COROS APEX 2 & APEX 2 Pro In-Depth Review: Features, Tested, Accuracy!

Спорт

Here's your complete in-depth review of the COROS APEX 2 & APEX 2 Pro watches, from the new features, how they differ, and then a complete accuracy deep-dive.
Today COROS has announced the long-teased COROS APEX 2 series watches, including both a base model and a Pro model. While I had considered doing entirely separate reviews for both of these, the reality is they’re virtually identical watches same some minor internal spec differences. Thus, I’ve gone with one consolidated review. And to make things even more fun - I’ve been wearing both watches side by side (well, on opposite wrists) just to see how they handle and differ.
The new APEX 2 series is best viewed through the lens of being a smaller VERTIX 2 (released one year ago). It’s got virtually all the same software features as the more expensive Vertix 2, and in fact, with the Vertix 2 priced virtually all of October at $499, it’s been the same price as the new-announced APEX 2 Pro. But, we’re getting distracted. Ultimately, COROS sees these two models (APEX 2 Pro vs Vertix 2) differentiated by style/materials, more so than software.
The 1.3” screen COROS APEX 2 Pro includes a revamped optical heart rate sensor, adds multiband GNSS/GPS, adds music storage for MP3’s (no streaming service), and includes offline maps, touchscreen, WiFi, and HRV readings. It also includes a battery life up to 75 hours depending on the mode (25 hours for multiband usage though). The APEX 2 PRO comes in at $499, whereas the base APEX 2 slides in at $399, but lacks the multiband GPS and larger battery life, and has a slightly smaller screen.

A great review! Thank you for sorting them in with the competition's price points! I'm currently using a entry level Garmin watch and was eye-balling the Coros watches quite a bit. Mostly because I like their styling. But if the GPS is just off vs. the 955, I don't see myself paying the same cash for an inferior product.

The Apex 2 Pro is my first and only sport watch and it ticked boxes for my interests that I couldnt find elsewhere at the same price point. I don't do a lot of running between tall buildings and I don't need all the fancy Garmin integrations, but I do heavily use maps for backcountry navigation and I enjoy that I can take serveral-day trips with tracking and navigation without ever worrying about battery life. A lot of what im looking for is only available once you get into the Fenix/Epix-level with Garmin.

Glad I did not wait for Apex2/Apex Pro2 and got the Apex 46mm while it was available. For me, even-though the Apex 46mm had been max out for updates, it’s features are perfectly sufficient. The previous version is also thinner at 11.9mm, less cumbersome while running and more classy for daily wear. Although I do not like to run with music, I wish my current Apex had the option which I would use from time to time. I suppose Coros will be adding music streaming on new version moving forward. I think Coros version 2 is still a great choice but I believe Coros lost it’s edge in comparison to other manufacturers. The battery is still a huge plus though. It’s hard to do better than an already very good watch.

Agreed on your summary, I do feel very underwhelmed by this update of features, having had the Vertix 2, it doesn't seem like they have innovated from there (other then capturing similar features at a lower price point), and mapping would have been a great place to start, I found the map on the Vertix 2 virtually useless with it's poor contrast and lack of street/trail names. And understanding the build quality is "better" than a Garmin 955, they should not be placing themselves in the same ballpark price wise. Just an added note, I recently purchased the Amazfit Trex 2 and looking at the Falcon, this brand would be an interesting one to review and compare with Coros considering their price points and build quality as well.

The reliability/accuracy is my deal-breaker, albeit in awe of the tech overall, I know I would hate paying out and then still not being able to trust the readings in the field or the stats later. And this is for a new device, who knows what longevity these things have. Which is why as a potential customer I rely heavily on influencers like yourself! Plus I bet the brands all live in terror of your review conclusions. Not sure I could handle the responsibility!

Garmin has its fair share of bogus metrics in their watches as well. Unfortunately it's really a race for the company that comes up with most features, not the one that is most reliable. Reviewer like DC rainmaker are really important to get this changed. In the garmin at least two thirds of the measures are so inaccurate they are misleading or dangerous. The coros is only slightly worse.

The assesment of the price point vs Garmin Forerunners is heavily one-sided imo. The Apex 2 is made way more out of premium materials and not only plastic. I also think the watch wins in accuracy regarding elevation / ascent accuracy for big mountain days. Will see in my tests. I tried recently 2 Garmin watches for big mountain days (not only 100m ascent test). And Garmin watches are far off the accuracy which I get from my Suunto watch. I do also not have hPa data during activity when there is no accurate continuous correction of altitude. Garmins DEM method I found very inaccurate depending on accuracy of map data on certain peaks of mountains. So that's why unfortunately Garmin is no option for me. There is also much noise about the Baro of Garmins in forums. Not clear why they do so many functions, but do not clean up this essential thing. I think Coros is maybe more comparable to an "advanced" Suunto which for now does not exist. I believe that's also the reason why Coros has 2 new famous ambassadors and the fastest UTMB man ;-). This is very big value and trust. Also I think Garmin has no ECG sensor and is doing this via SW guessing? Also Coros is known for big feature updates, which is a big value for me. So I am curious about testing the Apex 2...

