For the most part, the watch is very similar to the Series 8, but with a few improvements: first of all, the screen is quite a bit brighter, which is quite nice actually. It is quite tricky to capture on camera, but here you can see it for yourself under a bunch of different circumstances. Second, one of the main things that was addressed in the keynote is that it has a new and much more powerful S9 chip, which among other things enables the “double tap”. This was one of the most highlighted features during the keynote, maybe a bit too much in my opinion, but it is quite cool. This is available starting from watchOS version 10.1, which unfortunately isn’t out yet, and Apple did not invite me to the launch event or give me early access, so I couldn’ test it. Hey Apple, hint, hint… Now, online I saw many comments that Apple Watches basically had this feature for a long time, called Assistive Touch. I tried Assistive Touch on my Apple Watch Series 8 before the Series 9 was released, and it does have much of the same functionalities as Double Tap. Though I did find it kind of clunky to use. DC Rainmaker mentioned in his video that the double tap feature worked significantly better for him than Assistive touch. Now, Apple says the double tap feature will only work on the Series 9, because it needs the S9 chip, which is probably true for the way it is implemented. However, I still wonder if they couldn’t have made it work on older series if they’d really wanted to, but OK, it is Apple we are talking about. Now, the new S9 chip also enables Siri to do some new things: first of all, Siri can now process some commands on-device, meaning it is much faster at doing certain things, like setting an alarm. This is honestly much more important to me than double tap, since I will use Siri much more for these kinds of small tasks now. Siri can now also access your health and fitness data, and also add health data via voice commands, or at least, you will be able to do so “later this year”.

Did you experienced any wrist burns from the sensors?
Thanks for the rigorous evaluation! I think it’s important that there are public scientific evaluations like this because they incentivize companies to pay more attention to the accuracy of their measurements.
Thank you very much for this review. Keep up the effort. You are serving us incredibly qualitative videos!
excellent as always, Rob! thanks for taking the time to do this. I suffer with panic attacks and sometimes it leads to my heart racing, so it's great to know that I can have an accurate reading on my wrist, it puts my mind at ease. Thanks again!

Have you considered the possibility of also testing the accuracy of bioimpedance or electrocardiogram on watches that have this function? It would be important to know whether the results are really consistent.
Rob, your videos are always so informative and helpful. I go to your channel for any tech wear because I know your testing and explanations will be above all the rest. Thanks man.

@ntifiedScientist Is the time scale on the x-axis for spinning really in minutes:seconds? I'm looking at the woman's heart rate and it goes from about 100 to 180 and back about 4 times in less than 30 seconds? I don't understand how a heart rate can drop from almost 180 to near 100 just in a few seconds even when a person is resting. (edit. I figured it must mean time of day, rather than elapsed time so it's minutes not seconds which would make more sense)
Great video, really enjoying how the channel has developed and the improvements you have made. It was cool seeing a bit of your code!

As always love your videos and thanks for the effort you put into them, are you planning to review the withings scanwatch 2?
Thanks for your amazing work in helping us make informed choices in our times of marketing and consumerism. Hope to see soon some video of your tips on how to use biometrics to improve our lives
I’m wondering if the upgrade for the health data is from the software or the hardware. It might be interesting to test those generations with latest watchOS😊
Another lovely and informative video, Rob! Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Brazil! 😊
Excellent job, as always!
This was unbelievably informative! are you by any chance going to be testing Garmin Venu 3? I've heard good things from other watch reviewers but of course no one does such extensive testing like you do. So i'm interested in the data you gather from the the Garmin Venu 3

Hi Rob, I really appreciate all the information you shared-it's been incredibly helpful. I've been actively seeking insights into the accuracy and reliability of VO2 max estimations performed by the Apple Watch. Most of my running buddies use Garmin so they'd also really appreciate a comparison. I'd be amazing to see this! Thank you!
Nice videos! Keep up the hard work!!
Great video as always!!!
@thequantifiedScientist Great review! Love your scientific approach to device testing and reviewing! Could you please do a review of body fat tracking devices (Aura, Dexa scan, Galaxy watchs, smart weighing balances etc) and inform us about their accuracy compared to scientific gold standards? I've been on the look out for one for a while but don't know what is a reliable device for body fat goal setting and tracking.
You are amazing! Thanks a lot!
Love the comprehensive review Rob! I hate that the Apple Watch is leagues beyond the Samsung Galaxy watch and other android watches as I am a Galaxy user. I really hope these videos are taken seriously by android OS watch manufacturers to make sure we get the same quality for the price we pay because its almost on par. Thanks for keeping us well informed! Much love 😁❤

