    These reviews are beautifully put together! So much fun to watch. I switched from a Fenix to Epix 2 51mm in early December. Winters are dark and gloomy here, and the solar never really made much difference. I've used the Epix as an everyday watch, and have done a fair bit of Winter mountaineering this season, plus mountain rescue call outs. The display is crystal clear in horrible conditions (and kind of comforting!) And the mapping detail is really improved. It did take a while to get used to AMOLED gesture mode, though!

    That's awesome Dan! Yeah, I agree with you, the display on the Epix is really helpful. I'm glad you snagged the 51mm Epix. It actually get's better battery life with the bigger size. The Solar seems to be most helpful on watches like the Instinct Solar 2X. It needs a low draw device like the Instinct to really 'shine' ☀️ Thanks for the kind words about the review!

    I’m a runner and just switched to a AWU2 around launch time, upgrading from a AW Series 7. Battery life, while not Garmin, is great, I never think about it. I’m running 20-30mi a week and have never once had battery anxiety, as I did with my series 7, which started dying on my longer runs. My goal is start running ultras, and by my 40th birthday (5 years), qualify for, and finish Western States. I know that when the time comes, and my body is more ready for that, I’ll be using a Garmin, probably Fenix edition, mostly for the battery life. For now, I’m sticking with this AWU2 and couldn’t be more happy every time I take it out on a run.

  • @mlegrand

    @mlegrand

    Western States would be awesome! I suggest starting that lottery process as early as possible. But I imagine the Apple Watch Ultra will also continue to evolve. You might want an Epix or Enduro but you might not. It might depend on what Apple does over the next few years. 🤞🏻 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. Amazing review as always. Super well done and your picks are almost perfect. I do believe the Polar Vantage V3 deserves to be on this list as an over priced but very capable and featured watch. Perhaps if you bundled the Apple Watches as 1 and the Garmin epix/fenix as 1 you could have opened up more slots for polar V3, the instinct (rather then make it a bonus) and maybe an Amazfit would have been an excellent one to include. Anyway just excellent. Keep your videos coming! 🎉

    This list is awesome. Love the bonus watch as the I2X also offers such value at the mid-range (since it also has flashlight). Perfect placement of all as I would say as well. And sidenote the Suunto race is an absolutely incredible watch. I love it at the top end of all that I've tested, like ALL of them - other than the heart rate sensor. The heart rate sensor just changes it all, and unfortunately for the worst. You've gotta try it and let me know what you think

    I'm looking to buy my first GPS watch and am deciding between the Coros Pace 3 and the Garmin Forerunner 255. The Forerunner 255 is on sale for $250, so the price difference isn't a factor. I'll mostly be using the watch for running but sleep and general fitness tracking will be nice as well (weightlifting and yoga mostly). Was wondering why you rated the Forerunner 255 higher than the Pace 3? Also, do you think Pace 3 being newer and Coros supporting its older products longer with updates should impact my decision?

  • @mlegrand

    @mlegrand

    2 ай бұрын

    I ranked the 255 higher because it has a good bit more features. I really like Garmin’s morning report and sleep tracking. GPS is also more accurate in my testing. Coros does a great job supporting older devices. It’s hard to say exactly how Garmin will support the 255 over the next few years. 🤷🏻‍♂️ If it were me, I’d get the 255.

    I own a POLAR pacer pro, and Really love the look of it, on the hardware and the materials side, it feels very nice and robust. However, on the software side and especially on the UI side, it’s lacking and feels very 2018 ish especially when browsing the menus or in the integrated widget-apps. Witch is a bit frustrating because I wish I could recommend POLAR to anyone but currently, I wouldn’t because of the things mentioned above and the fact that they still haven’t integrated some really basic, but yet crucial features, like customization for the watch faces, menus, more settings and a complete redesign of the watchs interface. Also, the possibility to have more than 4 information displayed while exercising, and a counter for sets while working out in the gym and much more little, but yet important aspects, that when pilled up, represents a step back regarding the competition. it’s crazy to me that the polar pacer, for example, didn’t received any updates or new features since 2022. POLAR could easily be among the best sport watch on the market, but they should prioritize the providing features and more frequent updates and UI improvement, rather than releasing new watch every years.

