Why I’ve switched to the Coros Pace 3 (Garmin Sucks)

In this Video I explain why I've changed over the the Coros Pace 3, from my Garmin forerunner 955. The Coros Pace 3 is absolutely the best running watch - here's why. This Coros Pace 3 review covers the 3 reasons why the Coros ecosystem is the absolute best running watch for serious runners who just want to get faster - and don't care about other features that don't matter when running. The Coros vs Garmin showdown!
Follow me on Instagram / peakstride_
Follow me on Strava / strava
Summary:
User Experience - This watch is so clearly designed to enhance the user experience of a runner who wants to run…and it unapologetically dosen’t care about your big bulky garmin with a metal besel and fancy amoled screen. Because none of that really matters when you’re running.
Software - The running watch game is now pretty much all about software, and data. And Coros knows this. They have invested lots of time over the last 3 years in developing great software to help you understanding your running better.
Brand Philosophy - Coros are sticking to their niche, making running watches for runners. Other brands are spending time trying to appease every different kind of person, and so they really lose what makes a great running watch, a great running watch.

I was rocking a Garmin Instinct for around 5 years. That watch saved my life a few times during land navigation, but when I decided to upgrade I went for the top of the line COROS. The Coros was cool but I found that it was not as accurate as my 5 year old Garmin. I took it back and purchased an Epix Pro 47mm for 200.00 more and I am honestly satisfied with my purchase. The Epix doesn’t even have as many features, but it is way wayyyyyy more accurate when running on a treadmill and the sleep/nap tracking is better as well.

Same experience. Have tried THREE Coros devices in the past year. All were good. None were kept. I'm back with Garmin. Wanted to love Coros but HR sensors are subpar and firmware is constant bugs. The Coros HRM would not even properly pair to two watches in our family... No other sensor has ever had issue, brand notwithstanding. My Pace3's HRM was more trouble and cadence-lock happy than the Pace2 even. Garmin is at least reliable.

I got a Pace 3 for Christmas and love it. I do not have the issue with text messages that you mentioned. If I click the wheel on the message preview, it always opens up the notification to let me scroll through and read the entire text/email. I also kind of like the music storage feature. It's a little old school. But I have found some great free downloads of house music with perfect tempos to pair with runs.

I really enjoy my Pace 3, been using it since launch and I'm probably going to stay with Coros for good unless they just totally drop the ball in the future. The ease of setting up training plans, the battery life, how quickly it gets GPS signal, and how lightweight it is were the big things that sold me on it. Also the price of course. My only issue with it is the wrist based HR doesn't seem so great (for me, but I do MAF training mostly so need high accuracy) but I usually run with a strap.

I've got a Garmin currently and I like the AMOLED screen, but for all the bells and whistles not one of the Garmin watches can properly track my naps or any sleep outside of the "sleep hours", whereas my Fitbit charge 3 could track naps & sleep at any time. I also agree about how difficult it is to increase the low aerobic load because I do a significant amount of walking indoors at home, at work, and shopping, and I never can be bothered to get on my Garmin to start/stop tracking a walk everytime I stand up!

I have the Garmin 245 music. I recently bought the Coros version sold by Decathlon. I’m using both at the same time to compare stats. For outside runs they are nearly neck to neck. But for inside runs the difference is quite staggering. For example on a 10 km inside run (treadmill or track) the Coros version always gives me a distance up to 2 km more and an average pace higher than the Garmin. Would you mind trying both your watches at the same time just to see if you get such a significant difference in running stats? ☺️🇨🇦

Have a Forerunner 955 but also been considering switching to Coros. But if it's not able to constantly monitor heart rate and provide sleeping HRV averages that's annoying. Never use music, so that's not an issue. My forerunner seems to be a bit crazy, saying I'm strained when I'm not, as you pointed out, also seeing my VO2 Max go down constantly despite consistent exercise is annoying too, went from 54 down to 49, I can fairly easily run a sub 4 hour marathon, so while not great, I think 49 is low, especially as that's what it said was my VO2 Max when I first started running and I'm much fittet now. Also the race predictor seems ridiculously over optimistic.

  • @PeakStride

    @PeakStride

yeah it would make zero sense for you vo2max to drop that much unless you donated blood every day for a week haha! the Coros does track HRV now, and for the heart rate - I personally don't care too much about exact heart rated while im living my life. You're mostly right. But even a cheaper Garmin 245, which I bought for 150$, has daily suggested training feature which won't be available any time soon in Coros Pace 3 or probably 4 and later. Another thing it is pace and heart rate data delay during speed intervals. I might call it inaccuracy. For me personally these are way more useful and important features than, for example, less time needed to set a training session in an app and connect it to a watch. In other words it looks like Coros Pace 3 sucks.

Then shortly after I used a huge stack of money on the FR945, they realesed the FR965, and since then the FR945 have been ignored by Garmin, even more than the older FR235 (actually the most popular Garmin watch). I have no desire to stay with Garmin, but historic data does absolutely count... Therefore Golf has been a huge deal for some years, even if it's not a very large userbase, and even been given it's own entry in the app-menu, that no others have been given. It would make more sense to give that option to Triathlon or Ultra or what ever. But apparently golfers are not that adept to handling an app, just telling me, that the most important golf-users are Garmins own non-athletic/non-tech-savy boardmembers. Wheras a simple feature of being able to edit a workout BEFORE upload (could be adding distance to a row- or eliptical workout) has been ignored for a decade+. Only showing that the ones taking the desitions at Garmin are not the hardcore users. Coros is so much more in line with what the userbase actualy requests and is open to new ideas. Garmin could soon fall in the "NOKIA-trap".

Making it possible to add in the Distance or Time or Strokes or other missing metric for the chosen workout. If you are any kind of military, first responder, nurse, security, night worker… don’t buy a Garmin. You cannot manually switch off the sleep schedule. It makes you set one or defaults to a traditional 9-5 sleep. If you are at work at 0200 it will constantly put itself into sleep mode and DND even if you toggle the mode off manually. Some people say to set one minute sleep settings for the day to fix it… ok… tried that. Doesn’t work. It will still every few minutes during the nighttime turn on DND and sleep mode. This will also mess with the sleep function during the day. Sometimes you will sleep a few hours, wake up, even log a workout and it’s still logging you as sleeping. Garmin genuinely believes that I took a “nap” (because it can’t POSSIBLY be sleep during the daytime) from 1200-0200 BUT I also got up, got dressed, and ran for half an hour with a HR of 150… all in my sleep! Sorry, in my “nap”. Garmin is a joke. Unless you live under a perfect and ideal schedule going down at 2130 and waking up at 0530 every day, Garmin isnt worth it. All the flashy numbers and stats draw people in, but seriously, if you’re not going to be the poster child of perfect sleep timing, your sleep scores will be inaccurate and thus so will the rest of all these “impressive” stats.. Garmin is ONLY automatic and even if you try to set it to an alternative sleep schedule, it will default and put you in do not disturb during your shift. I’d set $450 on fire before I bought a Garmin again. The Coros may have to be my new running watch.

For intervals, you have the same features on garmin. Garmin's running interface on the app sucks though. Love coros' (and polar's) interface better.
