All the female characters in this show are shown to be competent people. There's no real "Damsel in Distress". Like, Suki is a powerful warrior, Katara is a master water bender, Yue sacrificed herself for the sake of the world. (And the other one :P)

I personally loved Zhao as a villain. I did love his arrogant manner and his neediness for glory and appreciation. Sometimes you need villains like these and it worked perfectly for ATLA!

Zuko was stronger than Zhao and Zuko was never even close to being a match for Aang. The difference with Azula is how unpredictable her duels with Aang were, you never knew who was going to win. In fact, I'd say Azula was better than Aang for those first few fights, and Aang only pulled level with her once he learned Earth bending.

Azula's monologue about the tides is still one of the best character introductions I've ever seen. It's so awesome and so frightening.

Long hair is a fire nation custom, mostly among royalty. it represents status and can be seen as dishonourable if it gets cut. People would more easily identify them as fire nation citizens for having long hair. In the Kyoshi book a fire soldier had her cut and was ashamed to show her lover the cut side, where she would face one way or slightly look at the floor to avoid the love interest from seeing.

It's based off the Japanese topknot (the Chonmage) during the time of Samurai, more specifically during the Edo period(1603-1867). It's basically the embodiment of the Samurai's honor and cutting it is a huge ordeal. To the Samurai, having your top knot cut off by someone else is worse than dying in battle. Having to cut it off yourself is just as bad. It's hard to see the significance of that scene but if you've ever read a book like Musashi, or really any Samurai book then it's clear how powerful that scene is.

Azula as a villain is crazy but just her introduction scene is such a perfect, blunt, and to the point example of how she is as a person. absolutely 100% psychopathic killer. lol

Since nobody said yet: Cave of Two Lovers is the first time we see Aang earthbending. He digs a nice grave for himself after talking about kissing her in the grave. Also, Uncle Iroh is disgrunted about the name "Mushi" probably because it means "insect" in Japanese.

Keep in mind those other avatars you saw each had decades to master the elements. Aang only has a few months. But considering he had mastered airbending by the ripe age of 12, he's considered to be a prodigy even for an avatar.

Azula is one of my favorite additions to this show. No nonsense. Full mindgames. Manipulation constantly. Lightning. You're likely to lose the physical and mental battle if you end up going against her. Then again, like a certain man said to Zuko. Azula was born lucky. He was lucky to be born.

There is no war in Ba Sing Se.

It was so important for Zuko to see that family and relate to them. He has a lot of deep-seeded traumas but these humbling experiences are what he needs.

Azula makes Zhao look like a goofy goober. Although I guess he already did that on his own lowkey

This season is so good. Zuko's story always hits hard. Azula is a great villain. And I've named a cat of mine after almost every main character from this season lol

"You can't run forever!" "You can't fight forever!" That's such a good exchange. These lines in this show go so hard.

Zuko's character development and story is one of the best written in all forms of media. Enjoy the ride and all the emotions that come with it :)

I think Iroh believes that balance is the way that will lead the Fire Nation to prosperity. This is in stark contrast to The Fire Lord Ozai who seems to believe that prosperity is gained through sheer domination (power & control). So while they all want to see the Fire Nation prosper, the two brothers have very different ideas of what prosperity is and how it is achieved. Iroh, in his infinite and far reaching wisdom, can see that the current path the Fire Nation is on is one of short sightedness and self destruction. He sees that their cruelty and desire for dominion over all will consume them too in the end. He knows fire dies when it has consumed all that fuels it.

I think he loves Zuko and hopes to help foster in him the potential he sees that may help the prince become "Lord", and to lead the Fire Nation into a healthier era of balance and prosperity... but there's a lot of rage and bitterness in him that he must help Zuko overcome. His calming presence is an influence in and of itself.

Iroh preaches about balance in the world. He took a harsh stance against Zhao doing away with the Moon Spirit, which would've led to the downfall of the last Water Tribe stronghold, and became fugitives of the Fire Nation because of it. It makes me feel a way to hear then that he'd be down for a Fire Nation victory in the war. Iroh has been around the block. He doesn't feel right about them stealing the ostrich horse but it is a necessity in their situation. And as far as taking Zuko's outbursts, it's like a little kid throwing a tantrum. We'll get a deeper look into their bond down the road, but Iroh believes to know what Zuko is going thru and as mentioned, he wants to be there as a guide.

This, the Beach, Nightmare and Daydreams, and the Ember Island Players are some of the funniest episodes of any show I've ever seen. They are masterpieces of comedy.

