    I have a 2002 YZ250 2 stroke that I used for riding desert. Bottom line is it really is just better at mx, rather than spending a bunch of money on it, just get the WR250F. I have the 15 WR the 250f and it is better at everything off road except for the extra weight. Here's what I did to the 2 stroke... Bought used WR front forks and rear shock. 13 ounce Fly Wheel Weight...Get the 11 ounce the 13 interferes with the clutch actuator and wears the cable too fast. Acerbis 3 gallon tank. Pro Moto billet kickstand, this thing is a work of art. Hand guards. Skid plate. KTM thermostat. Homemade coolant catch tank. Problems you can't fix.. The transmission is a weak link, 1st too tall 5th too short. Power hits too abrupt. Weak low rpm torque. Engine vibration. Strong points.... Light weight. Easy kick starting. Fun to ride.

    Thanks NVMCRIDER. For my YZ, I’m looking to address the the problem areas with gears out of the WR, flex bars to help with the vibrations and engine work to shift the power band down to the low mid. Some tweaking of the timing might help with the hit I hope. BUT! You’re right that it’s generally best to just buy a bike made to do what you’re trying to do with it. Thanks for the feedback; I’ll look at an 11oz instead of the 13oz. Thanks a bunch for that advice. The pros of this bike, the number one being “fun” may outweigh some of the cons I hope! Also agree completely on the PMB kickstand. I’ve used “work of art” describing it as well.

    One thing I would add from my experience installing a flywheel weight on my cr250. Is to get the biggest weight available for your bike. I went with a 10oz instead of the heaviest option and it made a big difference but the heavier weight would have been better to keep it from stalling out on slow hill climbs. So just get the heaviest weight available. Secondly, some advice on an 18" rear wheel on a budget, Tusk sells the 18" rim for just $90 and the rim with spokes for $130. The cheapest one around besides finding a used one.

  • @PlushEnduro

    Probably good advice on the FWW. I was thinking I'd go with the 13oz (I think that's the biggest one for the YZ). I haven't heard anyone say that they wished they got a slightly smaller one, so maybe bigger is better. The tusk option for wheels is a good one. If you can lace your own hubs and true a wheel (without punching a hole through the wall out of frustration) I'd say that's great route. They have a fully built with bearings and all for a reasonable amount of money as well- granted it's over double the $130... I may actually go the fully built route, because after powder coating the hubs (I know that isn't necessary in real life) it might break closer to even. Still on the fence, because I kinda want the experience of lacing up a new rear as I've never done it.

    I have a 2002 yz250 2t. I did these mods for a easier clutch and highly recommend what he did. The yzx clutch spring go in easy, the proline clutch lever and the springs made a giant difference. Put a new cable on it too and lube it up! I highly recommend the throttle tamer throttle tube as well. I put a 13oz flywheel weight on too. I love all these mods. With those 4 mods the bike is so much better. Night and day!! This Mountain Life is great BTW!!!

    Apart from the suspension for me the transmission does a big difference, there are kits, or if you got very good mechanical skills you can do a WR transmission thats what i got on mine, but another thing is there is a big support of aftermarket parts to help with the conversion to a woods bike and that is a good thing

    Great tips but one thing I’ll add which made probably the biggest improvement for any of my 2 strokes was to jet the carb a little lean especially the pilot. 2 strokes are notoriously jetted super rich from the factory and for MX that’s ok, but going leaner (especially the pilot jet) allows you to lug and have a crispy bottom end power.

  • @EarthSurferUSA

    @EarthSurferUSA

    4 ай бұрын

    They are jetted rich so they don't go lean for any air quality around the world. MX or not, if you don't jet a 250, you are probably losing power in the entire curve and 2-3 HP at peak.

    A heavier flywheel does absorb power. MXA wrote an article on them recently, and they are wrong, flat wrong. Paraphrasing: "The added flywheel weight does not decrease HP, and can even add HP." Reality is: 1) When you are accelerating, the extra weight takes more energy to accelerate, which is why the RPM's rev slower for more slippery traction. (HP is work done over time) 2) At a steady throttle opening the HP to the wheel is the same. 3) When you let off the gas, the stored energy in the flywheel does go back into the crank, like for braking, where it is not used. 4) MXA is a little "slow" today. No where near the technical mag it was in the 70's, 80's and 90's.

    Love the build....since you want some porting done, i would love to see you send the cylinder off to eric gorr for his low to mid porting and have him do the 295cc big bore....I think that would be great....icing on the cake would be a heavy flywheel weight and a lectron carb....I'm gonna follow this build close...lol

    🤜 thanks man! So... I am currently having porting done and honestly I WAS going to go with Eric at first. That was until I talked to him on the phone... or at least tried to. He seemed so disinterested in speaking to me that I had to pass on him. I did some more research and ended up sending the jug and head off to Ken O’Connor, up in Connecticut, who is a joy to work with. I considered a big bore, but to be honest I really wanted a squirrelly 250 as opposed to another 300. Thanks for the feedback and ideas though Josh! Keepem coming. Haha.

    I have an 02 yz250 as well. Cylinder was sent to millennium for 265cc, bottom end porting, and head cut for pump gas. Has 66hrs on it now. 15oz FWW( found used on ebay). Gnarly pipe. Boyseen dual stage reeds. NJEC needle. Absolute tractor. 18"tusk rear. I am about to revalve the suspension. I have been doing a lot of research to learn how altering the shims affects damping. I am curious if you would share what shim stack you end up with when you get your forks and shock back. It would give the DIYers like me a good baseline to start from. I am basicly same size and skill level as you. Thanks in advance. Keep up the awesome vids.
