Intro:
I am not really a runner, cycling is more my thing, but the Garmin Forerunner 965 actually got me running. And, after using this watch for some weeks, I really started to like it. I don't know if it is just the fact that it says I have a superior VO2 max, or the fact that it has a beautiful screen; but the experience of using it made me really happy. However, as a scientist, I want to provide you with objective data on how the Forerunner 965 actually performs. So, in this video, I'll be conducting a systematic and scientific review, evaluating the performance and accuracy of the Forerunner 965. I'll be evaluating the heart rate accuracy during different exercises, testing the sleep stage tracking against an EEG device, and taking a look at the GPS tracking performance. So, if you're looking for a comprehensive and reliable review of the Garmin Forerunner 965, then you've come to the right place. Let's dive in!
The Garmin Forerunner 965 is one of Garmin’s top of the line running watches, and it shows. I personally think this is one of the most beautiful smartwatches from Garmin I have ever tested. I especially like the screen, which is a vibrant 1.4" AMOLED display. And, as I said, it has been a joy to use. That being said, the Garmin Forerunner 965 is not cheap, coming in at about 600 dollars. The question is, Is it worth that kind of money? Well this video is hopefully going to help you find out. However, in this video I do not want to focus on the looks or my subjective experience. Instead, I want to focus on the objective performance of this watch. So, I’m not going to list any specs or functionalities for you, since you can find those on Garmin’s website.

Rob, so the REAL question is...after ALL this time...WHY is the Apple Watch, still untouchable. For many of us NOT in the Apple ecosystem THAT is a question that has never really been answered. Is it a question of sensor quality, layout, and software and why do other companies produce devices that after MANY years still can't compete? None of this has ever made any sense to me and I'll sure others feel the same way.

  • @dhiltonp

Thanks for sharing your testing! I've been in the Garmin ecosystem for years (and still have no reason to change). I trust my Garmin's HR data for steady state workouts, but if I'm doing intervals I know I either need to wear a chest strap or transition the intensity over 30-60s. I'm shocked at how well some of the other watches scored. Though, when I looked at your apple watch review to see why, it looks like it largely achieves this score by simply not recording HR samples if it is not confident, while the Garmin will continue to record samples even if the data is of questionable quality.

I’m also looking forward to your review on the new Garmin devices that have its Elevate HRM V5, to see if there’s any difference from the devices that have the V4. It would also be nice to compare the metrics available on different devices. Garmin has running power, body battery, stamina, training readiness, acute/chronic load, etc. Accurate heart rate monitoring is not great if you don’t have enough battery life to monitor your body 24/7, or if you can’t convert it into more usable statistics.

@@vpnconsult Sure, except where else do you get this level of rigour? I'll take this sample over the other 'reviews' (read, advertisements) that are also an n of one with poor analysis of HR. Also, his results seem pretty reliable across sensor types (8 diode -- Huawei and Apple vs. 4 diode -- Garmin). I suppose it helps that I have similar physical characteristics so see similar results. I suppose it is probably different for other skin tones, which is why we need more samples from more diverse individuals!

@@MookieBrown-mv4zkto me it looks like what we are reading from the charts is that some watch geometries fit his wrist and usage pattern better than others. A slight improvement would be to at least use the same arm band for every watch. And yes there are actual scientific studies on the accuracy of wrist based HR sensors, of course not for every product in the market.

Hopefully you can give this same workout to the Epix Pro or Fenix Pro, so that we can have a sort of preview of what the Forerunner 975 will be with the new heart sensor. But one thing that stands out from this review is that Garmin continues to score when it comes to the UI, while Apple, supposedly the UI kings, has too much chaos and not enough integrated into a single app. In this case Apple has the hardware but Garmin, for now, still has the software. Apple Watch OS 10 will solve a lot of this but by no means not all of it.

Hi, thanks for another great analysis! I am using F255 for 8 months now, I belief it shares much of the sensors and hardware with F965. I am usually using garmin’s heart rate chest strap with it for runs and bike rides, except when commuting. Sleep tracking REM is quite a disappointment, was considering keeping Fitbit for this reason but I have not at the end. Anyway I am happy with the watch, new screens in -65 are looking amazing but the price .. cheers

I think that it is also worth noting the longevity of watches, and battery life. In the past 10 plus years, I am still on my second Garmin watch. My FR 630 still lasts over 3 weeks on a single charge with smart notifications turned on, charges super fast, and was very accurate when I was running 50 plus miles a month before kids. Along with working two jobs and smart notifications turned on. I bought it refurbished for $75, it is still phenomenal. That said, my 965 arrives today, so I am very excited to have a new watch with all of the bells and whistles, and not need the chest strap to train in HR zones!

