The Garmin Venu 3 and 3s are surprisingly well-rounded smartwatches, and I would have no problem recommending them to some of my friends. However, my systematic testing did reveal a number of limitations of this watch, and these might be deal breakers for some of you. In this video we are going to scientifically test the heart rate tracking performance, sleep stage tracking accuracy, GPS consistency and oxygen saturation measurements of the Garmin Venu 3. This is the video many of you have been waiting for, so let’s get to it!
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. In this video I will dive straight into the testing. However, if you want to find out more about the detailed specs of this watch, Garmin has a very good website that lists all details. The only really important thing to mention is that the Venu 3 has Garmin’s latest generation sensor set. But that’s all I wanted to say before we get to the systematic testing, and I want to start off with the heart rate tracking performance, which I tested on myself with the Venu 3 and on Theresa with the 3s. I tested the heart rate tracking performance during a total of 7 indoor cycling workouts, 3 runs, 21 bike-rides and 10 weight lifting sessions!
But, what is my final conclusion on the Venu 3. Well, I think that it is a solid all-round watch, with pretty good heart rate tracking, decent sleep stage tracking and good GPS tracking. Only the oxygen saturation measurements disappointed me a bit. The Venu 3 also has very good battery life compared to many of the other watches out there, lasting up to 26 days, so it is really a very good all-rounder, but it also doesn’t dazzle with its performance in any particular category. So, taking all of that into account, I’d give the Venu 3: 3.5 to 4 out of 5 stars.

We need more data to conclude things... Can you ask Theresa to wear the same watch and compare? Physiology does play a major role in HR accuracy. DCR reviewed the HR and GPS and they were pretty spot on for him. That doesn't mean one of you are wrong, it just means we need more data.... As Apple watches lead your chart, why not wear the apple watch on the other wrist for every test you do, in that case we can understand more. Kudos to you :)

I received my Venu 3 yesterday (not the S), I tested it today with my Polar H10 belt on a treadmill for an hour doing interval training. The error was one beat most often, two beats less often, and three beats quite rarely. Four beats difference, I didn't see any! So if I had listened to you, I would not have bought this watch, I was wise not to. Sorry for my English, I use a translator.

I went with this watch because i wanted excellent battery life and ECG capabilities. I've been very happy with it. Yes, it was a bit spendy... But only having to charge it once every 7-10 days is very valuable to me. I don't need super perfect tracking data. General data is interesting enough for me.

Rob. Your videos are fantastic. It is interesting to see all these watches compete on features, with the validity of data almost disregarded. You are about the only one to provide information on accuracy. Thank you! A few questions - in some videos you test the step counting. Is that something no longer worth testing? Does the frequency of HR sampling matter much ? Some watches sample multiple times per second, others only every few minutes. The whitings scanwatch 2 seems interesting (and more accuracy focused?). But you were not impressed with first version. Any plans to review the scanwatch 2? Thanks for all the hard work.

@@snowyfall753maybe so. However if I’m paying over 450$ I would want a device that got hr rate right during hard exercise and at rest. @@snowyfall753I agree that general trends are really the biggest metric guiding health and fitness, and not the extreme exercises. However, if that’s the case cheaper options are available. But the offset hr means offset calories, and if there’s one simple thing ppl use fitness trackers for it’s losing weight. In that regard, not having a good measure throughout the day and for workouts means it’s difficult to accurately account for eating. Basically it’s not good for extreme athletes. Not ideal for daily tracker. And not robust enough a smartwatch for that crowd. It’s a good watch with an identify crisis

You have to account for an x-axis shift when comparing heartrates with polar. The whole curve should be allowed to be shifted left or right to maximize R2. Otherwise you can have an absolutely perfect device that lags just a few seconds, which is irrelevant to its overall performance, but will have a low R2 in your test. This is a no brainer.

@@matteobortolasi1918 this is not related only to this particular watch, just something that should be done in general to produce reliable comparisons. And it would not help for missing peaks, it would help if peaks and other features are there but slightly offset. On steep slopes, a slight shift in phase results in very high disagreement even though the curve may be the same shape.

I've tried multiple watches during my HIIT workouts (all of the watches worked well for long runs) and it turned out the Garmin Vivosmart 5 was the most precise repeatedly - likely due to having the best fit on my thin arm. It's great that you included Theresas data into your review, because the sensor precision can vary considerably between different people.

