson SF810, give me very accurate and consistence distance of 398 to 402 meters. It does not have track run mode, just plain run. This old watch is accurate to 0.001km. I am guessing this is the reason Coros Pace 3 is giving a significant higher distance reading since it is accurate to 2 decimal point, and round up to ceiling.

It would be good if you did a LONGER run test or more running as it is much easier to get reasonable GPS tracking on a bike as you travel greater distances between recording data points. Running tracks are usually much more wiggly compared to cycling as the distance covered between the data recording points are much smaller. All reviewers, including this one, compare the distances measured against another watch but what would be more useful is which watch measures more accurate distances rather than which watch's distance measurements match up to other watches. It is not enough to state that the Coros' recorded distance matches the Apple watch or the Garmin watch as it could be that NONE of them are correct. Likewise, matching up the HRM between watches & a chest strap may not be valid. Does the chest strap measurement match that of a medical device? Since some of the testing is indoor cycling, a medical EKG device would be feasible, so a comparison of the the watches optical HRM to a medical EKG device would be interesting. Of course if the POLAR chest strap has already been compared to an EKG device and has done well, then the POLAR strap is certainly a VALID REFERENCE. Get out there and run!😉

An updated test for Huawei GT3 Pro, pretty please! :) Since it's been a year, and I'm a potential buyer, I'm curious if their updates have improved anything, especially in the sleep department. Cheers!

I believe it's because counting steps is not something the typical fitness enthusiast customer of a garmin/coros is bothered about. They would be more keen about measuring their performance through HR, pace, etc.

Oef, good question! I like the Garmin ecosystem slightly better, but the performance of the Pace 3 seems somewhat better, and potentially better priced. I would want to retest the FR255 though 😊

In my opinion they perform similar at this price point. I think the coros ecosystem is more user friendly/easier to get a hang of. But the AMOLED displays on the Garmins are pretty 😍

It's honestly a gadget, you mesure blood pressure not in real time (except with putting a needle directly in an artery 😅) , usually twice in the same position. A reliable blood pressure machine is 20$. An omron one for consumers only 40$ and last a nearly a life time. Worth the investement. High BP can be dangerous, at rest. Cheers 🤞

@alexvikendi1768 yeah, but the advantage is the "carry anywhere" feature the watch provides. Those who track their blood pressure constantly know the pain in the ass that it is to carry the omron everywhere. It is quite uncomfortable. So having it available in such light weight can be very beneficial

@@Mau365PP even if it has blood pressure that doesn't mean it's reliable. Even wrist blood pressure are allowed to be 10+- . But In my opinion I would get the wrist one if you want that feature on the watch it will for sure be unreliable.

I have the Fenix 7 and have been testing it side by side against the Pace 3. The overall pace is comparable. BUT if you do workouts that require hitting certain paces, the Pace ironically has lagged by around 10seconds from my Fenix. If you don’t do workouts that require you to hit paces tho, it would be worth making the switch!
