A quote from one of the books set in the Avatar Universe. Not a spoiler just extra lore to show the importance of the last scene in episode 1. "In the Fire Nation. Hair was heavily linked with honor. She'd heard that sometimes the losers of an important Agni Kai would shave part of their head bald, laying patches of their scalp bare to symbolize an extra level of humility from their defeat, but the topknot was always sacred. It was never touched except in circumstances akin to death."

58:55 The bending is a gift you're born with. Most of the people are normal people (non-benders), but for those who are born as benders, only that element can be bent and mastered. That is why the Avatar is special, the Avatar is born as the only four elements bender, He just needs to train to master them.
Many take Pakku's approach to Sokka as dismissive, but I think that Pakku patting Sokka's shoulder, then saying "Take care, Son." is actually huge. My impression is that he's softened because of knowing these two kids are the grandchildren of the love of his life. So, Sokka is, in a way, in Pakku's heart, a son. Hope I said that clearly enough. There are female airbenders, you will meet an airbending avatar who was female later in book 3. The temples were normally separated by gender, with the Northern and Southern temples housing male nomads, and the Eastern and Western housing female nomads. Back in episode twelve, the monks mentioned they planned to send Aang to the Eastern temple to separate him from Gyasto, so he would have been taught by the female monks had he not run away.

Azula is a very rare character type: a perfect villain. She credibly portrays an amazing, powerful, ambitious, intelligent and dangerous young woman with almost no sympathetic qualities, and yet she's magnetic. Nothing about her is unearned. @@MrGBH Well, that's often a failing of the supposed "elite" be they royalty, celebrities, and politicians. The fear of royalty hurts the Fire Nation numerous times in the series as it results in soldiers being manipulated even when the orders make no sense.
being afraid of Azula is a good first reaction. After you know her; she's complicated. TERRIFYING; but very complicated.
I like how it was foreshadowed that Omashu was taken over with the gang being attacked by fireballs before choosing the tunnel.
an interesting juxtaposition is the fact that what initially got Zuko in trouble, was standing up for fire nation soldiers and speaking out against them being used as fodder, we see this flashback in the storm after Zuko says that the safety of the crew doesn't matter. The first scene we see of Azula though is her disregarding the people under her and what they have to say and even threatening to kill one of them. Azula is the perfect child in their father's eyes, when Zuko says the safety of the crew doesn't matter, he is emulating Azula and what his father expects of both of them. In the end though even after all he's been through he eventually acquiesces and prioritizes the crew during the storm. He's TRYING to be like azula, to be the child his father wants, but deep down he's still that kid who spoke up in the fire lord's war room to defend the soldiers who serve him and his family.
24:00 Idk if this has been said already, but thats not lightning. Its easy to miss on the first watch, especially since we are introduced to her lightning bending capabilities before her firebending. Her fire is actually blue as a representation of her extreme fire bending prowess at such a young age, as blue flames are naturally hotter than red flames. I also appreciate that you mentioned Zuko being clouded by anger, but her using virtually no firebending against Zuko with his daggers also speaks volumes to her confidence and skills as a martial artist.
It's stated in Season 1 that, yes, only the Avatar can master more than one element. For everyone else, bending is limited to one element at most, and it's basically genetic. If you are born to Fire Nation parents, you _might_ be a fire bender, but you will nevber be an earth bender. Training only makes you better at bending, but you have to be born with the ability. It's almost like it's a recessive trait, though that is not expressly confirmed. And there were no "Air Nuns" at Aang's Southern Air Temple, as their religion separated the sexes into different temples after taking children from their parents.
Fun fact- The scene to introduce Azula, her famous “Do the tides command this ship?” speech, was not originally supposed to be in the show. They only wrote it as an audition piece to find Azula’s voice actress. But Grey DeLisle delivered it so masterfully that they decided to rewrite that episode and add it as Azula’s introduction. Years after first watching the series, and after 12+ rewatches, Azula is still one of my all-time favorite characters.
It's amazing how they build up the history of Omashu and make us, the viewers, appreciate it's origin, to then show what's become of it and hit us right in the heart
There actually is a female airbender in this very reaction! When Roku gives Aang his vision of the avatar state, you see one of the previous avatars was a female airbender. You can tell pretty easily, because they don't shave their entire heads, only the front so the arrow is visible :)