I used to be a Galaxy Watch user but cared about the accuracy of the sensors so I moved to a Garmin Venu 2 a couple of years ago and am so happy I did. Though QS rates Apple better then Garmin on sleep tracking Garmin is on par with all other sensors and Garmin is Nikes ahead of Apple with what they actually do with the data. Plus the Garmin app is so much better than the Apple Health app (and Galaxy). It's not as good as Galaxy or Apple with smart features but it includes the main things you want with incredible battery life. Check it out.

I agree. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is rubbish at sleep tracking: it typically tells me I have slept for 11 hours 15 mins when I turned the lights out at 2am and woke at 7am. So I just got an Apple Watch 8 (I have an old iPhone as well as a Galaxy). It too tells me I was asleep when I was awake, & is annoying in different ways: but still learning how to use it.

Have you or do you use a sleep app as well? I use auto sleep and feel it better represents my awake time (Apple Watch 6 & 9) is this something you’d look at testing to see how they compare to just apple sleep? Great work as always
Thanks for your dedication to conducting such thorough reviews. Can we presume the Google Pixel Watch 2 will be on your to-do list?
Is there a review coming from Venu 3? And would be awesome to have some type of update from Wear OS products 😊 Thank you for the great content!

Can you please let me know how big is your apple health app data? I am afraid that mine will become super huge I bought it and had no idea that apple stores that data on your phone and your iCloud
Awesome videos. Been watching a few of them already and gonna go through more. Any chance you can do a review on Ultrahuman ring Air?
Rob, you're my most trusted authority on these metrics so thank you. Regarding the new reference EEG device if it's confusing awake with the other sleep stages this would also contaminate the data for those stages as well right ? For example, the EEG device might be incorrectly assigning more REM sleep from awake cycles which degrades the correlation with the Apple Watch for REM ? Maybe we need a separate video comparing the new EEG device with a reference polysomnography so we can at least do some statistical adjustments.
Looking forward to a scanwatch 2 review. Hope it's at least better than the older one 😅
Hi Rob, I really appreciate the scientific approach you take to reviewing health-tracking devices. I saw that you briefly mentioned Withings. Is there any chance you'll be reviewing the new Scanwatch 2 in one of your future videos? Thanks! Great video as always.
I'd like to know if there are big differences between the data in S8 and S9, thanks for the amazing values and insights
Your videos are very informative. I want to buy a smartwatch (compatible with android) ... to help me track my sleep(mainly) and overall health. I am thinking on getting the Venu 3 or Pixel Watch 2. Will you make a review on them soon? Or do you have a better suggestion in the 400 Euro price? Thank you.
Hallo Rob, do you think there is a difference in sleep tracking capabilities between Apple Watch 5 and Series 9, with both having the newest WatchOS installed? Is there a difference and is its worth buying a new model? Also, which app is the best? You said in another video that the whoop and also Oura Ring apps are among the best (if I remember correctly), because what Apple offers in terms of app is only the health app which is not great. I seems that the whoop app seems the best, since you can actually track how different factors (like drinking alcohol at dinner before) change your sleep.. right? What do you think? I think only with the Apple Watch 5 I don't get very far... Whats your opinion? Or is the Apple Watch with some app a great combination? Read somewhere else that the SleepWatch app might be a good options? Thank you for all your hard work!
Great review as always. And I share your frustration with the new owners essentially "bricking" the Dreem 2 headbands!
Hey Rob, Many thanks for the videos. Can you please test Athlytic against similar apps. Like: Garmin bodymeter and Whoop. Thanks in advance

Very nice review. You highlight how difficult accurate sleep tracking is, I think we should be thankful that it is as good as it is. One request: please alter the sound effect used for the star rating, as it sounds very similar to a swooping magpie and I nearly suffered a cardiac arrest on my walk here in Melbourne.