    Somehow agree with this list except for Apple and Suunto watches that I haven't tried. But would love to see you review Suunto Race and see how it compares to equivalent Garmin watches. Really curious with Suunto as some of their watch I found itattractively designed. And as I have tried Pace 3, 955, 7s Pro and now 265, I came up with conclusion that: Amoled is indeed quite nice, Fit and Comfort (includes size and weight) is very important factor and lastly some feature are only good to have but not necessary. Hence probably I'll stay on 265 for awhile until maybe I'm "Pro" enough (rich as well) to take advantage 9**, Fenix or Epix additional features. Cheers again for wonderful vids man! 😁

While I was new to the area I kind of missed it, but now I know all the ins and outs, so mapping probably would be nice, but not critical to have. My personal choise was instinct 2x couple month ago. I have a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, an Apple Watch Series 7 and a Garmin Epix Gen 2 (not the PRO version). What can I say. I love all 3. The Galaxy is a connection wizard with all my Samsung devices and a great smartwatch. The Apple is an all around Smartwatch, which I only use when i take my iPhone out with me. And the Garmin is a tech beast full of features thai will never get to use, but it is beautiful, its titanium and sapphire. Its the one I choose for health monitoring, wokouts and jogging. Fantastic software Garmin Connect. Great video by the way. Thumbs up.

    I have been using the Fenix 6 for over a year now. Helping out with my son's boy scout troop, the long battery life and mapping features really make this watch indispensable. Week-long camp outs are nothing for this watch. I love using the sight and go feature while teaching the kids orienteering. They can use their compass and count their steps. I will just walk behind them making sure they are going the right way.

    Coming from a forerunner 255, I got me the Fenix 7 Pro sapphire and while I really like MIP displays und love the functions of the watch, I really struggle with visibility on the sapphire version because of the dark tint . It’s hard to read indoors sometimes or in bad weather conditions and if I turn on the backlight with gesture, the battery drains noticeably faster. Someone here with experience with the standart Fenix 7 Pro? I’m not sure if I should change to non sapphire or if I get used to it

    The added solar panel is a bigger deterrent to readability than the sapphire glass, especially with maps. If you want to stick with a MIP display in the same range, also without solar, you’d have to go with Tactix standard edition.

    In your experience, Garmin providing security updates “at least” until May of this year a problem? I'm trying to decide between the FR255, the new FR165 and the Coros Pace 3 for pool, occasional open water and racing, which I hope will last several years. I'm more inclined towards the FR255, but I'm afraid of buying a “new” watch without support for updates, and this be a problem in the near future.

My normal GPS settings are not as aggressive but accurate and I get more than two weeks of battery before I charge it up. I track the health options and they have been helpful, as I am old and keeping in shape without breaking anything. My watch is currently in a desk drawer waiting a new original silicone band. Having owned both the Epix pro (51mm), Fenix pro solar (47mm) and the Apple Watch Ultra 2, I was disappointed with the outdoor visibility of the Epix pro. Sometimes it took an exaggerated gesture to get the screen to go bright. I never had that issue with the Fenix. I’ve found when I need to see the watch the most (during a hike or activity, the MIP display on the Fenix never let me down. On the other hand, I felt like it was more effort on the Epix pro. I used to own the 965 but that was when I wasn't into running and now more recently I've got into trail running and now I miss the maps but I hated the AMOLED screen and constantly having to flick the wrist to see the screen, sometimes that didn't work and would have to tap it to light up, it was tiny things but they got on my nerves, Ive recently been wondering if I should get the fenix 7x or pro, or even the 955, I used to own the 255 and loved it but sold it for the 965 and hated what I said before about it. Part of me just thinks to stick with the instinct 2x as it will help me in every situation possible, even help me get un lost if I ever do lol but the 955 would be cheaper now and might work well, I also looked at the Coros watches, but on the fence as I'm so used to Garmin.

