Conscious Walking to Inhibit Left AIC and Right BC "Patterned" Tension

Inhibition of the Left AIC and Right BC pattern does not require any special techniques. All it takes is getting an individual's brain to process sensory input differently. In other words, change the pattern of sensory processing from the dominant right side to the non-dominant left side.
To be honest, this took me many years to understand. I had many a-ha moments along the way that allowed me to see human movement in this way. I started with a biomechanical model where I thought it was all about hamstrings and glutes and adductors (and it is to some degree) but then realized those muscles are only as good as the sensory input the brain is using to activate those muscles. If the neuro-sensory input is "faulty" or too one-sided, it leads to overuse of the dominant pattern for all movement and respiration: that dominant pattern is the Left AIC and Right BC patterns.
To get the opposite pattern to work, the Right AIC and Left BC pattern (which is really "left stance" phase of walking) you need to inhibit, or turn off, the dominant pattern.
That's what I show in this video. Inhibition of her dominant left AIC right BC pattern through changing how her brain is processing sensory input.

    I don’t know where to begin, but this video just changed my entire life. For the over 30 years i have been in wrong pattern and stuck in it every day. To make matters worse i was a collage basketball player and ran the same way. Time after time i couldn’t figure out what was wrong and why my back was hurting all the time ,when walking, running or sitting for a long time. I didn’t realize that such simple movements can alter your life and completely effect you posture. I watched so many videos and after watching this one it FINALLY clicked!     Thanks. Just to be clear, my friend now has the ability to get "neutral" just through manipulating the way she walks, but it doesn't me she is "stable" in a new left-sided pattern. She'd need a real PRI program for that.

    This is both fascinating and puzzling at the same time. I just can't believe what I'm seeing. Although it looks simple, I really have to make a conscious effort to change this pattern. I have been walking the wrong way for over 52 years and this has lead to a big issue without me realizing this.

    the more videos i watch the more it connects to my life. i've always stared at the ground to find my footing, heel pain in my foot and the knees locking up... it's opened up a whole new world to re-stabilize myself.

    Watched the video; watched it again and did the leg raise on right side, then did intentional walking and redid the leg raise. It was amazing. It went up further by like a foot.

    Just wanted to say thanks, Neil. Would never have made sense of what was wrong with me without your videos. None of the techniques fully worked for me, it was always about 50% improvement. Turns out I had a super restricted left posterior capsule. After aggressively inhibiting and then trying the techniques again, I finally feel like I'm not 60 years old anymore. Thanks a lot, it's super appreciated.

    Restricted left posterior capsule is quite common due to how the left leg moves into external rotation to keep us walking straight. Happy you are feeling better.

    I think you are correct, but remember that inhibition doesn't equal stability. They still need to "strengthen" certain parts of their body through a PRI program.

    It certainly could be. My friend's right adductor "let go" through changing her sensory input, that's why her right leg was able to abduct fully in the 2nd testing situation.

    Hey Neil...have you had any patients that are opposite? For example... instead of head going left and eyes right...for whatever reason the head goes right and eyes go left?

    When I do this it definitely changes the way I walk, everything feels different. My arms start swinging so that seems positive, but my hips feel like they're swaying side to side a ridiculous amount, and I feel like I'm being propelled forward by something behind me. Like I tested it by stopping suddenly with feet next to each other and very nearly fell forward because of the momentum. I wish I knew what proper walking without compensation is supposed to feel like as I have no idea if the sway and feeling of propulsion are normal or not. I think not as it feels so so weird.

    Thank you Neal, to be honest I have been doing 4 basic PRI exercises for a long time, but for a first time I have seen amazing results after conscious walking or slow walking with 3-5sec pause on each leg.I'm wondering, can consiocus walking replace 90-90 and side lying glute ?

    Conscious walking can be an addition to a normal PRI program, but it won't help stabilize you.

    Hi neal, What type of cardio do you prefer for a patterned person, is cycling better than running?. And what are your thoughts on ASICS nimbus 23 shoes which is recommended by pri, am I going to be a lot more stable in that shoe?

    Walk barefoot more when you can. Shoes are not natural and make you lose connection to the ground.

    It's possible that the heel lift could lead to left hip flexor/quad over-activity.

    Wow it really works. Thanks a lot for this. It feels really good when there is nothing that keeps poking constantly inside your butt. But I am having pain in left leg because of weak muscle as I keep walking on left leg. Again thanks for all the information you are providing. Because I thought I have scoliosis because left side of clothes used to twist and rotate in right side in front. But then I came across your website where I got to know that it's all happening because of my pelvis. Right now I am trying to correct it with exercises you told. Thanks again for everything.

    It's actually left sidebending of the neck at C4-C6ish area and left rotation of the head.

    What is your advise for someone suffering from a chronic lateral shift? It’s been worsening for the past 8 months after not treating a herniated disc for many years. I’m afraid that doing the McKenzie glides will degenerate the already damaged column but want to take my life back. Please advise

    @@NealHallinan no I get that but I'm saying how do we apply this to the mechanics of the sport? While sprinting do we focus on left heel strike with the world passing us by on the left side? Perhaps cover the right eye? When swinging do we focus on left heel strike as a right handed batter?

    Okay, so we do these exercises.. And once we are back into the correct pattern, how we workout and strengthen our bodies without going back into this pattern? What if we genuinely have weak muscles from being sedentary for years and years of just sitting?

    Working out/strength training are different than what Postural Restoration is addressing. PRI is "walking and breathing without compensation", nothing more. That's the foundation of human movement. We do have to develop a type of strength in PRI, but it's much more "brain" than it is muscle. Traditional training is much more muscle oriented. So you really can't compare the two. But you can train and remain "neutral" or return to "neutral" after training. No one stays "neutral" 24/7.

    @@NealHallinan right, but at what point does the body overcome its old pattern to the point it's functional? Let's use this video for example, so the lady gets out of the Left AIC, Right BC pattern by ending up on the left heel, but if she was to ever go dancing and end up on her right heel vs her left she would be stuck back in the pattern, you can't look down when you walk? These things are part of everyday living.. Touching on your other point, I understand that PRI is neurological programing vs straight msuclar force but at what point can someone confidently get back to training without falling right back into the old pattern? You do it in one of your dancing videos yourself.. So for the rest of our lives multiple times a day we have to reset ourselves?

    @@tylermccaig With proper training, she would likely lie down neutral the majority of the time, but no human will ever be "neutral" 24/7. We want the ability to "move in and out of the pattern", which is what I'm showing in the video. She hasn't had any PRI training, so she can't transition between left and right sided patterns so easily. But for her none of this is really that important because she's not in pain. Everyone's life is different. She's not affected by her patterns, other people might be in intense pain. It's all relative.

    No. It would probably make it worse. You need to sense your left heel and left peripheral space (optic flow) more.

    Its the exact same - everyone is left-dominant. It dosent matter if ur left handed and left-footed. Its about Your diaphragm. Its always bigger on your right side naturally i believe partially beacuse of Your heart taking up a lot of space on the left side (which makes it so that the left diaphragm is smaller than the right diaphragm) Your body always prefer leaning to the side where Your diaphragm is the biggest! This is knowledge from Neal himself - so its 100% trustworthy. The takeaway is that its not reversed for a left handed person :-)

    Correct. It doesn't change according to handedness. It's all about the inherent asymmetry of the human brain, our visual asymmetry/preference for right peripheral space, and our organ arrangement on the inside: the big liver helping the right diaphragm stay positioned for breathing more easily than the left.