The fire nation is strongly inspired by japanese culture. upper class (samurai) would have specific hairstyles and cutting their hair (or worse, having it cut as a punishment) was highly symbolic and signifies distance from the previous elevated status. I assume that Zuko's ponytail was also signifier of his status of banished prince.
When this show first came out, there were people who believed that Katara would end up with Aang (Kataang shippers) and there were people who believed that Katara would end up with Zuko (Zutara shippers). I had friends in both camps. High/Middle school friendships were ended over this discussion.
So happy you finally get to meet Azula!!!! She is one nasty cookie and one of my all time favorite tv villains!!!
Kiyoshi island, named after Avatar Kiyoshi, who was the Earthbending Avatar prior to Avatar Roku. Princess Azula, named after her paternal grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon. Azula's firebending is uniquely blue. She is not using lightning every time.
My favourite fact about episode 2 is that the lead nomad (Chong) is voiced by the same person who voices all the animals in atla. Such talent!
I’ve seen this series a bunch of times including other reactors.. you’re unique in making me tear up w your empathy 😂
In feudal Japan, the willing removal of the topknot by samurai was a display of stepping down from their position (samurai were most similarly akin to nobility in feudal England, so basically a duke or lord willingly giving up their title). Since the Fire Nation is based on Feudal Japan, when Iroh and Zuko remove theirs it probably has a similar meaning.
@Circiely
7 ай бұрын
This a little late of a response, but you're right, it is similar, but MUCH more severe in ATLA. The cutting of hair had similar meanings to signify disgrace or dishonor, but topknots were absolutely sacred to the Fire Nation. They could shave their heads or parts of their scalps to show they, for instance, lost an Agni Kai but topknots were always, always left alone. The Fire Nation correlates the cutting of top knots to death. I guess you could say that Zuko and Iroh weren't just renouncing their titles of princes of the Fire Nation, but their lives as well.
it's not mentioned in the show but in the prequel novels it's explained that shaving all of your hair except the top knot is a symbol of shame and regret usually after an agni kai, cutting the top knot itself is like a death of your honor and is even worse
Love that you’re continuing the show. I will say that this season will surprise you a little more than the first and there’s definitely going to be an episode or two full of waterworks. Have tissues on standby.
In Air Nomad Culture, male Airbenders are raised trained at the Southern and Northern Air Temples whereas female Airbenders are raised and trained at the Eastern and Western Air Temples. Avatar Yangchen, the Airbending Avatar before Aang, was born at the Western Air Temple.
The cutting of their hair is a symbol for cutting their ties with the fire nation and the royal family. I’m not exactly sure on the details, but cutting the hair seems to be incredibly symbolic in eastern culture for when someone is about to change or have significant character growth
@cctomcat321
10 ай бұрын
It's more of a sign of shame. They're both removing their top knots as they are now officially traitors and need to go into hiding. So it serves a few purposes. It's also to show their decline in social status. They are no longer royalty, officially.
These videos are making me fall in love with the show again!!
🎶SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL!🎶
Just a sort of side note. The voice actor for Azula is the same one as for Delilah Briarwood from TLoVM. So you know, she does the sociopathic villain thing pretty well.
Hey, Funny, massive shoutout to your grandma, may be resting in peace. My condolences for your loss. Great video by the way. You are as aesom as your content!
If I recall correctly, episode 2x1 is possibly the only time in the series where Iroh calls Ozai by his first name when talking about him. He typically calls him "my brother".
I have a theory about General Fung. In the Season 1 finale, Koh the Facestealer reveals multiple faces in the course of his conversation with Aang. The last face he shows us happens to bear a striking resemblance to General Fung. I wonder if Fung actually had his spiritual face stolen and it altered his personality so drastically that he became self-destructive...
I thinks its so important for zuko to see that the war affects the civilians just the same as any soldier. No proper soldier would burn the innocent, and yet there is the proof.
Needed this today, love your take on the series. Zuko's journey is just getting started. As someone that grew up in a high control group when you are able to get out of that your whole world view is shook, it can be difficult. This show really does a good job navigating it from different perspectives.

