Cops cuffed him for failing to signal but video exposed the real motive

Like hundreds of thousands of other Texas motorists, Thomas Reader found himself in an unending debt spiral as a result of the state's Drivers Responsibility Act. Due to the program's surcharges and late fees, Reader owed $13,000 to the state-an amount he simply couldn't pay until he was finally granted a form of amnesty. The occupational license, which was a direct result of this program, limited his ability to drive, and as a DoorDasher his increased time on the road only meant increased exposure to police looking to write tickets to secure revenue. When Reader, out of frustration, "flipped the bird" at a Texas Sheriff patrol car, officers conveniently claimed to have witnessed a traffic violation, pulling Reader over and arresting him. Taya Graham and Stephen Janis of the Police Accountability Report examine the footage in the case and its wider implications on the corrosive power of revenue-motivated policing, which is increasingly a factor in the behavior of law enforcement nationwide.

Cash bail is unconstitutional. It violates due process and equal protection under the 14th Amendment, the prohibition against excessive bail found in the Eighth Amendment, and the right to a speedy trial guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment. This gives the U.S. Department of Justice plenty to work with.

Hi, it's me Taya Graham the reporter for the Police Accountability report and I wanted to state that I completely support this statement! I just recently bought a dash cam and internal cam and I have been a little lazy about installing it but I truly believe every citizen must protect themselves by car and body cameras. There are too many incidents where only video evidence allowed the citizen, the victim to be believed, and for your sake please do what you must. There are too many states which do not abide in any way shape or form by transparency laws to protect the public. FOIA (Freedom of Information Act Requests) are considered a courtesy not a necessity. So please, do what you can, and support those who fight for transparency and accountability. But most of all please be safe, as the saying goes you may be the rap, but you can't beat the ride. And I don't want anyone to endure incarceration who has not committed a crime. There are many crimes that deserve severe punishment, exercising your first amendment rights is not one of them. Please stay safe! 🙏🙏🙏 Taya G

In many states, the laws have changed such that corporations and property owners are not paying much tax, or in some states, tax rates that date from the 1950s, for municipal services that cost 2024 dollars. The real estate interests in particular are guilty, you often see real-estate owners (landlords) in state senate/legislatures, and they're making the laws to exempt themselves. This leaves a hole that needs to be filled. That's why you get cops basically trained to go out and hunt down (or manufacture) "violations" because it's a shakedown and a form of taxation by proxy to fill gaps. These gaps will continue to grow 9and need filling) as cannabis is legalized.

A world without a path to success happiness and partnership that is clear for them. Our men, and our women, our people, we all deserve better! It's not about right or wrong, or even what can be said to be legal. The government has complete control and can do as it pleases. It knows it is illegitimate, and it knows it exists outside of the will of the people or even it's own unjust laws. It doesn't care, and it will do whatever it wants because no one will stop it. There is only one rational solution, and it's not legal to use that solution. We tried it once a couple hundred years ago, and the people back then told us we would have to do it again one day if we weren't careful. We were not careful and we know what we must do now. We have no other choice.

@@julieclark32Was y'all's case covered on this channel? I've seen a few of your comments on here, on this case. I don't agree with every single case I see on this channel, but I respectfully state my opinion when I don't. Having said that, I have huge, *major* problems with cash and property civil seizures, and even bigger ones with the process of getting back said cash or property. Spoiler: Because of the way those laws are written, most of the time, there **is no process** to get your property back! Even when you have undeniable proof, there's no way to file it, present it to the courts, or even get a review of your case. 99% of victims of these policies, never get their stuff back, and only a minute fraction of victims get a miniscule amount back. I've watched many reports and documentaries about this, from just one person on KZread, to major media corporations, and everything in between. I've never been so shocked in my life as to the complete non-existence of due process! And nothing gets done because most people don't know a thing about it. Those laws were originally intended to be used against major, major drug dealers and manufacturers, like the cartels and their money launderers, **not** ordinary, law-abiding citizens. As a matter of fact, it wasn't meant for normal, non-law-abiding citizens, either! I was watching an episode of Cops many years ago, maybe even a decade, I can't quite remember, and a Sheriff's Office was running a sting operation. People that came and bought 20 or $30 worth of crack, if their car was paid off the sheriff's office would seize it. That's definitely not what those laws were intended for! Like I said, not enough people know that this is going on, and that there's no way, no process of proving your innocence and getting your money or your property back.

Who would be responsible for arresting the police in this situation? Internal Affairs? Their Supervisor? The City Manager? FBI? Justice Department? I say it's a 2nd Amendment problem.

Because they need to be stopped and fired and go to jail. And they need to pay you for your agony of suffering and loss of work.

Fines and bail and any monetary punishments should have no place in the judicial system. Making money a punishment means that the rich have almost no consequences and the poor have crazy high consequences. A $1000 fine can take a poor person months to come up with and be multiple weeks of pay, while a middle class person may already have it on hand and only take maybe a week of pay, and a rich person will just pay it and it could be maybe a few hours of work. How is that equality under the law in terms of punishment?

The problem with public NONservice jobs overall in 2024: emotionally deficient people are encouraged to behave badly and promoted for it. It’s the exact opposite of how it should be. An emotionally healthy person would see another person flip them off, and smile and wave in response. Done.