Either the 965 or the Epix Pro would be perfectly fine for Ironman distance triathlons. The 965 might be preferred because of it's light weight but the Epix isn't that much heavier. Im a fairly serious marathon runner, coros and garmin allow you/ a coach to create or enter workouts into you ecosystem. Apple is abysmal for this. I have the AWU 1 and had to relegate it to a $900 iPod on my wrist. Its fitness data is sub par and I just found it so inflexible as a serious training tool. Entering repeats or long run workouts was brutal and so manual on the Apple watch. I get it it’s shiny and nice, but there’s a reason no serious sub 2:40 runners are using it in training or on race day

    Good call Bullfighter. There might be a sub 2:40 marathoner using an Apple Watch but I can't think of any. I think I wore a Nike watch when I was a 2:30 runner. Hopefully your AWU can be used daily as a bit more than an iPod. It's nice to have something tightly integrated with your phone even if it's not used on your daily runs.

    The question everyone wants to know but is too embarassed to ask: What is largest number of watches you've worn on one workout? 😁 Looking forward to the Epix Gen 3 that I hope releases this fall. Love my gen 2, but the end game version would have 20% more battery life (or more). I think solar could go a long way in the summer as well.

    That's a good question. I've probably maxed out at about 6 watches for a run. I tend to put them on the back of a hat and on my hands. If you wear them right next to each other they can cause GPS interference so you need to spread them out just a little.

  • @barryfrombarnsley2790

    When you comment about the quality of GPS of the watches, where are you doing your testing? I’ve found that the GPS in Apple devices is nowhere near as accurate as Garmin dual band GPS when hiking in Scotland, for example. It’s somewhat misleading to say that the GPS in Apple devices is just as good as the dual band variety used by the likes of Garmin (and maybe even Coros, not tried it myself yet), unless you only stay in areas with good cellular connectivity

  • @barryfrombarnsley2790

    For example, I find that Apple devices just guess where I’ve been in certain locations and when comparing against a map or a dual band GPS, I can see that it’s sometimes got the path I took on my run/hike quite wrong.

  • @mlegrand

    I typically wear multiple watches spaced out enough to avoid interference. Which Apple Watches have you tested? They became a lot more accurate around the Series 6. I find Garmin and Apple to be slightly more accurate than Coros. Regardless of the multi-band GPS chipset.

    @@mlegrand it was a series 8 a couple of months ago. A few of areas of poor (at times no) cellular coverage in the lowlands, it couldn’t keep up and would make a best guess as to where I’d been, sometimes for quite lengthy periods of time. I agree with your comment wholeheartedly about the heart rate tracking etc, the Apple Watch was very accurate regarding fitness tracking etc., just the GPS was unreliable.

    @@bogdanpop5597 ok, so the ultra model has dual band GPS. Well, then the ultra model can probably hang with the Garmin watches then. If you watch the video, none of this is mentioned, he says that the SE model has very accurate GPS right at the start then he says that the GPS accuracy of the series 9 is equal to or better than the other watches in the list. This is not true. Maybe it is for the ultra then, but I’m addressing the contents of this video.

    Tbf, it doesn’t take a lot of research to see, that garmin is pretty much the best smart watch for anyone. And the is comes from an Apple Watch user, I will happily concede that any basic garmin is better than the Apple Watch Ultra unless you take phone calls on your watch regularly

  • @RunnerRemRem

    Matt it is unfair to the Series 9 that the Ultra 2 knocks a podium. These watches have the exact same sport functionalities, software and thus should be separated by 1 rank, like you did for all the Garmin when the hardware is better.

    Very good point RM. They could easily be next to each other in this list. I put the AWU2 up in the top three because these all have the more durable sapphire lens displays. I think if this was specifically about swimming, biking and running features, I’d actually need to group these by companies a bit more. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment.