the secret tunnel episode was the first episode I ever saw of Avatar. I was channel surfing while on vacation, and I had never heard of it before and Aang just had his flower crown and they were all braiding each others hair and singing the secret tunnel song. It was so weird and confusing, it felt like a fever dream and I was immediately obsessed. I finished the whole episode and started the series when I got back home
so many great things about these eps... the badger mole song lives in my head rent free, "I'm saying i'd rather kiss you than die, it's a compliment." one of the funniest lines ever, and of course "Secret tunnel~~~~then you dieeee...." 😂😂 I always wanted Song to come back, I kinda loved her and zuko together to be honest but I'm probably in the minority on that. She just seemed genuinely kind.
SECRET TUNNEL! Also, Sokka's forehead at the end always kills me
Season 2, Let's GOOOOO! Most of my favorites episodes are in this season (season 3 is excellent, I just have a soft spot for this season). You're one of my favorite atla reactors, because of the way you engage so deeply with the material. I can't wait to see this season through your eyes!
You're either going to hate Azula as a character or love her as a villainess (personally, I am for the latter option)... as you will soon see, she really puts the BAD in badass 😏
Love your reactions. Cant wait to get more!
Grey Griffin absolutely nails the voice of Azula
THIS is when the show gets good! LET'S GOOOO!
24:00 "The lightning is insane!" - Just be aware... that wasn't lightning just now; that was blue flame.... She can only do lightning with a charge up and the hand motion... She can't instantaneously produce lightning... You'll hear the crackling sound when she does it...
And now you finally get the "SECRET TUNNEEEEEEEEEEL" meme/reference we all do lol. Welcome to the nerdy avatar club :D

...and *die*!
Wow, First ~first time~ watcher to recall Iroh channelled lightning in season one. Most people tend to forget that.. cool!
44:27: My reaction the first time I saw that as well. That whole scene is just so cute and funny yet realistic at the same time. It's one of my favorite parts of Avatar, actually.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot... on an earlier video, I commented that there would be a very familiar voice in season 2: Azula is voiced by none other than Grey DeLisle aka the voice of Daphne Blake from Scooby-Doo aka Asajj Ventress from 2003-05 Clone Wars series (since you're apparently a huge Star Wars fan)
the best piece of dialogue in the entire series, "If the earth kingdom discovers us, they'll have us killed." "If the firenation discovers us, we'll be turned over to Azula." "Earth Kingdom it is."
My list: -You can rolling your eyes very skilful. I would like to say this. ^^ -Oh yes, Azula is very dangerous, in battle and manipulation. We will see it veeeery often. -I think Katara lose here so quick, is because she have no experience to fight against earth benders and wouldn`t really fight against these people. -The love tunnel is not an easy episode for Sokka. Poor Sokka.
for the past decade and a half, i always sing secret tunnel whenever i go through one
“Oh, Aang. You’re…new” 44:33 I don’t know why this alone had me cackling. Thank you. 😂
Azula is one of my favorite characters, if not my favorite character. She’s tied with one other. Grey Griffin (formerly Delisle) is just so deliciously cunning in this role. Easy to forget Azula is 14, two years younger than Zuko. I feel bad for Zuko. So desperate for his father’s love and approval that he believed Azula of all people.
46:18 😂 Rodents of unusual size, great reference
Fun fact: Azula’s voice actor played Lady Delilah Briarwood in Legend of Vox Machina!
SECRET TUNNEEEELLLLLLL SECRET TUNNEEEELLLLLLL
Here we go! This is where the good stuff begins.
I love this season its my fav
Can't wait for this season. You asked a question about "g*psies" toward the end, and you're right, it's considered offensive. The actual word for those people in the real world is Romani. "Hippies" fits the characters well
Take a break, savor the flavor? Not a bad idea... but season 2 glorious goodness awaits!! This is where they show really hits its stride, so fill that glass and prepare for some amazing character and story development!