No idea if this is canon, but I get the sense that in the Fire Nation (or at least among firebenders and high-ranking military) having visible scars is seen as indicative of failure, especially burn scars. If a firebender gets seriously burned, well, they can't be that great of a firebender, now can they? Either they were incapable of controlling their own fire, or they lost a duel with one of their own. I feel like Zuko's had it trained in his mind that his scar is something to be deeply ashamed of, especially because of his banishment. When the Earth Kingdom girl approached him with compassion about it, even showing her own scars, I don't think he had ever experienced that before. Her words were "the Fire Nation has hurt you", as though his scar was not about who he is and his own personal failures, but rather what others have done *to him.* I think it's a very pivotal moment for him to have this sort of realization, at least in the long chain of events that lead to the end of his character arc. It's realistic that it's not an immediate 180 of his mindset, because he's only ever known the perspective of the Fire Nation elite as opposed to victims of war. It's a subtle moment, but still one of my favorites.

As somebody who grew up with this show as it aired on tv, it is AMAZING to see you guys who are 10 years younger than me, to just completely love and appreciate this story is great. I grew up watching it by myself. None of my friends cared for it, so I LOVE to see people watch it for the first time. I love that you guys are so into it. It makes me feel like I’m watching it for the first time again too.

I would never say the characters are one-dimensional in season 1 but they do deepen a lot more in season 2 and 3 into their character arcs, to the point of making them some of the best ones in media.

Fun fact, general fong in this episode is voiced by Daniel Dae Kim, who is playing Fire Lord Ozai in the Netflix Live Action!! He also voiced Hiroshi Sato in Korra. He'll do very well I think, plays a great baddie!

Everyone loves season 1, yet it's widely considered the weakest of the three. That's not saying season 1 is bad at all, it just shows how fantastic seasons 2 and 3 are. Season 2 is where things start to get really interesting

I know I'm late, but I wanted to contribute a bit of context around cutting off the ponytail/bun. All of the nations in avatar are a mixture of influences, but the Fire nation is heavily influenced by imperial Japan. Back in the day, samurai would wear a hairstyle called a chonmage, essentially a fancy top knot, that was a bit of a status symbol. If I had to guess, I would say that the simplest explanation is the correct one; cutting off the hair symbolizes a shift in status and allegiance away from the royal family.

After you guys finish ATLA, you should make a series watching overanalyzing avatar cuz it points out some details but is funny.

The hair cutting has meaning in both the real world context and in the world of avatar. In the real world, top knots were a common hairstyle in feudal japan. Cutting one signified that you renounce your status and achievement, often done out of shame for a failure. In this case, it represents Zuko and Iroh renouncing the fire nation itself, as top-knots are the expected hairstyle among fire nation nobility. The fire nation is also the in-universe depiction of imperial Japan, so it makes sense.

I personally love this reaction just to see someone who doesn't immediately love Zuko.

I’m looking forward to the coming episodes. The storyline builds and builds. The most epic show ever.

The pony tails are signs of fire nation royalty but so cutting was cutting ties but they weren't so nice to them hunting iroh and Zuko was burned by his dad and banished as people watched. If you look back Zhoa was laughing at him and Azula was the girl smiling as zuko screams. I understand if you don't like Zuko yet but imo zhoa was worse he's just bad for the sake of having a bad guy Zuko at least has his reasons even if he's on the wrong side or the wrong motives.

The ponytail/top knot symbolizes honor/social status in Japanese Bushido/Samurai Culture which the fire nation is partially based on. To have your top knot cut off unwillingly is a gross insult/assault. It also symbolizes and has been associated with things like Identity, Vitality, Wealth, and emotional attachment across all cultures in ancient times. It can mean all these things when Zuko cuts off his top knot. Him cutting it off symbolizes he feels he has none of these things. Abandoned by his mother, unwanted by his father, lied to by his sister, loathed by his nation he cuts off his hair like he cuts out the attachments to the life he used to know. Who is he if not the prince of the fire nation and heir to the throne, he seeks a new beginning.

@@darriongeorge5137 Without the comet, avatar state Aang destroys Ozai, the avatar state is still as powerful anyway, the problem is that its the wrong way to end the war. Iroh said it himself that the war ending with senseless violence is wrong.

@@gunchar06 spoilers for ATLA and Rise of Kyoshi the only reason she was able to do that is because she caught him off guard, same thing happened to Kyoshi, she almost died cause she was caught off guard by lightning in her first book Aang is able to dodge Ozai's lightning pretty easily during the finale and that's not even with the AS so I doubt Azula could hit him when he's fully paying attention, especially since Ozai's lightning generation is way faster.

@@skull1161 Bruh..., Spoiler Yeah, and fighting a whole army makes it obviously much more likely to get caught off guard in the first place, cause even in the AS Aang is still just 1 body with 1 field of vision that is controlled by many. And that Ozai could generate lightning around twice as fast as Azula before the comics would make that even more dangerous for Aang, as Aang avoided Ozai's lightning(which was everything but easy) it was in a 1on1 in the perfect fighting area for the Avatar after all, while trying to fight a whole army + a lightningbender in a less perfect area would be pretty much just suicide.

Azula is worse than Zhao and Zuko combined. Sometimes she makes me want to hide behind the couch! If I had to compile a list of TV's top 5 female villains, she would be on it regardless of animation.