Hi, do you know when and if you will do a review on Venu 3? I want to buy it but wont before you do ur review :)
Could you do an updated whoop strap test. Would be curious to see if they've tweaked some stuff since your last video. Sleep seems vastly different than my Apple Watch 8 so I assume based on this video that whoop is not a very accurate sleep monitor. thanks
Are you gonna test the Withings Scanwatch 2? I'm waiting for your review to buy it!
I hope you will do a test on the new Pixel 2 watch.
Thanks a lot, Rob ❤️ Can you please test ( huawei Watch 4 pro )
Thank u
Please review the Huawei watch D 🙏 It also measures blood pressure 🤯 I know the sleep algorithm is not good in Huawei products due to your videos (thanks BTW), but I wanna see if the accurate heart measurements also apply to this new Watch
Do you plan to make a video about oura ring competitors like Ringconn or Ultrahuman Ring air? Many people would be interested, as there is no subscription fee on those. Thanks for the great work you've been doing so far!
Rob, please put the Garmin Vivoactive 5 and Venu 3 on your list...these offer the best combination of Heart/Sleep/GPS accuracy along with great battery life and affordability...for the Android user.

Hi Rob, please 1 question: How much inaccurate is in your opinion AWU2 in HRV tracking? I saw your video in which you had shown that AW detects some false values. That is a problem for recovery prediction. It is not convinient to search and manually delete the false values. Do you think that Garmin HRV tracking is significantly better, especially during night while sleeping? Thanks for your answer Honza
Have you reviewed the Garmin HRM Pro Plus? I have a Polar H10 but I'm interested in seeing whether it's worth switching over for the garmin watch integration and the accuracy
Fantastic video! Obvious question: how the Polar and Apple Watch difference in heart rate can be explained by refreshment rates difference?
Good review!! Can you also add Redmi Watch 4 to the list? 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hi Rob, i wondering why don't you put the ECG test?😬 It is difficult to measure or what?😅😅🙏🏽
I use SleepWatch I feel it’s more accurate and I much prefer the layout of information. I agree apple needs to focus more on how they present the health data for sure.

Could you please do a comparison of sleep test in between Apple Watch 9 and Oura ring ? Thanks in advance
hey what watch will you recomend for fitness tracking in the budget category
waiting for fitbit charge 6 review.
So sad to see Galaxy Watch is not performing so well...I'm so glad I discovered this channel before purchasing. Nice video!
Would be interesting to compare blood oxygen results with some other watches, like huawei watches etc. I do feel like the ultra2 is underestimating my level compared to my Huawei watch 3 pro, dropping constantly below 90% during sleep.
Hey Rob, good job as usual and appreciate your effort on making these videos! For SpO2 measurement, why don't you compare the data with a FDA-approved pluse oximeter? Also, I think if you rest your arm properly without motion, the Apple Watch will give you the most accurate SpO2 measurement. Just my two cents.
Hi Rob your reviews are so important because have a totally different approach. But I've hoped you were ready to share with us the review of the last Garmin Venue 3. I said that because Apple products put on many of us a lot of hype but in the end only the 16% more or less have an iphone (me included with an Apple Watch 4) while the great majority has Android ( me included too with galaxy watch 4). So we Android users need to find the right watch for fitness or for health or both. I'm only interested in health and sleep. So far i could choose the Pixel Watch, the new fitbit charge 6 or what else? The oura ring doesn't have vibration alert unfortunately. Please tell us/me that your review avout Garmin Venue 3 is ready or suggest me what to buy in place of my galaxy Watch 4 Thank you so much 😊
in the comprehensive review I couldn't find a mention of series 9 from apple: would you prefer the ultra or the series 9 for weightlifting tracking/ sleep tracking - overall ?
Could you make a scientific review on the mi band 8 global version?
would it be worth it to get the series 9 vs series 8? What would be the benefit for stainless steel vs aluminium? thanks have you measured durability of materials in that sense ? thanks
Great analysis, it seems you are an Rthusiast 😉. I too have a lot of love for the R programming language. I'd really appreciate it if you could share the analysis report (if you have it in a Quarto or Rmarkdown file), as I would love to learn from your coding steps that generate these informative graphs and statistical tests. Cheers brother.