Also, other metrics like HRV, training readiness and GPS accuracy are still topnotch when it comes to Garmin. For sleep monitoring, my opinion is that no watch will replace electrodes latched on your head while sleeping so don't rely on it too much.

Crazy results! I mostly use my Garmin Forerunner 965 for Outdoor Cycling. (Shaved area, wearing it fairly tight) and compared it to my Garmin HRM Dual Chest Strap. And riding it 7 times for more than 50km, i couldn't get it more than 3BPM off and that mostly because it is a bit slow picking it up, as you mentioned. The average Heart Rate was off every ride ±1BPM, without a direct hit. I just don't like the sleep tracking. It doesn't record naps, that's a shame!

Thanks for the great review, helped me make an informed decision. Especially liked the heart rate review with reference device. However, since GPS and mapping is an important feature in this watch perhaps you could improve this side of your reviews with a GPS reference device to see deviations. Some reviewers have reported that GPS accuracy deteriorates in city environments - could this be quantified? Also elevation tracking for mountain sports would be nice to get a reference device for since some devices are not very accurate and can create "spikes" in elevation data. I wonder if these spikes make the sports tracking performance metrics unreliable like distance travelled, calories, speed etc. In any case exceptional review!

  • @cyclingjack
    @cyclingjack7 ай бұрын

Thx for this extensive review. Garmin uses the sleep tracking to do their ‘training readiness’ , ‘stamina’ and ‘stress’ etc calculations/information. If it’s this inaccurate, that means the conclusions drawn within ‘training readiness’ and so on are also inaccurate (probably even worse). Some of the problems might be solved by using a chest strap, but then, to have more accurate data, you’ll need to wear one at nights as well. Another thing, i own an old apple watch model, good to see it’s more accurate than all of the garmins. I am using it with ‘always-on-screen’ off, the battery will last me 2 days, even when being at lower capacity (84%) these days. Not even close to garmins battery usage, but not as worse as some say here. Imho apples (lol) and oranges, as one is a sports watch and the other a smart watch. I hoped the 965 would be a food replacement for my old apple watch, but now i am not so sure.

Thanks for the very thorough research. But it would be much more useful to do this for swimming, along with the accuracy of distance tracking in the pool. Cycling with a watch on your hand does not make any sense (except for the usual rides). That is, for cycling, you will need a chest strap. In principle, it is also needed for running (especially for interval training).

I will continue to pair these watches with my Polar H10 for all cycling activities and outdoor running activities. My goal is to get the same multi data sets and trends from a watch as good as my Vantage V2 that has broken. Plus I already use Garmin Edge 840 and 130 on my bikes and use the Rally XC power meter pedals. Later I will also be buying the Wahoo trainer. What is your opinion for the best watch?

Tks, Rob! When it comes to heart rate, which watch do you think is the most accurate? Polar Vantage V3 or Garmin Forerunner 965? I run on the street and also cycle, so for me it's very important to have a watch with an excellent GPS and heart rate measurement. I watched your review of the Vantage 3 and was disappointed by the watch's findings. But I've also heard that the 965's heart rate measurement isn't so good, so I'm confused about which watch model to buy.

Wrist based sensor works good for some people and dont for others. For me it works almost the same as chest strap. This dude is showing running intervals of 10-30s and then complain. Why i said this "scientific" bullshit is funny because when you are doing short vo2max intervals you are not tracking heart rate and instead you go by pace or by percieved effort! Of course that wrist sensor cannot exactly follow heart rate on so short interval.

My experience so far is that it's great at everything ... except the sleep algorithm is poor - it will think you're asleep after getting up for a piss in the morning and laying in bed again - even if you're wide awake and fiddling with your phone. It seems to 'expect' certain patterns and then won't correct itself when the data doesn't match.

Interesting that the Venu 2 scores so high on that chart, its right up there with the Google and Samsung watches, which tells me the issue with Garmins HR tracking is not their sensors. You can see it with the new Elevate 5.0 that the Fenix 7 pro isn't sampling heartrate full power 100% of the time. Heart rate accuracy may not be the priority of the teams that handle the premium multisport watches just simply due to how much they can do, and how long their batteries last in general. Also there is probably the assumption that if you are dropping 700-1000 USD on a fitness watch, you probably already have a chest strap, or intend on getting one. For indoor biking (spinning) you had the Venu 2 Plus R = 0.84, for the Forerunner 965 you have the R = 0.92 which is better than the Venu 2 Plus. For cycling outside you had the Venu 2 Plus R = 0.72, for the Forerunner 965, R = 0.68, which is slightly worse than the Venu 2 Plus. For weight lifting Venu 2 Plus had R = 0.64, for the Forerunner 965, R = 0.77, which is again better than the Venu 2 Plus.
