I Switched from GARMIN to COROS (Review!)

I've got an exciting new product to test, and it's the COROS Pace 3! Having used Garmin for a number of years, in this video I test the new watch and see how it compares to its Garmin counterpart. Enjoy!
(This is not a paid advertisement - I bought this watch with my own money.)

I've been looking at it for a while and think i'm going to get it ! Little question can you use the map on the watch without having your phone and can you download maps on the watch to look at without having your phone ? Is it any good in the gym for strength workouts? Great review thanks !

You don’t have to have your phone with you for routes that you’ve planned. You can’t see a map unless you’ve got a route planned though, and even then it’s only the line of the route you can see. I’ve found the strength function to be better than garmin - you can select which muscle group you’re working on and the set / rest layout seems logical. Hope that helps!

Great review John, I think I'm sold on the pace 3. Any advice for a beginner runner wanting to do a half-marathon this year? Mostly looking for a weekly workout plan that'll prepare me for the race.

  • @johnhinton_runs

There are loads of online plans you can look at! There are some free examples but also ones you can pay a few pounds for from Ben Parkes, The Running Channel etc. In essence, the main things to do are slowly increase volume, incorporate some strength work, and some interval sessions. KZread would be a great place to start to find half marathon training tips! Maybe I’ll do a video on it in the future! If you do get the Pace 3, COROS also has a selection of training plans that you can load on to the watch, there may be a suitable half marathon one there. Good luck!

You should be able to connect your Runna app and make the training plans sync to your watch! Not 100% sure but either way you can manually set up the workouts on the COROS app.

The Pace 3 definitely seems to be a great watch. But unfortunately the comparison is a bit unfair since the 245 is almost 5 years old now. The 255 now costs around the same as the Pace 3. Feature-wise they are pretty similar. So switching systems isn't all that necessary anymore.

COROS is really a runners watch. More compact and efficient in features and price. But Garmin for more other extra features, extra prices and more smartwatch features. Depending on your use case. But specifically for running, the price/performance ratio, nothing beats a COROS.

I would prefer the FR265 over the Coros3. But the price is also higher. But would choose the Coros 3 over the new Garmin FR165. So if you're into a budget runnerwatch, this can be the one.

I've got a Forerunner 235, and I was thinking to upgrade to a Pace 3 (as I can't justify the cost of a 265) The main issue I have with the 235 is the slowness of locking onto GPS

I’ve found the GPS on the PACE 3 to be really, really good, on Dual Frequency mode at least. It locks on usually within 20 seconds. I do feel like COROS has a lot of the features of the 265 at a much cheaper price point.

Wrist based heart rate is inherently inaccurate, it’s not a COROS based thing, and they’ve improved their sensor from the pace 2. They wouldn’t bother to release a separate heart rate monitor (still only 95% accurate within 3bpm) if the watch was always accurate, and almost all reviews mention this.