The 3S deserves it's own video because according to this video it seems to be the most accurate HR tracker on android you've ever tested, maybe only slightly beaten by the pixel 2. If the sleep tracking on the 3S is pretty good then it would be the only android contender to the pixel 2. I was really hoping for this Garmin to have better heart rate/sleep tracking since I've decided not get another Fitbit after my current Charge 4; Fitbit's business model that makes you pay a monthly fee to access a full set of your OWN data is beyond ridiculous, and their trackers aren't the most reliable either (I've had problems with mine that the laughably incompetent Fitbit support failed to address). Apple watch seems to be the best option out there, which means I'll need to keep my current iPhone 12 mini just to use the Apple watch even after I've moved back to Android, which I'm planning to do when the Samsung S24 is released!

New sensor is not the only thing that's important for HR accuracy. Strap and backplate material are also very important. one question please - for how many days did you wear this watch continuously and how does the battery life of this watch affects the continuous data gathering for a daily user versus other better graded watches that have less battery life and have to be charged more often ?

I bought the watch Venu 3, 10 days ago. And I have a problem. I have checked all the settings several times. The sound works for messages and apps, but it doesn't work when someone calls the cell phone, then the watch just vibrates without sound. I think this is a serious failure by Garmin. I am thinking whether to return the watch or contact the service. Or should I wait for an upgrade? What do you think?

Awesome video. I have issue with the Venu3 sleep tracking, similar to yours, but a lot worse. I spoke with Garmin Rep, and reported that their Awake Sensitivity is too high, maybe an option to reduce can help. They said no option for it, and said maybe I'm just super active at night, so the watch consider I am awake. I don't have those head strap to proof result, but I used Fitbit Charge 6 on same arm to get "Hopefully" same result. Fitbit shown a lot better result, closer to what I feel and remember on the awake moment or time. While the Garmin Venu3 will still show around 50% of my sleep as awake. (Fitbit consider 8% while Garmin said 50+% of the sleep duration.) I think Garmin should look at your video and really consider that they should have an option to tune down the sensitivity of Awake stage during sleep tracking. Btw, I am curious. For logging, have you tried to force it into record "Every Second"? I am thinking your delay in lower HR on workout is due to the smart logging feature delayed your recording. When it detect or consider you are in work out or such with High HR, the smart logging will move into Every Second recording. That may result in your "Delayed" compare to the chest strap.

Interesting that the 3S performed better. I’ve always bought full sized Garmins and then ended up returning them because they’re not comfortable and I’ve noticed gaps in the HR data. I’ve then bought the “S” versions and have found them comfortable and the HR data gaps disappear. I did this for the Vivoactive 4 and the Forerunner 265. My hypothesis is the lower weight and smaller size help keep the sensor in place.

The HR agreement for Theresa might be more effective due to her lack of arm hair. It could be interesting to shave the skin beneath the watch sensor to observe potential differences. Additionally, an engaging experiment could involve testing whether the sensor's performance varies with brown versus blond hair.

I'm eyeing for watches that are stylish enough to wear daily, but still have the features to support my activities like hiking, swimming, and sleep tracking. In fact, I was at a shop yesterday to try out the Venu 3 and a few other options. To me, the lack of navigation features is a strike against this watch, and now the mediocre heart rate tracking is another. Thanks for your hard work. So... Polar Vantage V3 next? 😛 I'm keeping an eye on the Suunto Race too, but I'm already hearing unflattering things about its heart rate tracking. The Vantage 3 is still an unknown to me, though I could still afford to wait for something better to come along.

Garmin needs to make this watch. It would be easy to create what you (and what I) are looking for. Take a Garmin 955 (yes the one with the MIP) and give it a new body that is more slim, minimal bezel, and stylish enough to wear daily. That watch includes all the health tracking features, includes mapping capability, and the MIP display lends itself to blending in very subtly into the background. Depending on the watch face chosen it would appear in many situations to just be a normal watch. (ie No emitting that special 'glow' that all other OLED based smarwatches give off)

One of most reliable was Wahoo and now for past years using Magene as cheapest and most reliable. As I'm considering to buy Venu 3 I would much more like to see if you would use some more professional medical grade equipment to judge accuracy.