I think they missed even having the nfc card payment and proper integration with the stryd like garmin does.. I think for running the ecosystem for coros is better but then garmin has a better over all base ecosystem for cycling and running I think anyway.. plus maps navigation they really need to up that to compete with competitors battery life won't alway win when you don't actually need it unless your doing big ultra marathons.

I have a 255 and a Vertix 2. The Vertix 2 is always behind the 255 when reporting the final distance after a workout, be it run, hike or bike. Thing is I’ve noticed that the 255 is adding extra distance like crazy when standing still. I noticed this on a recent hike I did a few days ago. On the other hand, I ran an officially measured route 3 times and the 255 was spot on on every pass while the Vertix 2 was a bit behind but still consistent, giving the same distance on every pass. I’ll have to do more testing. As a a side note, the OHR on the 255 is amazing, significantly better than the Vertix 2.

Think that not only the price is the reason to select this type of watch. It's rather interesting for people who do ultra running in general and don't really need the marketing gimmicks that a Garmin offers but see more use in the simplicity and good battery life that these have to offer. That is where Garmin comes in to trouble because except for the fenix 7X and the enduro 2 none of their watches is capable in delivering a decent battery life for mountain 100Miler races for non top athletes. Also I and a lot of people always take my phone with me to make sure I can call when I come later or get injured to contact anyone who needs to know. So Why would I need spotify or any other service on the watch anyhow? I always see this coming back in all the reviews, but it's just because this is not interesting for the people who come look at these watches.

Routable maps are part of the Fenix 6X, as well as all Fenix 7, FR945/FR955/Epix, etc... The take me to the start of the course is on the Edge units (and actually prompts you), I don't have a Fenix 6X in front of me right this second, but I don't think it prompts you offhand, but rather, you can hold to open the navigation options once you've loaded the course and I think it'll offer it there. Either way, routable maps-wise, none of that exists on the COROS watches.

There are a lot of misconceptions here. Do you really need maps? How often are you hiking without a phone? And if you're a pro, do you really rely on the watch? Do you really need 100% hr accuracy? If you do, use HR strap! Even the best garmin doesn't have that level of accuracy. So you need an optical sensor just for resting hr, and things that are not that challenging. And these things almost all watches can handle. Coros apex Pro 1 has much better materials than garmin, up to 600 dollars. 3 years coros apex pro, no single scratch. Music support - I like the idea. If you want, you can load some mp3s and they'll be available no matter what. Apex pro received all the updates, apex - not. If you want to buy a coros, it can be a Pace 3 or Apex 2 pro. First is price 2 performance, second is good materials and support, but they are pretty much the same. And yes, sometimes apex pro 1 during the simple hike can show wildly inaccurate heart rate, and this is an issue. Maybe apex 2 pro is better in that regard.

  • @MrBlubb80
    @MrBlubb807 ай бұрын

Imagine buying a Coros watch - a sports watch - and then, for example, getting the glass scratched. You would expect it to be repaired at a fair price, right? But Coros, they exchange it and refund you about one third of the original price of the watch. This means you pay TWO THIRDS of the price of a new watch to get the glass replaced. While at least they are transparent about it on their website, I find this policy unacceptable. But all these reviews here only cover features, not the service or reliability and policy of the manufacturers. So that's where they can make the money. It's up to you to change that!

Disagree. I just went from a F7X SS to an Epix gen 2 and the screen is a major update, particularly if you do lots of swimming like I do. AMOLED have a way better readability than MIP indoor. You can set the brightness in a way that it doesn't scream "cellphone" on your wrist. I dont see myself going back to a MIP screen.

@@RunnerRemRem i didn't say the screen doesn't look good. Just not for me. I don't swim very much and the MIP is super in direct sunlight. I personally don't like AMOLED screen watches because of the hit on battery life but mostly because it looks too much like a phone on your wrist. Personal preference. I just like the subdued look of a traditional watch screen 👍

In your summary. Comparing them to the forerunner 955 and 255 you forget one big advantage that Coros have. It’s made with premium materials. Titanium and sapphire cristal. That is a HUGE difference. Especially at that price point. Shame on you for overlooking that.

It’s not the whole case that’s titanium, but merely the top bezel. And sapphire? It’s not much different than Gorilla Glass DX, you can even look it up (and Sapphire glass actually more breakable, albeit slightly less scratchable). It sounds like you’re just repeating things you read on a FB group, without researching them…

@@DcrainmakerResearching them? My friend, You made the video about it and put it out there for us, the public to see. Is it not your job to research them for us and make a full and fair comparison? You influence people’s purchasing decisions based on your reviews and comparisons. Since you went ahead and compared it to the Garmin watches, I believe you still should have mentioned the fact that the materials and build quality are superior and that might have contributed to the increase in price. That difference is something worth mentioning to your audience. If you’re going to make a comparison, do a FULL comparison not just partial. The fact that you completely left that out is what I’m calling you out on. And don’t worry I’m completely capable of thinking for myself and not just regurgitate words I hear in “FB” chats. @@harismout219 correct. But later on in the review he goes on to compare these watches with Garmin forerunner watches and makes NO mentions AT ALL about the difference in materials and build quality. @@Dcrainmaker I was curious about this too. Although the price makes a natural comparison to the 955, the design looks more comparable to the Fenix 7, in which case Coros is undercutting on price. What are your thoughts on that?
